It's irrational because they are the ones benefitting the most from the current system. If they would use all that talent and resources to make the world a better place, they could be true heroes.

After all, most of us only want to live an average life with friends and family.

We see advance in anti-aging and human augmentation. The endgoal might be more dystopian and evil than we currently can imagine.
