If there's only a few amount of men then there wouldn't be enough genetic diversity on the male side to properly repopulate. The future generations would all become genetically related due to having the same 3-5 or so male ancestors and therefore become inbred as a result.

I haven’t seen this show, so I don’t know how many men we have to work with. But the Polynesian colonization of New Zealand is estimated to be 70 people in total. Which is actually a lower than what modern simulations would recommend. (~50 men to ~50 women and very careful pairings) 4 billion women should give some lead way. So I think we need somewhere around 25-35 men to make this work.

I know there's something called the 50/500 rule which helps determine the amount of individuals a society needs in order to not risk inbreeding. I'm not sure how it would work if one gender has significantly more individuals than the other side though.

I’m actually curious about the same thing now. In theory, you’d want as many children as possible with different women to create as much genetic diversity as possible. But the more one father spreads their genes, the greater the risk of inbreeding becomes. We can mitigate this through selective pairing, but is there a point of reproduction where we actually get diminishing returns regardless? I genuinely have no idea.

That makes it even more confusing about why things are falling apart in just 1 year. If AI is advanced enough to do basically every job and people only work for fun, why does it matter if half the population disappears? AI would just continue doing everything for them, and most of the people probably weren't doing work to help maintain the AI anyways, since working is optional. Did the AI implode for some reason? If so, isn't that more likely the cause of the issues, rather than the lack of men?

That's one of the biggest plot holes with the Thanos snap, shit would have looked like 28 days later by the time they were unsnapped. In OP example, the uneven distribution of male and female roles in different industries would have even worse effects than the snap, as many vital roles would effectively vanish entirely with no ramp to retrain survivors

Capability isn't the problem, the problem is who are the women gonna learn from how to do a lot of these jobs that were mostly if not all men, when all the men disappeared? There'd be a huge knowledge shortage in so many industries. A lot of jobs require months to years of training to do properly, and textbooks and videos only can cover so much, a lot of valuable experience in the field keeping modern life afloat was passed down through generations of men by direct instruction and word of mouth.

I’d think that having the population halved would hurt a lot of logistics in general.
Remove the gender and Thanos snap the population and you’ll get similar results.
Certain areas where men make up the workforce would be hurt worse in the post scenario, but that is mostly due to the immediate lack of bodies in those positions.
