Why does my Tahoe keep going into reduce engine power?

Hi, my dad has a Chevy tahoe (2016 i believe) a while back in like 2020 the dealership effed it up after we brought it in for coding issues because it got towed and the key wouldn’t work. if it goes above 2,500 RPM (around 30 miles per hour) it’ll start sounding like a damn semi and will not go faster, then it went into REP, after that the car would no longer accelerate past 10 MPH (it was a sad ride home, luckily we only got a mile away) we reset the codes with my dads scanner thing the REP light disappeared but it won’t go above 10 MPH and it sounds like it won’t switch gears..? It genuinely sounds as if a semi is trying to speed up, but also as if someone is revving the engine if you try to go past 10 MPH. You could literally give all your might to the gas pedal and it will not speed up and like I said, just sound like a semi. We literally just replaced the car battery and the remote key batteries, obviously there are more problems but even with my dad having mechanic experience he’s just stumped. I’m the only one helping him and I personally have a fear of working on cars and even driving them (stupid yeah but I hate cars i genuinely would rather go my whole life without driving one or fixing one) and I can’t rlly help him to my fullest because of my fears stopping me lol. My dad doesn’t ask outside people for help so just wanted some help onto what it might be. I’d add videos and pictures of the codes but it won’t let me. Oh another thing, when we shut off the car the fan kept going even tho the engine was off, my dad said it probably overheated then he checked the codes and got it to stop. The dealership did smth to the car and ever since it’s just a peice of crap car. We haven’t been able to actually drive it in YEARS because of it. We just wanna sell it or trade it in, but obviously we have to fix it first. Genuinely wish the car would just get ripped apart by a tornado but til then we will try to fix it 😭
Thank you for any ideas or suggestions.

Just wondering what the dealership said? Did your father call them on it? That's got to be frustrating as hell. Wish I had an answer for you. Maybe a solenoid or some relay? I'd take it to a Trans shop. An independent with good reviews. Let the pain end.

Okay so, my dads car got towed back in 2020 ish bc of some stupid shi, I didn’t wanna add that detail bc then I’d feel the need to explain the whole thing and yk some ppl just assume the worse and decide to be a dick about it. but they towed the truck, some dude programmed a new key and then when we got the car back our own keys didn’t work and the key he programmed what shitty and didn’t work. So my dad took it too the dealership to fix the old keys, he did that but the cars automatic stuff was still not working. I have no idea how that programming stuff correlates to how our engine is fucked too, but idk I’m not a car person. The dealership just did nth about it since the previous reason was ig our own fault. But they just messed up the car more and didn’t bother fixing their own mistake and expected a LOT of money. I’d bet that another factor is us letting the car just gain dust for a few years is another reason for it not working. We’ve moved it like..5 times since this problem but not a regular use.

Man, that's frustrating as hell. And they didn't take responsibility for what they did. And maybe didn't have the skilled techs to unfk what they did. Been there. Its like fighting a war and sooner or later tou just kinda give up. Wish I had some answers for you.

Yeahhh, definitely 😭 we kinda gave up after a few months of my dad working on it and then just let it collect dust lol but thanks for the input! I really appreciate anything.

Shot in the dark here because I don’t really know the vehicle, but here goes.
The REP is more commonly known as limp mode. The vehicle systems decided, for whatever reason, that it should limit power output to protect itself.
If the key was having issues, there might be a chance that the security system needs looking into. For that, you’d probably have to find a dealer or shop that has the specific software to do so.
Do you know the codes? Don’t need pictures, just the codes would help.

We did go to the dealer ship and that’s actually when the REP stuff started after one of the people did stuff to it idek. But I have pictures of the codes my dad told me to take (I assume they are notable) P0068, P0420, P0011 those are the ones he showed me.

Okay cool. Not sure how much your dad wants to work on it himself, but he could fully inspect the electrical connections & fluids.
If there’s no obvious issues; then the P0068 code is where I would start. The MAF & MAP sensors directly affect how your engine runs. If they get confused, it could mess things up.
There are ways to test them to see if they’re functioning correctly. If no issues are found still, then it gets more tricky.
Being as it’s already been sitting for a while, it might be better to bite the bullet & sell it for a loss at that point, unless your dad is really committed to fixing it.
Hope it works out for you both.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it. Imma be real, my dad wants to get it working bare minimum and trade it to the same ppl who fucked him over for a new truck 😭 bc to the bare eye the car looks perfectly fine and if we fix the engine issues and shit programming realistically it’ll be fine, from what my dad says atleast. I’m surprised it’s not already fixed seeing he’s a programmer/engineer lol.

Right on lol
Hopefully the issue is something simple & cheap that went overlooked. Wish you both the best of luck
