Congress Introduces Bill to Permanently Block Chinese Vehicles from U.S.

More protectionism / corporatism from the Republicans. Pathetic.
TryMyBacon@reddit
Chinese vehicles are subsidized by the CCP to be more affordable that is the problem with them. It would basically be the CCP trying to undercut the American manufacturing base that we will need.

The simple fact is the method of producing cheap products is not a valid reason to introduce government overreach on the markets.
It's not the government's place to protect our businesses from the free market. If the free market overseas finds a way to do things cheaper, even through government subsidies, so be it. Ford and Chevy may die, but the average American citizen benefits more from cheap Chinese cars than they do the existence of Ford or Chevy.
TryMyBacon@reddit
A Government subsidizing vehicles to artificially make them cheaper is not free market. They didn't find a way to do anything cheaper. They are simply covering the losses that the Chinese auto companies are taking to sell a cheaper product to undermine manufacturing in other countries.
Zromaus@reddit
I knew someone would say this..
“China subsidizing cars isn’t free market” is true to their internal market, not the world's, and banning or taxing Americans from buying those cars isn’t free market either. That just replaces Chinese government distortion with U.S. government protectionism.
If another country wants to eat losses so Americans get cheaper goods, American consumers benefit, as Milton said. Protecting Ford and Chevy by making everyone else pay more is an ass backwards but very real form of corporate wellfare.

Yeah my understanding is that’s what they’re trying to do in Europe. Undercut on pricing to take market share to stifle local manufacturers possibly out of business, leaving them with an advantageous position.
I’m all for a freeish market but not shenaniganry like this. It stinks and will fuck us over in the long run. What’s the alternative, try to beat them at their own game? I don’t want to subsidize manufacturers with my taxes, I’d rather just nip the potential problem now.

Everything Congress's does is HIGHLY questionable. China sucks and unrepentantly steals designs and technology. Still, competition is inherently better for consumers. I'm torn. I'm ready to be educated by those who know better.
Last_Comedian_5043@reddit
It's rough, because patents are such a barrier of entry to free markets. One one hand I like how China does not respect copy right. On the other hand, the way China operates feels off. I can't exactly articulate it.

It’s all being billed as saving the us auto industry and thus thousands of blue collar jobs but everyone’s moving to automation and those jobs are dying anyway so there’s got be a more corrupt reason.
idontagreewitu@reddit
And the great majority of what blue collar jobs remain are in Mexico and Canada, and have been for a loong time.
PorcupineWarriorGod@reddit
There is. It's not about saving the blue collar jobs. Its about saving the 6-7 figure white collar jobs at the top of the American Auto industry, who donate generously to campaigns.
UnSCo@reddit
Just wanna mention it’s funny how red states have the most restrictions on direct sales and service. Dealers lobby against domestic manufacturers to artificially maintain local markets, and domestic manufacturers lobby against foreign manufacturers to artificially maintain US marketshare. Big chain of corporate/bureaucratic BS.
EV_M4Sherman@reddit
Protectionism is bad. A competing country flooding an industry to drive out competition and wipe out industry in your own country is bad too.
A loss of an industry like the auto industry has massive consequences. We’ve seen it in other industries as manufacturering moves, so does development and innovation.
So while the American consumer will benefit from cheaper cars in the short while, this is an investment by China to destroy our industry and build there’s up. They don’t care about the short term losses.

Uhh...
"Co-signed by a Republican and a Democrat from Michigan."
"Debbie Dingell, a Michigan Democrat"
"While an executive order signed by Joe Biden in early 2025 already imposed heavy restrictions, the new bill would codify and expand on the ban"
"It joins a companion version of the same Connected Vehicle Security Act introduced last month to the Senate by Sen. Bernie Moreno, an Ohio Republican, and Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat. While the wording is similar to that found in former President Biden's January 2025 executive order, the new bill would codify the language into law, as well as determine rules for compliance and enforcement."

Pretty sure this is about as Bipartisan as it can get....

So much for a free market. Gotta love capitalism! /s
broomosh@reddit
Sure let's also ban everything else from China.
Oh wait thats where USA big corporations make everything
They get to take advantage of China labor and industry to profit so I should too.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
"Small government free market capitalist" Republicans everyone!
rationis@reddit
You can't have a free market if your adversary doesn't. Otherwise you have a free market while your enemy has an unfair advantage and eats your lunch.

Milton speaks of this. Foreign subsidies are a boon to American consumers since it gifts us their tax dollars effectively.
If foreign governments want to use their taxpayers' money to provide us with cheap goods, we should send them a 'thank you' note, not a tariff. - Milton

What about blocking Chinese spies?
