I tried to get my dad to play Skyrim once and he just couldn’t figure out how to move. Like the dude would just be staring at the ground walking into a wall. Id tell him he was just walking into a wall and he’d say “oh” and slowly correct himself then do it again. After about an hour we managed to beat the tutorial and he said he never wanted to play again.
Dad and I were cod zombies guys. He’s a pretty straight edge guy who will routinely have a cup of tea and be in bed before midnight, but Der Riese has us hunched in front of the CRT at like 3AM grinding zombies. I miss those days and i don’t see him very often anymore.
I do know he recently purchased a next gen console for purely for himself, which is unbelievably out of character for his tight ass. Maybe i should call him
I know a dude, who used to play a LOT in his 20s. He had sabotaged all the work in our office by bringing the likes of Diablo 2 and homm3 there. Nowadays he doesn’t play at all. No new games, no old games. He is just not interested in it. It happens.
Guiding my mom through Elden Ring is a top 5 moment in my life.
Sure I had to recite essentially an entire guide to her three times over but we had fun. Anon should appreciate his dad more and learn to enjoy the time spent together.
Hell yeah that’s my grandads favourite game. He’s not the best at it but one of my favourite memories with him was watching him beat Malenia after he’d struggled for weeks
That sounds really fun. Did she end up completing the game? And what was the biggest hurdles for her learning?
In my experience I think learning controls is probably the biggest hurdle as things just aren’t intuitive for people who aren’t immersed in gaming already.
She did! She even beat the DLC and every Remembrance boss. I think her biggest struggle at first was stamina management since it wasn’t something she dealt with in other games. She even beat Bloodborne later.
As someone who started with DS2 my biggest learning curve was everything ngl. (Still love the game.)
Im so proud my mom also just got to level 165 on elden ring she always asks me to play that or hytale or Minecraft but life has been so hectic to game with her. Hopefully I can and make up time
Biggest reason i got into gaming was thanks to my brothers and my dad. When ocarina of time came out me and my dad played through it together, he wasn't that good at playing but he could figure out stuff so having him figuring out puzzles and me playing it was a pretty good memory growing up.
when i was younger, my dad bought LOZ Twilight Princess for our Wii console thinking it was the same Zelda game he played when he was younger only to find out it wasn’t and he didn’t know how to work the wii controls anyway so he let us have a whack at it. any time we progressed in the game or did something cool he’d go “how’d you do that??”
I'm doing... ok? Sometimes it's hard to know, feeling so inept and powerless most of the time, how you're doing as a dad. I'm a different dad than my dad. I have a hard time motivating myself to do things any more (I'm coming back from a really bad mental... event) but I sit with my kids while they do their hobbies and it's really awesome to see the stuff they're into. I can see some of my influence in there (music) and some from their mother (books) and then there's what they pick up on their own. It's such a cool thing to see. I was afraid it wasn't enough, like it didn't really matter if I was there or not. But by reading this comment section I think I'm doing ok.
If he wanted to connect, he would put some effort into it
Asking "Are you winning son" 100 times, and you have to all over again answer him "no dad, you don't win in minecraft, I just build stuff" is freaking annoying, and dad doesn't fucking care and keeps forgetting it 5 min later
My dad sucked at every videogame except for bowling and pinball which he always beat me at. It's like pure dad DNA ran through him, giving him abilities beyond comprehension specifically for those 2 game types.
Wish my dad had ever played games with me besides maybe once. Wish he had even watched me play. Wish he had even watched me. Wish he had even been in my life before I was already grown.
One of my best friend's mom got him Twilight Princess on Wii and she ended up loving the game. She was so stoked to tell us when she beat it. I was genuinely impressed. I miss her, she was awesome. Cancer is a fucking bitch.

gladly my mother takes interest in whatever shit i get interested in, and i’m very happy to tell her about it, even if she doesn’t understand, i’ll just try to simplify it and it works 99% of the time. same with helping her with her phone/laptop, i just explain what i do/did and give instructions what to do with it/what to do to prevent it(if it’s a program crash for example) // my father on the other hand doesn’t care even a little, ever since i became a teenager he stopped caring, not even talking about adult age

You don't connect with someone by getting them to do something you like. You connect with them by doing something they like.

Teach him and get a gaming partner. I remember playing against my dad in unreal tournament. He would panic at run when we shot at him. So much fun.
