Fast Food places killed the dollar menus after the 2008 financial crisis subsided because people finally figured out how much of a deal it actually was as opposed to the combos which are a ripoff
I'll never forget the sound of Ray Charles saying "5 Arby's roast beef sandwiches for only 5.55?!" "That's horsey sauce! *sniff* No wait, that's Arby's sauce!"
I don't remember candy bars being a dime but I do remember them being 47¢ and smaller candies being 10¢, 5¢, or 1¢. I used to go to the convenience store in my neighborhood with a dollar and come out with a pocketful of candy.
My grandmother was born in 1916 and I don't even know how many times I was about being able to go to the movies and getting popcorn and all-day entertainment for a nickel lmao.
We just lost the McDonald’s buy one get one for $1 menu too. It wasn’t the dollar menu, but I could at least get 2 double cheese for under $5 or 2 McChickens for under $4.
This one hurts the most for me. Always loved going to Taco Bell and getting me a ton of food on the cheap. Now a hard or soft shell costs you over $2.00 and a specialty taco runs you over $6. Not worth it for the amount you're getting.
I used to live off $1 Whoppers, Famous Stars, Jack-in-Box tacos, and Jumbo Jacks in highschool. Gas was cheap so it was cheaper to drive with friends to a nearby fast food restaurant than buy cafeteria food. I would order two burgers and a water for $2.15 after tax. Apparently, my body was better at managing cholesterol as a teenager.
I remember having basement gaming parties with my friends and we’d hit Taco Bell to get food for everyone. We’d have a garbage bag size of tacos and burritos for like $15.
Rotisserie chicken, hot dogs and pizza, god bless Costco.
I'm still not over the fact that they got rid of combination pizza, because people tried to customize it.
Yeah I guess I remembered it earlier. But you are right when I look it up. However, looking at the normal price of a foot long mid 90s I get back $4.69... so pretty close.
As an often broke 18 year old that had moved out of my house, the Burger King 99 cent menu bought with change from under couch cushions was a lifesaver.
Remember when you hit that pedestrian with your car at the crosswalk and then just drove away? Pepperidge Farm remembers. But Pepperidge Farm ain't just gonna keep it to Pepperidge Farm's self free of charge. Maybe you'll go out and buy yourself some of these distinctive Milano cookies, maybe this whole thing just disappears.
I’d go to the mall and there was a CVS that sold off-brand cans of soda for 25¢ or 35¢, something really cheap. Now 20 oz bottles are $2 or more. Candy bars were 50¢, gum was 25-50¢. It was all so much less expensive.
Hungry Howie’s! I remember going there all the time. The location where I grew up closed many years ago, but I hear they are still around in some areas

I'm Canadian. I was always amazed how low the sticker prices were in the US in the 90s, 00s, and early 10s.
Even at the worst of our exchange rate, it was a much better value.
Even in pricier areas like NYC, LA were cheap. Now.. forget it.

However, $5 in the mid 90s is about $11 now. So it isn't like the prices at Subway are crazy out of line with our $5 footlong.

$5 footings from Subway occurred from 2008 to 2014. $5 in 2008 is less then $8 now.
