if you had to make a Big 5 for the UK, what would it be?

What is our equivalent to the big 5?
- Red Deer Stag
- Otter
- Golden Eagle
- Basking Shark
- Red Squirrel
The above would be my first punt, but what about orca? Or badgers? Humpback whales? Does there need to be a land 5 and a water 5? Our water game is much better than our land game (because I think we killed everything). An air 5? Is that too many 5s?
Should we allow semi feral or even farmyard things, like the highland cow, or the dartmoor ponies?
councilsoda@reddit
You got to put Orca in there.

I feel like our best ones really are all sea based. Should we have a sea one and a land one? Is that cheating? Who even makes the rules? Then we should probably also have an air one so the birds don't feel left out.
councilsoda@reddit
Yeah land, sea and air sounds completely sensible. What subterranean? Moles, earthworms... actually, hang on that's clearly a step too far.
EFNich@reddit (OP)
I have even added feral/farm on my private list, so highland cows, dartmoor ponies.
I accept your subterranean addition! What about one for trees? What are our coolest trees?
Also amphibians.
councilsoda@reddit
Oak is the classic but who doesn't love a Horse Chestnut? What about mushrooms? I still have never seen a fly agaric in the wild and would love to.
EFNich@reddit (OP)
Fly Agaric would have to be on there, chestnut, willows (although I think the weeping willow is an import), oak, ivy?

What would you swap out for swans? I personally think swans are cunts
Inevitable-Slide-104@reddit
Sorry, thought you was asking about the big five animal cunts in the UK
EFNich@reddit (OP)
Biggest cunts in the animal kingdom UK:
- Geese
- Swans
- Wasps
??
laoxue@reddit
Other than badger - Highland Cow, Clydesdale horses, Shetland Ponies, Kestrel, Great Uncle Bulgaria and Orinoco.
cuccir@reddit
For the sea, replace leatherback turtle with sea otter I reckon. They are resident here, more representative
EFNich@reddit (OP)
Robins are the UK's favourite bird, Ravens are super cool, huge and can talk. Pigeons are wonderful.
Grouse are French imports I think (no offence to the French or grouse) and are dumb af.
I do love a red kite and think they should make the list.
Curlews are also super cool.

Feels like a Puffin should be on the bird list

I’d nominate harvest mice for land animals, but I’m very fond of rodents so I get this may not be the people’s choice 😅

Badger
Scottish Wildcat
Stoat
Wild Boar
Sea Eagle
EFNich@reddit (OP)
Just learned about sea eagles and they are very cool. Should we just cheat and put "eagles"?
Wildcat deserves to be on the list, but what to bump off?
Wild boar is cheating as theyve only just been reintroduced

Apparently North Americans don't have robins like ours, some of them thought the red breasted Christmas robin they'd seen on cards, etc, was made up like santa lol. So get that little fella on the list
EFNich@reddit (OP)
Thats super cute but they really need to invest more in their education system. Theyre on the air list! I love robins

I have apparently never had an original thought in my life.
Although we didn't really get very many serious answers, unless we should indeed just choose "wasps, golden retriever, foxes, ant and dec"

I'm not sure Reddit is the place for serious answers 😂
