We’ve reached the age to get rid of stuff & not making it our kids’ problem. What do you still have?

I donated most of my records and most of my vhs collection but I still have 2 vcrs, 2 dvd players, 1 record player, a stack of 80s stereo equipment from Pioneer and a dvd collection in a rotating tower.
CD collection in a zippered album, a red rotary phone, tape cassette player, Walkman CD player, mp3 players, Polaroid camera with film, old cell phones, tablets and the list goes on
I’ve donated most of my book collection but still have two shelves of treasured paperbacks. I’ve digitized most of my parents old photos, but what to do with the old albums and boxes of stray photos?

They’ll all be the next generations problems. I’ve gotten rid of a lot of clothes, knick-knacks, attic stuff, and childhood toys they didn’t want. I’ll be donating Halloween & Christmas decor next. next.

Get rid of all that stuff you look at in boxes but don’t ever use

Each person who attends my funeral will be leaving with a large box of books, several dvds, and a kitchen gadget of their choice. If they don’t, I may haunt them, and their streaming movies will always buffer at inopportune times.

It feels good to purge things, and I don't like clutter. That being said, I have no idea what to do with this. I don't have kids, and my nephews have no interest in LOTR. I have a couple of friends with record players, and younger kids, and they also declined. To me, this shit is gold, but I don't know. Also not worth too much on Ebay, considering the condition of the box. I guess I'll keep it for now...
Top-Net779@reddit
Clutter is objective. One person’s clutter sparks another person’s joy. Ideally, you have a couple decades to deal with it. 😉

I had that when I was a kid. Wow that brings back memories.

My wife and I have started this process to a degree. Our rule is that we have to get rid of 5 things or two trash bags of junk a week. Our goal is to downsize our house in 6–7 years and we want to be lightweight when we move. The kids are out of the house, so it’s not that hard to get rid of things.
Accomplished-B@reddit
I've filled a large dumpster twice in the last 10 years, I'm down to about 40 totes worth of stuff, and slowly culling what's left. I'm trying to stop adding things (but damn lego need to chill or I need to learn to stop looking). Furniture wise I have my bedroom stuff. I recently moved in with my older kids, so the rest of the house is their stuff. All three kids have "claimed" what they want of mine, so, as i become ready to let more go, I will :)
Wen-Mal68@reddit
I’m 58 and my wife is 56. She and I both want to do this, but she wants to do it much more extreme than I. She wants to get rid of almost everything I believe and I only things of non- value or no longer of any use. Even then I am more cautious telling her look how things turn from old to antique and with that from worthless to treasure. She also makes the comment she doesn’t want our only child to have to deal with it all when we’re gone. I say she will have a lot of things to deal with anyway and a week invested in that would honestly be more profitable to our child than she believes. Oh, well it will all work out.

It seems when one gets out on their own and fairly established they’re obsessed with having spending power, buying all sorts of stuff.. Approaching middle age one realizes maintaining all that stuff is actually kindof a drag and the purge begins.. At least that’s the cycle I’ve observed in my own and other people’s lives.
I moved a couple years ago and that was a big leap forward in stuff eliminating.. You get tired of boxing it and just toss it instead!

Yes, you spend the first part of your life wanting things, the next part of your life accumulating things, and the last part getting rid of things

I purge regularly. Minimalist living means: more $ saved for retirement, cleaner home, also helps keep my mind and emotions uncluttered.

I also live alone, no children and no family. I don't know who's problem my stuff will be, but I'm not worried about it.

Both of my parents became Ill a few weeks apart and ended up in a nursing home. They rent so I had to vacate their place. My Father was very organized and saved everything. The task was exhausting and though all furniture was given to family or donated i still have a packed storage unit. My garage at home contains even more.
I won't put my family through the same thing.

