What do you think about the Air New Zealand Economy Sleeping Pods Idea called "Skynet"?

sphericalduck@reddit
I would absolutely pay $495 for 4 hours in one of these. I like sleep and I can't afford business class. Trying to sleep sitting up is so miserable
EarlDukePROD@reddit
becomes significantly less miserable on a350s and b787s due to the lower cabin altitude. was able to comfortably sleep 6hrs on a 12hr flight in the a350 in economy and was pleasantly surprised since i usually dont fare well sleeping in moving things. didnt even have much jetlag either. pretty nice
jpesky66@reddit
“Skynest”, not Skynet. They are a little different! Lol. I know it says economy, but I wonder if I would even be able to afford it.
-Sokobanz-@reddit
Thats what been called Platzcard ( ger.) a 3rd class long destination sleeper train.
Tokyo885_@reddit
I think its a good idea for flights. Let people sleep honestly
YeOldeDogo@reddit
Honestly, I love this, even if it’s just for four hours. Being able to lie flat for sleep is my main barrier to long haul flights. I like how Air New Zealand keeps trying new things.
Fun-Weakness-8644@reddit
Preferable to the freaking standing seats. Assuming they long enough for me I’m keen.
the_silent_redditor@reddit
Likewise.
I fly UK-Aus/NZ and back frequently.
Business is now prohibitively expensive. I don’t know who can afford to routinely drop 5 figures on a flight. Post-COVID the prices have skyrocketed and not returned to what they were.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve made the journey, and each time is exponentially worse. It’s a logarithmic scale.
If I can get 4 hours lying down and actually sleeping during a 24+ hour journey, it genuinely makes a difference. $500 NZD is, of course, still fucking obscene to pay for a mere four hours of probably interrupted sleep in a definitely-not-properly-cleaned rack.. but, fuck it, the trials and tribulations of frequent economy ULH flying have brought us here.
Legitimate_Night_618@reddit
If i may ask, what kind of work do you do that you frequently travel this route?
magmagon@reddit
Thee airline makes the most money per sq ft of cabin space on prem economy, then business, then first, then way less on economy.
That coupled with people spending whatever it takes to travel and the general increase in disposable income means airlines will meet that premium demand first.
Nudexor@reddit
That’s where I land too. It doesn’t need to be luxury, it just needs to let your spine remember it’s a spine for a few hours on a long haul flight.
olalof@reddit
No that's where you fly. When you land you need to get up.
GonZonian@reddit
Yeah weird choice of words by OP, doesn't really fly with me.
redcremesoda@reddit
It’s great to see airlines offer something innovative, and I hope Skynest works out for Air NZ. For me personally, the single 4-hour time block isn’t long enough to guarantee any sort of rest, especially if I don’t know when precisely I will feel like sleeping. I’d hate the feeling of moving from the pod to back to my cramped economy seat. I’m also not sure I would be able to relax in the pod knowing my time is limited.
Given the likely high cost of this I’d prefer to get comfortable in my economy seat and just stay there— or maybe book premium economy instead.
I don’t really want a four hour chunk of time in a shared bed.
Hefty-Restaurant4767@reddit
I agree, 4 hours is too short. Even 6 hours would make it worth it. If you pop a valium 20 mins before your alloted time you'd get a nice 6 hour sleep and you'd feel rested after.
But I'd feel worse after 3/4 hours, especially if I took something to help me sleep.
EarlDukePROD@reddit
might work for you but i think what they bank on is that people get one full rem phase of sleep, which, for most people, sits around 4hrs. ever come home from a night out and only get half of your usual sleep, yet you feel alright? same thing.
comalley0130@reddit
Curious why they don’t just do an hourly rental. Set a minimum of X number of hours, then let folks add on as they wish. It’d be great to reserve 4 or 6 hours when I know I’ll be most tired on the flight.
redcremesoda@reddit
I wondered the same. My guess is they want people coming and going at the same intervals to reduce interruptions and make cleaning easier. Not to mention if someone books 5-6 hours, they might be left with 2-3 slots where the bunks are empty.
NYC to Auckland is 17 hour and 40 minutes. Since they said the bunks will be available outside meal times, my guess is they want each bunk booked for three (or maybe even four) 4-hours slots. My guess is three slots because that allows for deviations in flight time, take-off/landing, meals, etc, plus a buffer to get the cattle out before the next herd comes.
TheyCallMeSuperChunk@reddit
That's what melatonin shots are for. I recommend trying this brand](https://usa.drinkdreamwater.com/products/sleep-shot-12-pack?srsltid=AfmBOopQ__TXFCNngqb_3P2x5ewCF1DRSecUBxSjabG3rqKl7UOYtJP0) is available at most US airports at the newsstand, and works pretty well for me. And if you try it and like it, you can buy it in powder form off the airport and it's even easier/cheaper/more convenient
t-poke@reddit
I think it really depends on the time of day.
If the flight leaves late at night, I could probably get 3 and a half of solid sleep in one of these which is 3 and a half more than I'll get in an economy seat.
If my four hour block is during the daytime, I'm not getting shit for sleep.
