Let me just say that I grew up in a house where we never had name brand anything. Just the big ass bulk bag of raisin bran, or whatever mom got from Grocery Outlet.
But in my first days of post HS freedom, with the (relative) millions of weekly dollars I got from my Hollywood Video paycheck, I definitely had a penchant for J. Pops, W. Honeycomb, and F. Lucky Charms.
Later when my waistline began to expand, I foolishly chose P. Mini Wheats and X. Special K and (no letter) Grape Nuts, not understanding it was all the same sugars in the cereal.
I also grew up without most of the cereals on your chart, except Cheerios and raisin bran.
If I only got to choose three of the ones shown here, to eat for the rest of my life, I guess it would be the Cheerios raisin bran and honey bunches of oats.
honestly my favourite cereal is just plain cheerios, always has been even as a kid. but out of these, frosted flakes, corn chex (since it didn't specify), and frosted mini wheats.
My mom would give us those giant shredded wheat bars and we would drizzle honey on them. I miss the shredded wheat crumbs on the bottom of the bowl soaked in milk.
I'm really enjoying the amount of love being given to Grape Nuts in these comments. My SO and friends have always made fun of my love for "old man cereals"
I am definitely American, I hadn't considered this angle, and now that I am... of course we are winning the worldwide diabeetus prevalence competition.
Don’t want to preach, that wasn’t my intention at all, but yeah. It’s criminal imho that this was never nipped in the butt and has instead been allowed to become ‘normal’.
Not taken in a preachy way at all, and thank you. I ate this stuff as an adult in college, and (with the benefit of hindsight) am disappointed that it was so easily available. This stuff clearly isn't nutrition.
Sadly, no. But I looked it up and there is something disconcerting about what are essentially square cheerios. How do they compare taste-wise?
Golden Grahams post 2000s all taste much worse than the 90s version.
Kid me would like D. H. I.
But my all time favorite isn't there - peanut butter Capt'n Crunch. Regular Capt'n Crunch sucks. And isn't the pic berry Capt'n Crunch? Also yuck.
Not to lean into the 'British food looks like something you'd feed to a political prisoner or Victorian workhouse orphans' stereotype, but I grew up with Ready Brek porridge.
Not helping matters, the adverts were essentially 'life here is cold, wet, windy, and your child might die on their walk to school, so feed them this gruel to give them a fighting chance'.
The radioactive glow effect was certainly an interesting creative choice, given we were in the midst of the Cold War, when the government was mailing out instruction leaflets on what to do with grandma's charred remains in a nuclear winter, lol.
Fun story: a theatre group in my city often puts on classic Saturday Morning Cartoon and Cereal marathons and serve bottomless ultra sugary kid-favourites to eat while we watch with other Xennials and Gen X friends.
I'd eat two servings in their little wee bowls and feel sick the rest of the morning but I stay bec CARTOONS
It was a tough one for kid me but my choices stand. My gramma always had sugary brand name cereals for my sibs and I when we slept over and these are the ones that stood out. Two close runners up are CTC and HN Cheerios
I’ve tasted every cereal there except A, B, M, P, Q, R, U, and V. That means I’ve tasted 18 of the 25 cereals.
X: Special K Red Berries
E: Fruit Loops
F: Frosted Flakes
Once in a while, Cookie Crisp. I don’t eat it with milk. I grab some and eat them from my hand. Another one I like is Kashi Honey Almond Flax Crunch. I need the fiber and protein. They’re all mostly sugar bombs. I usually grab oatmeal with less sugar or no sugar on it and slice a banana and sprinkle raspberries on it. Once in a while, regular Cheerios. Very plain but 1 or 2 g of sugar. Not 11-13 g like most of them.
Special K Red Berries is the only one I eat nowadays with Horizon Organic milk as I’m lactose intolerant. Lactaid milk sucks. Still gives me gas. Horizon Organic is so much better.
I begged my parents for cookie crisps and they were like “you can’t have cookies for breakfast.” Buffoons. But they were right, it is rather sickening.
Are we judging by which ones have the most textural staying power or the ones that have the best after milks? That is going to sway my opinion by quite a lot
Dairy Queen has breakfast cereal mixed with ice cream as their monthly special right now. I got the fruity pebbles in a vanilla shake.
When I say that was the most fragrant and over powering flavor I've had in a very, very long time I am not kidding. I could only eat about a 1/3rd of it before I was done. I'm not sure if the cold ice cream ramps up the cereal but man alive that was bonkers. One and done for me.
Lucky Charms tied with Count Chocula which is somehow not on this list. Get a little crazy and do a bowl of both of them and that was gonna be a great day. Cocoa Puffs and Apple Jacks 2 and 3
From this list: Kix, Honey Bunches of Oats and Special K.
But I was also the weird kid who was obsessed with Just Right! It had a white box with a spoon on it and my grandparents always had it. I was an old soul, lol
I loved kix but I remember them tasting kind of like... cardboard maybe? Don't get me wrong I would never turn down a bowl of kix but they were different.
I do not remember Just Right but I love your backstory
Ok, Frosted Flakes, Lucky Charms (for the marshmallows), and Apple Jacks!
Real Question 🙋🏻♀️ Here… do we get Gen X prizes in boxes? Because if so, I may reconsider!
I like mixing cereals. I'll almost never have only 1 in a bowl.
Also... I want my cereal partially soggy. Whats the point of adding milk if you just want crunchy cereal? Just have it plain in a bowl with a glass of water!
I mix it around in the bowl to make sure every piece soaks up some milk. Then I enjoy.
Especially good for stuff like min wheats, rice krispies, chex, etc.
I'm not sure but I haven't had cereal in such a long time like literally 20 years.
And this is making me want to drive back in.
I really liked Captain crunch back in the day especially the peanut butter one. But I'm looking at all of these with very fond memories. Ice cold milk with crunchy cereal is the greatest thing. I need to go back. To the store and buy all these.
I haven’t eaten any of them in many, many years, but frosted mini wheats were my favorite, and for two others I would go with Frosted Flakes and Honey Nut Cheerios. We were not allowed sugar cereals very often when I was a kid so when we got them it was a huge treat, most were way too sweet though.
It’s amazing…I probably haven’t had cereal in over 30 years and I can still taste every single one! (Except Krave and Oops All Berries, never heard of.)