Not much. My mom was a hoarder. I keep nothing that I don't use. I always have a box or bag that I'm filling to take to Goodwill ir wherever. Somehow I ended up with a bunch of old suitcases. I've been filling those up instead of boxes.
blueberryheat@reddit
I've ditched the books, cookbooks, CDs, DVDs, VHS, and vinyl (except for collectable/sentimental items). It's all streaming and fits in my pocket now. Donated all my old concert tshirts (some reseller probably made a pile of money off me). I have maaaaybe 1 more video game console upgrade in my future, but I'm thinking of going digital only. I love going minimalist. About all I have now are basic kitchenware, basic living room/ bedroom furniture. A couple weeks worth of clothes. A couple guitars and some crafting items. I love not feeling cluttered when I get home.
Tony-the-teacher@reddit
Bought one of those old travel suitcase. If my stuff does not fit in it, it is not important nor of value.
I downsized from a 10 room place to that. Never saw so much shit out the door
ElsieDCow@reddit
I downsized from a 2000 sq ft house with 3 outside storage closets to 900 square ft condo. I feel like I've done my share of decluttering, but I still try to reduce my stuff every once in a while.
Different_Ask_3413@reddit
I moved 850 miles away 6 years ago - downsized from the family acreage/4 bd home and barn, stuffed with 35 years of accumulation (my ex was a "collector" and left me to deal with it)
Had an auction, had a dumpster, many trips to Goodwill - I got rid of roughly 90% of all our possessions, sold the property
Sometimes moving and being forced to deal with all the stuff is the only way, IMO
vaspost@reddit
The thing about pictures is the are only meaningful if the pictures are labeled. Date, Location, and names of people. With this information they are priceless... without it they are just taking up space.
Top-Order-2878@reddit
I have generations worth of scanned pictures. Most of them identified and roughly dated. The thing is I know who many of the people are, their relation ect but I never knew them. Those pictures don't mean much to me.
At a certain point they might as well be strangers, or a strangers album. I don't care to maintain that info, and store the photos.
I guess I'm not into genelogy enough to care.
It just becomes digital crap that still follows us around like the physical crap.
My opinion I guess.
somekindofwonderful-@reddit
I just inherited a bunch of stuff from my mom. She had good taste and had good, usually antique, stuff that unfortunately takes up a lot of room in my place. I don't have a lot of use for her stuff, but it's hard to figure what to do with it. I kind of wish she had more junk so I could toss it.
Taminella_Grinderfal@reddit
So I went through this recently. My mom had a lot of quality items and some antiques, the challenge is, young people don’t really care about secondhand stuff. Home goods and furniture have become more affordable and unfortunately disposable, increased pressure from marketing and social media to constantly update your home decor.
I went the route of yard sales-Facebook market place for larger or more niche items- buy nothing groups, leaving by the road with a ”free sign” -donation-and finally whatever was left…trash. How long that process takes is up to you, but there is a point where the effort outweighs the financial benefit of selling it. I did the bulk over about a 3 month period. I still need to do a round 2, but it’s at a much more manageable level now.
somekindofwonderful-@reddit
Thanks for the ideas!
No-Country6348@reddit
That’s going to be a problem when my in-laws die because they have a house full of beautiful antiques, but so do we and the only way we could take some of theirs as if we get rid of ours. The only other option of saving them is if any of the grandchildren are in a position to have their own houses and want some of the beautiful heirlooms themselves.

My husband died last summer; I moved. Now I am going through all the stuff the two of us kept stored. I am on my third load for Goodwill. I have trashed A LOT. I have 2 boxes sorted and packed to go elsewhere. I will be left with about 6 plastic totes packed with picture albums, memorabilia, and Christmas decorations. All labeled accordingly. My son will rise up and call me blessed someday.
Apprehensive-Ant2141@reddit
Most of my media is gone. Gave pretty much all of it away this past winter. I still have my record player and records. Now I move on to stuff like my grandmother’s 2 sets of China I got against my will.
ZealousidealGrab1827@reddit
Single dude here. I am in process of selling my house downsizing. The hardest part was getting started going through all crap I have collected. I ended up getting rid of half my clothes and shoes, cookware, extra bedding, paperwork from years ago —- just so much stuff I never used. Kept essential furniture to stage the house, but I would even throw that in with a buyer that wanted it. Otherwise, it will probably be donated.
I am just so DONE with non-essential stuff, and simplifying. Next place will be a smaller Condo or TownHome.

Currently cleaning out my dad's house, which was my grandparents's home for 70 years before my dad inherited it. It hold 80 years of accumulated crap, and it's an absolute nightmare. Thankfully, my mom and stepdad have already culled a ton of their stuff, so at least I won't have to do this twice. I will not do this to my kids.

I’m a younger GenX, still under 50, single Dad with a teenager at home. I’m starting to get rid of stuff that I don’t use. It was liberating to give away some tools that haven’t been used in over 10 years.
My 5 year plan is to downsize from a 4 bedroom house with a finished garage and a yard to a 2 bedroom condo with secure parking garage and a big pool. I’ll have one more move towards retirement after that!
I try to go through and organize and get rid of a box of stuff a week. Starting early makes me feel good :)
Grouchy_Vet@reddit
I have gotten rid of a lot of my own things but I kept the kids childhood books, dolls and a few outfits/shoes.
I need to downsize Christmas and Halloween but I’m really struggling with that. Every item reminds me of their childhood

I've moved alot over my life and have downsized my stuff significantly each time. So, I will be moving when I retire and plan to do one more MAJOR downsize of my household stuff. After that it will be the minimalist life for me.