I was in biz class on SIN-SFO. Got a full night's sleep in my hotel, flight left in the morning, and I got no sleep at all. By the time my biological clock was ready to sleep, we were landing in SFO. And then I was completely miserable in my economy seat on my connecting flight to STL.
BoringBob84@reddit
If you can afford this bunk bed, then you are probably already in a first or business class seat.
Hefty-Restaurant4767@reddit
From a quick Google search it says 495NZD for the 4 hours, which is around 295USD.
To upgrade to business class for a long haul flight, you're talking several thousand $$$
I_like_cake_7@reddit
I think it’s a cool idea but I think the 4 hour time block is too short.
Also, what are they going to do if somebody gets into one of the bunks and either won’t wake up or refuses to get up after their 4 hours is up?
Stoney3K@reddit
With these "stacked" configurations I can't help but wonder if they would even hold up in evacuation testing. The same goes for those double-decker economy seats.
And I can't imagine an airline sacrificing an entire row of seats as dead space to have the passengers board in seats and then allow them to move over to a sleeping bunk.
Sure it works in trains or buses but that doesn't mean it would work in aircraft.
deltajvliet@reddit
As far as evacuation, you sort of covered it - it wouldn't be occupied for takeoff or landing, so egress certification essentially remains unchanged. As far as economics, they must think it's worth trying. Roughly how many seats do those six bunks equate to? And what's the passenger charge to have the real estate of a seat plus that?
Stoney3K@reddit
And compare that to the price of a business class seat opposed to... whatever the hell this is.
I doubt it will be more economic as a passenger to book one of these, and more economic for the airline to exploit them instead of a few more business class rows.
Mountain_Builder6146@reddit
They're charging $495 NZD (about $300 USD) for a four hour session. Assume on a 13-14 hour flight they can get 3 full rounds in, that's an additional $5,400 USD in revenue on top of everyone's ticket prices. Pretty brilliant for ANZ.
contactdeparture@reddit
2 rounds. Nobody 60/90 minutes or last 60/90 minutes and an hour in between for cleaning/turnover.
Stoney3K@reddit
You're disregarding the fact that these take up at least 2 blocks of 3 or 4 seats which they can't sell. So that's going to cut into that $5400 of extra revenue.
On a business class flight I may pay $800-1000 more, but it means I get better meals, improved service, and a bed that I can use for the entire flight.
Bob_12_Pack@reddit
More than what?
Stoney3K@reddit
More than economy. That's still a larger total revenue than an economy seat + $495 for 4 hours of bunking.
And if I wanted a longer time slot a business class seat would quickly be a lot cheaper and more convenient.
Mountain_Builder6146@reddit
A quick look at Air New Zealand's website for NYC-Auckland (where this product is launching) shows economy seats going for about $1,500 and business seats going for over $8,000.
I don't think "would quickly be a lot cheaper" applies here.
Bob_12_Pack@reddit
I travel from the US to Australia occasionally, I would gladly pay $800-1000 more for business class, but it's more like $6k+ more than economy.
t-poke@reddit
I was gonna say, where in the hell is a lie flat biz seat only $800 more than economy?
Try adding a 0 to that.
Mountain_Builder6146@reddit
Right, but they don't have to sell these pre-flight as if it were a normal seat. Additionally, it's revenue for them with zero additional pax weight on the aircraft, which matters on their ultra long haul routes.
IntelligentRisk@reddit
discount for top bunk? I good proportion of people (older, richer) could not get up there.
BoringBob84@reddit
Is it, though? That looks like enough space for at least 6 more seats. I think that this idea would be brilliant if that space was occupied by seats at takeoff and landing and then somehow converted into bunk beds during cruise.
peepay@reddit
They would get the same - or more - with two business class seats.
MerryJanne@reddit
So when a sudden turbulence hits, these people just.. strap into their beds? expected to navigate to their seats to seatbelt in?
Badrear@reddit
There are probably belts of some kind, but realistically there’s not much room to go anywhere. There isn’t even room to sit up, so getting thrown into what’s above you isn’t as big of a deal. It would be much safer to be unbelted in these than unbelted anywhere else in the plane.
deltajvliet@reddit
Sleeping berths have existed on airplanes for a century, and these aren't altogether different from a fully reclined lie-flat 🤷♂️ So, yeah, they presumably have a seat belt in each bed that in an ideal world is always fastened.
AdriftSpaceman@reddit
It doesn't remain unchanged, does it? The thing is an obstacle.
deltajvliet@reddit
It's no different than if they stuck a few lava right there 🤷♂️
Longjumping_College@reddit
Im pretty sure i was reading you buy like a 3-4 hour chunk after takeoff, and then you're out and it's someone elses.
SpatulaWholesale@reddit
Yes, the cabin crew cleans the bunk between uses, so yay... now cabin crew are also hotel maids.
It's a neat idea, but 4 hours is way too short to get any meaningful sleep. It would probably take me an hour just to be relaxed enough to have a hope of dozing off. You can buy two slots, at twice the price, of course.
quid_pro_kourage@reddit
My gf with chronic fatigue will disagree
R4G@reddit
>cabin crew are also hotel maids
Always have been, who do you think cleans the bathrooms inflight?

