The hacky sack is back

I am a teacher at a high school in CA. This past week, I have witnessed a not-small group of my male students playing with a hacky sack outside my classroom. Like, a group of 5-6, with more wanting to join in. Then it happened another day. Campus security had to break it up and send them on their way back to class. Today, I had a couple of boys finish their work early and ask if they could go outside and hacky sack for a little bit. My mind is blown.
altrudee@reddit
Yep, my highschool freshman kiddo came home about 2 weeks ago saying everyone was into hackey sacks.
daytonwestpark@reddit
I majored in hacky sack in college.
Abpoe77@reddit
We used to hacky sack in Navy steel toed boondocksers kids. If you miss and drop you gotta go up against the wall while we all get to chuck the hacky sack at you. We play for keeps 'round here. I have pictures in an old shoebox
vulgrin@reddit
Heh at my work we had a similar game. Except we’d just actively try to “sack” each other. The trick was to get just the right “snap” on the shot so that they didn’t see you winding up, but so it still stung.

At work there was a finish carpenter where most of his nine children worked for us at some point. Anyway, their uncle (the kids) invented the Hacky Sack. Mr. Hacky they called him.
Research_Liborian@reddit
Saw a big hacky sack circle of guys playing yesterday on lawn at Mamaroneck HS (NYC suburbs.)
Historical_Project86@reddit
I remember these. I had a flashback when our lovely volunteer at the local drug service used one to show us how to inject naloxone.
teacher860@reddit
It’s a coast-to-coast phenomenon, apparently… it became a thing at the high school where I teach in CT a few weeks ago. It’s hilarious; the kids think they invented it, as if their parents weren’t getting yelled at for kicking a hacky sack across the lunchroom 25 years ago.
TreaclePerfect4328@reddit
As a Tolland CT resident I played a ton in HS
SaltMarshGoblin@reddit
What year did you graduate from THS? (or what decade, if you don't want to be that precise)
TreaclePerfect4328@reddit
1993
KimmyGurl420@reddit
I still reflexively kick things I drop... It's hell when it's a knife or a glass...
Kvenya@reddit
Or canned goods. The struggle is real.
Gallowglass668@reddit
I saw some young men at my son's High School playing last week, definitely surprised me.
Leather-Highway5652@reddit
Same. Although, they call it “sacking” and use the “sack” so many times with zero self-awareness, as in “Bro, do you like my sack?” and “Sauce me your sack, bro.”
Five_String_Serenade@reddit
Sounds a bit 6-7’y
shawncollins512@reddit
Same in Austin and one of the high schools circulated a letter last week informing students that Hacky Sacks are banned at school.
Five_String_Serenade@reddit
You can bring your phone to school but you can’t play hacky sack at lunch. Boo!
reeferthetuxedocat@reddit
The sack may be back but my back, knees and hips will not be impressed as they often are when channeling my youth.

CosmicTurtle504@reddit
The OG pro version, not for noobs. The squishy knit ones are much more forgiving. Man, I played so much hackey sack on the quad with my buddies in high school. Good times!
NoSweatBetting@reddit
Team squishy knit here, not ashamed to admit I needed the handicap
But willing to take the L here if Butts Up is next
zombie_overlord@reddit
Those are so bouncy. I like the soft dirtbags.
ripsfo@reddit
The one I had!! Remember when it eventually got a hole, so you melted a couple of the beads to mend it?