A huge tote of pictures I inherited from my parents that I am still digitizing, a couple huge totes of CD's and a large Lego collection. My daughter is sentimental like me so she will keep the pictures, sort through the CD's and keep what she wants and she's excited about how much my Lego collection will be worth. Then we have all my husband's shit which fills a large building. All used for our business. If he dies before we sell the business, my 5 grandsons will each get a welder, a large toolbox, metal bending equipment, etc. There is a lot of shit. Lol
Fitz_2112b@reddit
I have a 20 yard dumpster being dropped off next week to do a full garage and basement clean out. Getting rid of ALL the crap.
No-Country6348@reddit
I have purged a ton of stuff, but I still have things that I plan to enjoy for the next maybe 30 years, so I don’t wanna get rid of everything.
I did make a list for my kids of what they should do when we die, who they should contact (our lawyer, real estate agent, banker, etc) and one of the things on the list was to have an estate person come and do a sale at our house once they’ve picked out all the things they want for themselves. That should make it easy.
Motorcycle1000@reddit
I'm strongly considering just getting rid of the house itself and just piling all my crap on the lot. The house just gets in the way with all those useless living areas.

Even after downsizing to a condo to retire in place a few years ago, I’m still collecting physical media since I don’t subscribe to any of the online streaming services. I’m single with no kids but lots of nieces and nephews. I’ve slowed down the collecting a bit since I retired last year but have been spending more time enjoying what I reaped over the years.

My blessing in diguise - 3 years ago our house burned down. 30 years of junk instantly gone. We had just decided to start the downsizing process. I was researching dumpsters, but was completely overwhelmed at the idea of cleaning out.
We were of course devastated, but eventually insurance gave us a big fat check, and we started over in that 2 bedroom apartment we were thinking about. It saved us from a year of garage sales.
Taminella_Grinderfal@reddit
While I’m so sorry that happened, I can also understand how you could find a small silver lining. When my mom passed and I had to clean out her house, there was definitely a nano-second where I thought…..maybe freak lightning will hit the fuel tank and I won’t have to deal with this.

I've been going hard at purging lately. I have very little that isn’t utilitarian. Other than my storage unit full of Beanie Babies, Cabbage Patch Kids, and Hummel figurines. Those are my retirement investments /s.
Seriously, all of the stuff that I have can be thrown out, apart from some silver bars that are worth some money.
LayerNo3634@reddit
The stuff in storage is worthless and no investment. Aunt had Hummels, some with appraisal papers from years ago. Worthless now. Nobody wants them.
AZJHawk@reddit
Yes. Hence the /s for sarcasm. All of those “collectibles” are garbage.
CanadianExiled@reddit
I don't have much except a decent book collection and every gaming console since the Sega Master. I have no kids so just left instructions on where to call to have those things hauled off to. Furniture and clothes will be donated. Hopefully I outlive the dog.
Taminella_Grinderfal@reddit
With the photos can I suggest labeling them and if there are any interesting stories attached….tell those stories. You might bore your kid for a bit, but there may come a time when you’re gone, that they’ll go through those photos and have the context. I just decluttered my mom’s photos along with some from my grandparents and it was a little sad because I didn’t know a lot of the people/circumstances. I felt bad throwing many away, but they held no real meaning for me.

We don’t really have all that much stuff. We have a small 2 bedroom house that our son will most likely inherit one day and he can just toss whatever he doesn’t want. We never really were the collecting type of people. We spend most of our money on travel and having fun and making memories. I’m am a bit of a hobby mechanic and do almost all the work on our cars so there will be some tools to deal with. Maybe someday I will get rid of them if there comes a time when I can’t crawl under a car anymore.

We downsized and got rid of almost everything. Gave the kids the heirlooms, and "started over." It was liberating and a breath of fresh air. If you're wanting to hang on to DVD's, books, CD's, etc. Remember: my mother still has 8 track tapes. Nobody wants them and it's a sure sign your old. Quit hanging onto the past. Keep your memories, and get rid of the stuff.

At 51, we're empty nesters and preparing to relocate after a layoff and job search. We've used this to declutter and pack up a lot. We still have plenty, but it's pretty incredible what all we were able to get rid of so far.

Hardback books and that's about it. I moved a couple of times over the last 5 years and downsized majorly each time. I purge relentlessly now.

