747 Diverting to JFK today. Flaps down super early due to landing weight

2000’. It was trailing another Atlas air 747, which is how I noticed it on the radar in the first place. Flaps and slats super early due to high landing weight from diversion.

I'm surprised that they chose KJFK, out of all the airports in the region. That can't be a cheap landing.
Must have been pretty urgent to get down ASAP.
GravitasFailures@reddit
Long runway, if you need to get down at high weight you want to go to JFK, LGA is shorter by a good bit, as is EWR.

What kinda cost are we talking about? I've always wondered what planes are charged to land at a given airport.

Dude, its the internet, so.....

Atlas has an established operation at JFK complete with a warehouse and mechanics. Better to divert there than some random airport where they have nothing.

Idk if atlas cares, they fly in there multiple times daily. Probably a good spot if you know there’s fleet support available
Nyaos@reddit
We have a base there so it’s a no brainer alternate.
ctishman@reddit
Ahh good point. If they have a base there that makes sense.

Interesting, I didn't know that the slat/flap configuration depended on the landing weight. I'm just a casual aviation geek and never flown a plane. (Not in real life anyway, lol).
GravitasFailures@reddit
Slats are leading edge slats, the little things that drop down at the front of the wing to reduce stall threshold by changing the chord of the wing, adding a small gap for air to flow.
Flaps are the long things that crank out and down from the back that dramatically increase low-speed lift and also reduce stall speed.
TheDarkVaderF1@reddit
Or they’re burning more fuel to bring down weight?
charlie_30@reddit
The 747 slats aren't actually slats, they're krueger flaps which are quite different in their geometry to conventional aircraft slats.
Fizzy_Astronaut@reddit
Yeah slats are a kind of high lift devices on the leading edge of the wing.
lovt16@reddit (OP)
I think it’s because a heavier plane needs to fly faster, but ATC needs you to go slow because JFK is extremely busy so you put out the high lift devices
HappyGnumff@reddit
How do you know it was a high landing weight?
Myfooty94@reddit
The MLW for the Boeing 747-400 is 630,000 lbs (285,760 kg), so I wonder what the diversion could be about.
unfortunatetourista@reddit
652,000 for the freighter.

What do you mean
caaper@reddit
He means that they got diverted so the heavier mass of fuel still on-board means that the net weight might have been close to max landing weight (MLW). So, they used max flaps early to slow down and ease the descent
Ecthelion-O-Fountain@reddit
I mean why did he bring up the number. Like what’s he getting at. It’s pretty normal for a big plane to be over max landing for long time so almost any problem in the first half of the flight would be a factor.

What a gorgeous aircraft, definitely deserves to be called the Queen
