“So, when was the last time you had a week off?”

That’s what the doctor asked last month when I was diagnosed with tennis elbow. Sure, I probably need a little time away from my semi-physical job to heal. She didn’t particularly care for my answer when I told her that the last time this happened was when I took off March of 2024 after a heart attack.
Well, I guess I now have my week off. Pneumonia. Frigging pneumonia. I have memories of the last time I had it, back in high school, and like many memories it somehow involves food. During that extended period I ate nothing but cinnamon raisin toast and drank apple juice, two things I can no longer consume. After the doctor visit today I did hit the market, with face mask on of course, and stocked up for an extended stay at home. It’s a good thing I bought a fresh bottle of melatonin a few weeks back as I expect to consume it like it’s a snack.

I get 5 weeks off each year and I take every minute. I am also in the UK, so taking your holiday time is not frowned upon. I am currently on a week off.

Summer… 1989

I get 5 weeks of vacation per year, and the last time I took an entire week was 2015. I came back to so much work that had bounced around from my coworkers and landed back with me that I just don’t do it anymore.

In the middle of mine right now.

I get 3 weeks of vacation per year. Last one was last week of November. I have my first week off in 2 weeks, still deciding where I want to use the remaining 2 weeks.

About 2 and a half years ago. Im "essential" and "criticsl" but they won't hire an assistant for the 3 year vacant position.

I can’t even remember the last time I took a full week off. It’s been a very long time, I never have enough PTO to do so.

Time off at most companies in the USA is terrible

And if you go negative on your PTO balance you can be terminated - I was, right after battling cancer. Everything related to the cancer was covered by FMLA and reasonable accommodation but other illnesses were not. I still got colds and I still had migraines so they fired me at 5:00 PM on the last Friday of 2019 because I was out of PTO.
Outrageous_Drag6613@reddit
That’s sucks that they did that to you

The timing was great - I came home and found a flyer from HR about benefits that loudly proclaimed “Let’s make 2020 your best year yet!” I’ve kept it for the bitter irony of the whole situation.
My department was pretty well paid and they were looking to cut costs. The service we provided netted us about $70 less than we received in revenue from the end user; we probably received state/federal subsidies, but we were a money-losing operation that was mandated by law. Most of my team, at least those that didn’t die, were fired for one reason or another, and they used whatever loopholes they could find. It came as no surprise to me despite my good reviews and excellent rapport with the customers. My suspicions were really confirmed when I kept getting calls from recruiters offering me my old job, albeit on a temporary six-month contract, no benefits whatsoever and at $7/hr less than I used to make. I politely told them the fuck all the way off with that kind of stupid offer.

I get about 9 weeks off a year
Outrageous_Drag6613@reddit
Are you a teacher?

I just took last week off and the Thu/Fri the week before that. I try to take some time off around my birthday every year to work on hobbies and not think about work.
Outrageous_Drag6613@reddit
What is this time off you speak of?
I_love_Hobbes@reddit
Cinnamon raisin toast with the icing?

I took two weeks off in January to go to Hawaii. Best two weeks ever!
soup0001@reddit
Took a week off just after Easter, first in years - ended up 4 weeks in hospital with sepsis of the knee. Lucky I have just as much unused sick leave as normal leave.
LadyNorbert@reddit
Oof. I had pneumonia a few years back and it sucked. I hope you feel better soon.

Major surgery last summer here. Was off longer than a week. Don’t care to repeat that again. Didn’t otherwise take off time last year.
Planning on taking a week in June with the spouse and dogs to take a trip down to the coast.
murphydcat@reddit
I don’t think I’ve taken a continuous week off from work since 2019. I only get 12 PTO days annually so I save them for errands.
kevbayer@reddit
I'm unemployed, between jobs. So I've been off for the past three and a half months.
bandley3@reddit (OP)
Except for the lack of money I’ve really enjoyed being unemployed…
MaximumJones@reddit
I'm retired so I have every week off. 😁
