Crazy idea I know, but you could ask the person working there

You generally pick it from a stand inside the post office, usually in a pack of 10 or so. You then put inside whatever you want to post, address the envelope and hand it to the cashier.

You forgot the bit that will stop the OP getting accused of shoplifting - namely that they need to PAY for the envelopes before they can use them! Sometimes this is can be a different queue and till than the one for the post office services alone.

I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers.

What are you sending ?

A trombone

You'll need to get a box/packaging yourself before you post it.

A rusty one?

In my Post Office you buy the envelope first from the shop counter, then you fill it and address it and take it to the Post Office counter.
Look for signs, or ask staff for help if you're unsure.
It's much cheaper to use your own envelope. You can buy padded ones from The Works.

Is this really…… you know what. A shop.
en70uk@reddit
Depends on what you are sending
But at my local PO they have envelopes behind the counter that you can buy
Neddlings55@reddit
Depends on the PO, but many run separate shops that sell cards/stationary/tat etc.
You go in, you buy a pack of envelopes, you put your stuff into one and address it accordingly, then you get back in the queue and pay to post it.
Other places also sell envelopes like corner shops, newsagents, supermarkets etc.

Buy what you need off it Amazon or wherever
Willeth@reddit
You don't do it in a single transacrion. You buy the envelope first from the shop part, then put your stuff in it and address it, then send it from the post office part.
Specialist_Catch_800@reddit
You normally have envelopes yourself that you've purchased from elsewhere, or they do sell them generally on an individual basis but normally more expensive per envelope than if you're buying a pack.
