1969 Ford F-100 Ranger: Seller Asking $19K - Fair Price?
Posted by poxshops@reddit | projectcar | View on Reddit | 28 comments
This truck is a few hours away. Has some work that needs to be done. Not a lot, though.
Description from the seller's listing.
"1969 Ford F-100 Ranger Bumpside
Long Bed. Twin I-beam suspension. Original motor V8 360. New tires with the original Ford hubcaps. Drum brakes may need to be replaced soon (Update: rear brakes replaced, front okay for now). New brake booster. New headlights. New main gas tank (has dual tank. The main tank is new & the one in the cab needs to be replaced if used) I don’t use it. Tint windows, electrical work done (signal lights works, reverse white light not working). Bed liner. Velvet interior with velvet headliner. Automatic transmission. New AC compressor with cold AC. Bluetooth music. Flow exhaust. Haven’t found a windshield guy that’s willing to replace the front as they’re too scared to touch it. Runs and drives great. I drive it on weekends and daily it one or two times a week (nothing long distance yet). "
The current tailgate is wood.
The yellow tailgate (pictured) is the original that comes with it.
What do you think is $19,000 a fair price?
If not, what is your suggested ask?
alwaus@reddit
Id want to get under it and check for rust but otherwise it looks great.

OP, the price really varies based on area. However, if you asking if 19k is a good price for something you can just drive and not have to tinker with for years and years to come (assuming motor and trans are good) then the answer would be "yes". I see all the modern options on this truck for this to be feasible. If you can't budget the 19k, then pass and look for something else that you may need to make repairs in before it is a confident daily driver.

50+ year old daily driver kinda crazy
I_amnotanonion@reddit
Depends on how it’s set up. I daily a 1979 Mercedes and it does just fine. Parts are pretty cheap and it’s reliable. Any spec F100 should do fine assuming you aren’t trying to blast along on the interstate for crazy long periods if you’re still running an I6 and a 3 speed.
You do have to tinker more, but it ain’t bad
Meadowsauce@reddit
Please tell me where these cheap parts for old Mercedes’s are. Would love to not spend $5000 to fix the AC on my ‘81 380sl
I_amnotanonion@reddit
lol, I was just talking consumables, but daggum that’s high. I think I spent a total of $2k doing the sanden conversion on my 240D. I got parts off of eBay for that stuff, consumables I get on rockauto or pelican parts.
You can get some local ag shops to fabricate ac lines/tubing for cheaper than buying one specifically for the car

Everytime I’m even in my 98 Integra I feel the interior is outdated, but I guess a simple mods could fix that

When I'm done with work I'm going to hop in my 1960 T-Bird and cruise back home. Nothing wrong with dailying a classic as long as you can wrench.
chompz914@reddit
12k max bid. Already stating one tank is bad going to need the brakes done needs reverse light done. And windshield needs to be replaced. Also an unfinished tailgate. You’re going to pay 19k for a project which when finished will be worth 19k. That’s not accounting for any issues with the work this guy has already preformed.
Motorhead01@reddit
Easy. If you’re not sure you shouldn’t do it.
ekowalski_oma@reddit
19k is steep for one that still needs frame work and electrical sorted. I've got a 78 F-100 I've been working on for three years -- these older trucks look better than they drive if the restore was done piecemeal. I'd start with a lower offer and get under it first. Check the frame rails and wiring loom before anything else -- that's where the expensive surprises hide.
Worst-Lobster@reddit
Seems like a good deal
FormulaZR@reddit
I don't think you could find a donor truck and duplicate this for $19k. But I think it's only "worth it" if this is exactly the truck you want.
Radiant-Security-347@reddit
There goofy wiring all over the place. That’s a clue.
fLeXaN_tExAn@reddit
Dude, that aftermarket turn signal/hazard light set up is INSANE!!! LMAO!!!!!
Street_Mall9536@reddit
Body work looks like shhhhhhhhiiiiitttttt
Confident-Benefit600@reddit
That thing looks sweet
isnecrophiliathatbad@reddit
I'd get under it first for frame check and a loom check. Two things that always show how a vehicle was restored, corners cut with welding and electrical connections means trouble all round.
RustBeltLab@reddit
The painted bumpers scream corners cut before you even get underneath it.
Confident-Benefit600@reddit
So it’s a ranger with a painted grill and bumpers instead of chrome and polished aluminum
Big-Energy-3363@reddit
Not with that bed
RustBeltLab@reddit
Home paint job, home upholstery, assume the same shitty workmanship on the engine. Chrome and trim painted? Hard pass, would only pay what the glass and panels are worth. $3500 tops if it runs.
Eziekiel23_20@reddit
Its a 10k truck if in good condition, but that interior and color choice kills it for me. $8k.
Its a long bed w/ bad customization. Price it as such.
hangindawg@reddit
Frame would have to be perfect. Its annoying that it doesn't have the correct tailgate for that kind of money. The modern stuff probably actually makes it worth less money from a classic car angle. 19 is a bit steep. For 19 they could definitely get you a proper tailgate and make it match.
TheDunk67@reddit
Strikes me as quite high for a 2 wheel drive with slushbox.
Public_Enemy_No2@reddit
It'd be tough, but I'd give it to him.
But first id counter offer. Not a lowball offer, but a number that's fair to him and you.
Good luck.
Dinglebutterball@reddit
Offer 12, bite if he’ll take 14.
QueensGambit9Fox@reddit
Looks to be a 90ish% restored truck with some modern upgrades like the bluetooth and AC. I could see that being a decent price. If you look at that tailgate, imagine the whole think looking like that plus a full rebuild of all the mechanical everything. That amount of money is WAAAY higher than 19k on top of finding someone to work on it if you cant yourself.
