looked a bit smaller than a cessna 152, not sure what it could be?

See John Denver
2-4-Dinitro_penis@reddit
His had a dangerous modification that most likely caused his crash…
Designer-Salary-7773@reddit
Yeah ..i believe I read that Fuel valves were placed out of sight ..needed to reach over the pilot shoulder to make a change .. seems like that introduces a fair amount of pilot stress and possible uncertainty if the Lycoming is sputtering
2-4-Dinitro_penis@reddit
I think he couldn’t even reach it with his hand so he was using pliers to reach back and turn it while looking in a mirror.
The NDSB said bc it was so far back you would most likely stomp the opposite rudder pedal while twisting to reach it, and that’s probably what did it.
It’s a shame. Maybe the original builder could reach it no problem, but John Denver was a different build or something.
The reason the builder did this was bc he thought it would be less likely to catch fire in a belly slide or something iirc.

Long EZ
botany_bae@reddit
That is a Klingon Bird of Prey.
2-4-Dinitro_penis@reddit
Long EZ Cozy MKIV or MKIII Velocity or Velocity XL
These are all based on Burt Rhutan’s LongEZ an all have a similar shape. I think there’s more LongEZs in the wild that the others so I’d put my money on that one.

one day i'll be right when thinking it's a starship lol
Specialist_Reality96@reddit
The long Ez have a single pusher engine he starship has two, so even from this angle if you squint in the right manner you'll get it.

I don’t know of any flying examples any longer. They have one sitting at the evergreen air and space museum though. Gorgeous plane. Hopefully they restore it and move it inside… poor thing is rotting.
itchygentleman@reddit
Yep, I'm aware. Hopefully, one day, I'll be right though :)

Rutan, not Rhutan.

The Kingdom of Rhutan. Isn't that in the Himalayas?
2-4-Dinitro_penis@reddit
That’s Bhutan. Maybe that’s where I got the h though.

My bad bb 🥺
odinsen251a@reddit
No biggie, all your other info was correct. He happens to be a big reason I got into aviation and aerospace engineering. (Go Mustangs!)
2-4-Dinitro_penis@reddit
He’s certainly contributed a whole lot to aviation. I think it would be cool to fly a canard someday.
odinsen251a@reddit
He was a bamf. I watched an interview with him where he was talking about working for Jim Bede and developing the BD-5, and basically came to the conclusion that everything Bede had said about the aircraft's performance was a lie. Effectively Rutan had to go to his boss and say "you're full of shit and I can prove it mathematically."
2-4-Dinitro_penis@reddit
Damn… how did that go for Bede?
odinsen251a@reddit
Poorly. He basically got caught stealing from Peter to pay Paul for the project and his company ended up in bankruptcy. He had some good ideas for other aircraft but ultimately his company went bust, bought, sold, bust again several times. His airplanes have a less than stellar safety record, and he eventually died in 2015.
2-4-Dinitro_penis@reddit
Dang… Well I’m glad Rutan was the real deal.
After seeing that yellow long ez in the air shows I really think it must be a crazy good design.
Landscape4737@reddit
Canard. Small wings in front of rear wings. Easy to recover from a stall apparently. I built a balsa wood one a long time ago, a 2 channel RC would have flown it, but RC was too expensive then… Accidentally squashed it in an attic :-)
2-4-Dinitro_penis@reddit
Iirc The small canard wings stall before the man wings, which makes the nose dip, WHICH recovers you from a stall.
So the thing is basically stall proof.
On the downside, I think it’s hard to add BRS to them if you want that, and if you have an engine out you’re going into the beans pretty damn fast.