Yes, I coach a 12u baseball team and the kids asked for a hacky sack while we were waiting to play. I was shocked.
HarveyMushman72@reddit
I can keep it up for days, I'm a sack aristocrat! Fun times in the smoking area at lunch break. Good to see it made a comeback. I was terrible at it, but I enjoyed playing.
Rattlehead71@reddit
I learned to play (and got quite good at) in our high school smoking area called "the pit".
fastslowloris@reddit
I was embarrassingly good at it. I sucked at sports but I could do all kinds of stalls and tricks. It would be fun to jump into a circle as a 50 year old and break out some old moves.
NateNMaxsRobot@reddit
You should do it.
HarveyMushman72@reddit
There was only one kid at my school that could rainbow.
fastslowloris@reddit
My crew had a rainbow routine of passing it back and forth right to left. We were pretty good. Nobody else gave a single fuck but we were having fun. I soon transitioned to roller hockey which was somehow even less cool.
Max_Gerber@reddit
It’s a thing at my kid’s school. Everything old is new again.
fixit858@reddit
Holding out for the yo-yo resurgence
nirreskeya@reddit
I've seen some kids hacking this spring in a park in my northern Idaho town. Warms my heart. :)
ripsfo@reddit
Yep. This was reported to me by my kid in middle school up in Marin County. Apparently the whole school is into it. Not just the ones hanging around the smoking area. 👴🏽
Luvsseattle@reddit
I love this! I jjust recently saw some ad (streaming service or animated billboard - can't remember) with a hacky sack. I can't even remember what was being advertised, but I remember the hacky sack.
zombie_overlord@reddit
I saw it this weekend too! I almost asked to join in for a bit
Carefree_Highway@reddit
You’d be a OG legend.
zombie_overlord@reddit
This thread has convinced me to get a dirtbag if I can still find one. So easy to stall those.
Carefree_Highway@reddit
Me too! And at least keep a look out for a game.
ShookMyHeadAndSmiled@reddit
The college where I work has a new hacky community. It's nice to see. If my knees weren't shot I'd show them how it's done
Thats-what-I-do@reddit
My local Facebook moms group has had a couple of posts desperately looking for hacky sacks for their kid’s birthdays (South Carolina).
Reader47b@reddit
They never heard of Amazon?
Voivode71@reddit
Was it ever gone?
SemperFudge123@reddit
Our oldest is a sophomore in high school and when I was getting ready with her the other morning she randomly mentioned that kids were playing hacky sack in their courtyard at lunch. I didn't really believe it.
Fast forward a few hours and I'm walking through a park in our downtown and there were TWO groups of teenagers in circles hacking!
When I got home later I dug out the two hacky sacks I've had sitting in the cabinet by our front door for years and years. I'm still terrible.
VonGrippyGreen@reddit
Remember that perfectly seasoned hack that was stretched, but not torn? Brand new was too bouncy. Had to stomp it a few times and play a rough game like cheese or red ass. Old hack too flat. Beads falling out, barely toe flip to start.
Perfectly seasoned hack lasted like two weeks of lunch hours and hanging around at the train station after school, just hacking and smoking.
Carefree_Highway@reddit
That’s why went right for a sipa sack. Kind of a knitted version of the original
root_fifth_octave@reddit
Let’s kick some hack
dirtytounder@reddit
Why would campus security have to break up a hack?
PAUL-E-D77@reddit
My son is a freshman in college but when he was in high school his cross country team was constantly playing hacky sack. The coach even got the seniors personalized ones at the end of the season.
Scrappyl77@reddit
It is! My kid was a hero bc when he told me we had an ancient one still from when I was 12 that we passed along to him. His friends couldn't believe he had one.
alinroc@reddit
Our high school just banned hacky sack. It's a "significant disruption" and now being treated the same as cell phones, which are banned during school hours by statewide law.
megar52@reddit
My kid is a senior and the entire baseball team warms up playing hacky. Probably cost them a few games 😆
Zealousideal_Sink420@reddit
My kid told me all about the new game a year or so ago. It’s been working its way around to mainstream again.
North_Artichoke_6721@reddit
I picked up my 13-yr old son from an activity this week and he was playing hacky sack with a small group of other boys when I got there.
He asked if we could make our own (I like to sew) so I made him a little one with 2 ounces of dry rice inside. He’s been practicing around the house. I’m just happy he’s off the tablet.
TortiTrouble@reddit
WI checking in. Saw some kids in the HS parking lot with one the other day. Did a double-take!
Locutus_Im_Bored@reddit
I saw some kids at the airport playing this past weekend!
WiscoDJ920@reddit
Were you in Vancouver?
Locutus_Im_Bored@reddit
Charlotte
WiscoDJ920@reddit
There is another comment from a user saying they were at the Vancouver airport and saw kids hacking. I had to find out if they were the same or if we have an international epidemic lol.
MasterWinstonWolf@reddit
🤣
MoveToPuntaGorda@reddit
I’ve heard it’s coming back.
bb9116@reddit
If you're not holding crappy keg beer in a plastic cup, are you really hacky sacking? 😊
PhoenixRising4242@reddit
I still have both of mine from highschool, I was just saying the other day how I want to teach my kids how to hack. They are still young, didn't have kids till my 40's.
marcduberge@reddit
Yes! I just saw my college BFF two weeks ago in Colorado (we are 57) and we went outside to hack in front of his house for a bit. I used muscles not used in a looooooong time. Love that it’s coming back
Repulsive_Client_325@reddit
Winnipeg Canada here. It’s a thing here too. I love it. Been trying for ages to get my kids to do it.
Bob_Sacamano7379@reddit
Not even kidding, I was just talking to a colleague today about "Why hasn't the hacky sack fad returned?"
StJmagistra@reddit
I thought it was just my school! I teach in Alabama and the last two weeks the kids have been playing with hackey sacks constantly!
DrHoleStuffer@reddit
I haven’t hackied a sackie since the early 90’s. I remember when the koosh ball first came out and we would try it with them. Not as easy to work with.
jacklogan2972@reddit
My HS age daughter told me kids are playing it again.
jnyrdr@reddit
love it….we played every day at lunch in high school
Ahkhira@reddit
Jeez... my friends and I all used to work 2nd shift. We'd meet up at the 24 hour Dunkin Donuts after work, get coffee at midnight, and play hackey sack until the local cops told us to go home.
I hope kids get to do the same thing now.
There's a lot worse things that they could be doing.
Oldandcranky973@reddit
I work in a store that sold out of them immediately when they came in— they were called “foot bags” 😂
I knew exactly what they were when I saw them and had to explain to my employees
Tranesblues@reddit
Middle school teacher here. I've been playing with them all week. Apparently I'm the goat!!
Not_a_fan_of_me@reddit
I just had a conversation with some friends about this last week. For some of us, it never went away