I still have way too much. We have been going through stuff the last couple of weeks and have gotten rid of a fair amount so far. Still have a long way to go though. What I'm not ready to let go of yet but isn't in everyday use, I'm trying to limit to a set number of plastic storage bins, all labelled with an inventory in the top of each one. That way the kids will know what boxes they need to look through and what boxes they can just drop off at a thrift store without thinking twice.

I've moved across multiple states twice in the last 10 years so I've dejunked fairly well. I still have a miniature collection I adore that I'll keep around for a while but it's compact. I still have more than my share of craft and office supplies but the second these kids are done with school I'm keeping a ream of printer paper, a note book and a handful of pens/pencils. The rest is out. My biggest wall is denying my aging parents and aunts the pleasure of hoisting all their 'treasured' stuff back onto me. When I leave this location it's going to be with whatever I can fit in my car.
Aggravating_Piece232@reddit
My husband won't let me get rid of bakeware my mom bought for me on QVC because he thinks the kids might want it. He also won't get rid of his National Geographic Magazines and Life books. We also have more than 10 lamps and boxes full of wires plus appliances we're not using he wants to keep "for parts." Fortunately most of it is in his office or the storage area, so it's not in the way, but knowing it's there is sometimes stressful. After the experience I had with my mom, I want the kids to have clear directions on what they should do after I die - who to call, what to do with my body (leave it at the hospital), and most of my stuff cleaned out so they don't have to deal with it. I want them to have to think as little as possible.
groundhogcow@reddit
I will leave my kids some money and they can deal with any crap I kept.
I had to deal with my parents crap they can deal with mine. It is hardly the hardest part of a parent dying and I have spoon fed them enough.

Nothing, I've been a minimalist my whole life, thankfully my wife is the same way. I think it would a blessing if you sold the model horses yourself (assuming they are not on a display/play rotation). It would be very stressful for me to educate myself on someone else’s collection and try to get “fair” prices.

I am arranging things and plan to do a video to go over things and what my wishes are and then document it in my Trust. Main stuff is what I want him to do with the guns and my comics and precious metals. There will be some sentimental things to go to various people..otherwise i will let him know to yard sale the rest of it.
I have 1 more move in me to my (hopefully) final home and i will dumpster shit as i am moving.

I have a collection of music equipment, but my desire is that it all gets donated to kids who have interest in music, but their parents aren’t able to afford a quality instrument.
Other than that, firearms that my boys will inherit.

I might just forget to turn the gas off one day and start over from scratch.

Please tell that to my 80 year old parents. They just constructed a large storage building next to their house for all the new shit they buy and don't use.
I don't have children, so some lucky person will clean out the hundreds of art books and LPs I have.

Clothes in the attic, I need to donate. Everything else is just accumulated stuff I do not need.

Photos, Vitamix blender, gorilla costume, some tools, two bicycles, a modest amount of clothing (biz casual, hiking & athletic), laptop, printer & a car. A medium Uhaul would cover it all- except car.

One of my goals in life was to get really good at snowboarding while wearing a gorilla costume. Sadly I'll likely never achieve that goal.

When I turned 50 I spent months drastically downsizing. I only kept the basics and some extremely valuable artwork along with a few pieces of expensive antique furniture. My ethos is having everything be able to fit in a 10' moving pod.

I don't have kids. It will the the lawyers problem.
That being said I am actively cleaning out sheds. My wife and I go thou house hold items 2-3 times a year and purge things we don't use or no longer will use.

Wife and I 60, moving into smaller house. We just filled a second large dumpster to the brim. I own no records or CDs and keeping about 30 hardbacks only. We have very few knickknacks and update our photos on display. Getting rid of almost all furniture. Want to do sleek and modern. We joke that we want the house to look like a hotel room. Flat out told my 84 year old dad we want none of his stuff except a few photos.

Maybe you have but my parents are in their 80's and have a house full of shit to worry about first lol.

Ugh. We have like 4 sets of china that have been handed down to us

I never had kids so I took care of the issue from that end.
Before I die I'm going to hide the door lock code to my house in some remote corner of the Intertubes.

I've been trying for years to get my Boomer parents to downsize. My sole motivation is to not have to get rid or dumpster upon dumpster of crap when they die. They flat-out refuse to move.
Me? Yeah...I have too many clothes. Too many books. A couple of bins of CDs. And other stuff no one will want when I'm dead. But hopefully that's at least 20 years away.

I have a Betamax vcr and a big box of about 50 tapes. All boxed up an untouched for 30 plus years.

My daughter who is just graduating high school and still lives with us told me she does not understand why my wife is still dragging stuff into the house for the kids to take care of when she passes.
