Why bother if that’s an oil shortage, gas prices are gonna be absolutely insane and no one‘s gonna drive anyway
The20thKa-tet@reddit
My Supra won’t be happy. My EV6 won’t give a shit.
I can see the dealer ads now: Need an oil change? Trade in on an EV!

Per the article:
Which I didn't even know was a thing. My Mom has a Nissan Sentra which uses 0W-20 which I thought was insanely thin. Never had a Toyota nor hybrid so I didn't know they used thinner stuff. But makes sense I guess since the ICE doesn't run as regularly so the oil has less opportunity to get up to appropriate temps for heavier weight oils.

Your Bmw will be fine.

The biggest lesson in COVID was that a lot of "elastic" goods turned out to be inelastic and businesses could literally just cut production and triple the prices and roll with it.
And the second lesson we learned is that there is no such thing as the "free" market. Nobody is going to swoop in with supply to save the day. Every board of directors looks at a competitor running 50% the inventory with 300% the profit and immediately makes that their plan.

Time for dealers to charge $200 for an oil change and call it market adjustment.
04limited@reddit
Only for 0w8 and 0w16 oil. Afaik it’s only used in toyota hybrids.
whatdoido8383@reddit
Lots of normal gas Toyota's use 0w-16, my 21 regular gas Rav4 specs it with 0w-20 being the backup if 16 isn't available. I just run 0w-20 now as it sounds better\smoother on it.
04limited@reddit
Yup I forgot the newer 4 cyls use 16 weight. I kept thinking the v6 truck motor was the only gas motor they make right now.
Wrench78@reddit
The shortage to be is mostly going to effect 0-w16 and 0-w8. They also had issues with those in COVID times. Toyota has already released a bulletin saying to use 0-w20
gimpwiz@reddit
Which we knew all along to use, 0w8 is just wankery. Shaving off tiny bits of inefficiency by using damn near water as lubricant. Can't say the tradeoff sounds good. Every time there's a potential engine issue, they always say to use the heavier stuff anyways.

0W-0 when

They just give you a packet of additives you mix with distilled water

Time to hit up Costco and stock up on those 2X 5qt oil jugs while you can lol. We keep 4 jugs around for our oil changes. Buy them on sale, have on hand when the milage hits
SonnySwanson@reddit
I looked last time I was there and didn't find any 0w-8
squarebody8675@reddit
Ow8 😳
increasingrain@reddit
I don't think Costco goes below 0w-8. I have only seen 0w20-and 5w-30
Spicywolff@reddit
If you ask the manager at the desk, they might be able to find it for you and have it brought in.

God damn it!

Glad I bought an EV.

Stupid question—would this affect synthetics though? I don’t know much about how they make stuff like Mobil 1.
pdp10@reddit
The Pearl Gas-To-Liquids plant in Qatar, that produces synthetic lubricants from gas, was significantly affect by hostilities in March.
RevvCats@reddit
Car oil is a blend of different base oils
Group 1, 2, and 3 oils come from crude that’s been refined to different levels with group 3 being so highly refined that you can legally in the US call it synthetic.
Group 4 oils which are made of PAOs and are cooked up in a lab use ingredients that come from oil refined out of the ground. So even the “true synthetic” oil relies on crude.
Group 5 literally means everything else. So like group 4 there’s some group 5 oils that are cooked up in a lab that are synthetic but again require ingredients from the oil refining industry. If you filled your car with olive oil or whale oil that would technically be a group 5 oil.
Then there’s gas to liquid oil that’s made from natural gas and has become a popular component of engine oils because it’s behaves a lot like PAO while costing less. Guess who also supplies a major chunk of the global natural gas market?
TijY_@reddit
Lol, synthetics aren't even a thing,
Some oils have 5-20% actual "synthetic" oil. Rest is made from gas or oil.
pdp10@reddit
BITOGers feeling smug right now, I bet.
But it's true that the oils and lubricants part of POL is often not considered when it comes to reserves.

Mobil 1 has $10 rebates. $25 for 5 quarts at Walmart. $15 per bottle. I stocked up 4

There was a M1 promo going on for $10 back per 5 quart jug. Picked up the max number of M1 ESP 0w30, might pick up some ESP X4 0w40 just in case...