I love this update on wholesome activities.
AdEastern9303@reddit
Wholesome? We always played in my friend’s garage in 20 degree weather while everyone was drinking and passing a joint around. I’d still say it was wholesome because we weren’t out gettting into trouble.
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
A young Brewers closer had a season-ending injury playing hacky sack not long ago.

I am a high school teacher. I have also noticed this trend.
norkraswocken@reddit
100% my kid is trying to figure it out
delldarlin@reddit
AFAIK they've come gone and come and gone… or maybe just never went away in the first place. Hacky sacks are cheap and fun.
cptwranglr@reddit
If there is a sack to be hackied, I’m there dude
doobette@reddit
My high school had a hacky sack club while I was there in the mid-'90s.
NoSweatBetting@reddit
Pro-tip for graybeards: if you go viral, make sure it's off a wicked head-stall & not a sprained ankle
Stretch regularly. Move it or lose it.
Huge_Razzmatazz_985@reddit
Back! I've been playing since the 80s
wheresbill@reddit
I haven’t played since the 80s but it was really fun. I’d love to kick a foot bag around again
upv395@reddit
Now you have to blow their minds and bring out the devil sticks.
wheresbill@reddit
Please don’t
Uranus_Hz@reddit
Attended my sons college graduation over the weekend and he and his friends busted out the sack and started playing. Blew my mind. They sucked at it though.