viktoryf95@reddit
On European and US carriers, nobody.
Badrear@reddit
I worked for a U.S. airline and one time a plane came in and I got called to clean the lav. The FA was almost in tears saying how it was so disgusting and that she’d blocked access to it since it was reported. I was trying to decide if I should quit or not, but decided to take a look before making a decision. When I opened the door, I looked in and saw what looked like a Milk Dud or Tootsie Roll on the edge or the seat. That was it. I just wiped it into the toilet, grabbed the disinfectant spray and a couple paper towels from the galley, wiped it down and called it good. Our FAs didn’t do a damn thing when it came to cleaning unless someone left trash directly on the seat. If it was on the floor or in the seat back pocket, they didn’t touch it.
AlwaysNeedAssistance@reddit
THIS ☝️. Same here - and same result.
(For the actual “bad” ones ) I used to work in Vegas for a bit of time and during the summer it was the worst. When it was both top & bottom bodily fluids the call over the radio was “I’ve got a Doublemint gum call” (double your pleasure double your fun) slogan

4 hours is too short for meaningful sleep? You've clearly never had kids lol.
RamaShakle@reddit
I’d definitely take a third of a trans-pac flight being completely horizontal!
peepay@reddit
In business and first class, they already make the beds...
foodcooker@reddit
On submarines they call that "hot racking". You get into your bunk and its still warm cuz someone was just sleeping there
DimensionMediocre439@reddit

XPav@reddit

MerryJanne@reddit
I'm sure it will get just as thorough a cleaning as the rest of the plane between passengers. Which is to say, not much. Mayyybe a 'new' blanket that was used on the last flight, and put into a new plastic bag.
MondayNightRawr@reddit
Same thought. I don’t see these getting through any type of certification process
t-poke@reddit
Is certification necessary if they're not used during take off and landing? No one's evacuating a plane at cruising altitude.
MondayNightRawr@reddit
Everything needs to be certified in aviation, even things you think that wouldn’t matter. But, it appears it’s already selling.
sphericalduck@reddit
Clearly they did.
MondayNightRawr@reddit
I didn’t think this was real. My bad.
sphericalduck@reddit
I think the word "idea" in the post title threw a lot of people off.
kiwiinNY@reddit
Lol. Of course it will be certified.
christopher_mtrl@reddit
It's starting sales this week.
SongBirdplace@reddit
They are like navy style coffin racks right down to the 3-ish foot spacing between. You can get out fairly quickly with practice.
kiwiinNY@reddit
People won't be in there at the time of an evacuation lol
djdsf@reddit
You gotta pay for this and you only have a small amount of time allocated, you're not spending your whole flight there
Mountain_Builder6146@reddit
I think you're missing the fact that they're already selling this. It's happening.
yesitsmenotyou@reddit
They’ll probably have to be empty for takeoff and landing, planned emergency landings….no one is evacuating out of these things.
agha0013@reddit
With solid panels on the aisle side, I'd probably be ok with this, but it gets a bit narrow at the feet and I suspect my restless legs would probably have issues with it.
have kinda wanted something like a flat bed for a full flight though, and not needing the full seat/bed function of a premium class seat, just little capsule hotel style pods everywhere would be great, so long as you don't also need a seat for takeoff and landing.
Komplexkonjugiert@reddit (OP)
Its just for 4 hours per flight tho... And very expensive
stickinrink@reddit
You’re already paying a premium for this service. At that point, might as well go all the way for business class.
agha0013@reddit
which then makes zero sense.
so you need a seat and you can pay extra to go stretch out a bit, which takes a lot of space and adds weight to the plane so all the prices have to go up to make it worth while.
Just give me a long haul plane that's all bunk beds or something...
Their previous new product was the economy seats that turn into a short bed, can fit an adult and child but takes three seats so you need three seats for two passengers. still more expensive but probably a lot less so than this.
If safety is the issue just make the whole pod a nice foam rubber capsule and I'll bounce around safely
Mountain_Builder6146@reddit
$300 for four hours of stretched out time on a 13 hour flight sounds like a decent arrangement to me (depending on what you've already sunk into the ticket)
peepay@reddit
For me every cent counts and if I saved up enough for a vacation somewhere far, I will not have the budget to spend extra on this, sadly.
cguess@reddit
If I was flying for a client I'd just make them pitch in for this "$300 to have me show up fresher and ready for work". Otherwise I usually demand business class for a flight over 8 hours if the travels for a client, and this is a lot cheaper than that.
OrdinaryAncient3573@reddit
I'd never buy this up front. But halfway through a long-haul flight? I'd be googling what the secondhand-kidney market is like at my destination...
thesliperyfish@reddit
they can't do this is because you need to be able to evacuate quickly this is the reason they make you put your seat and tray table up on takeoff and landing. because if the engine explodes on landing, you need to be able to get out of the plane quickly before you burn to death.
BoringBob84@reddit
That happens on takeoff. 😉
No-Kaleidoscope-4525@reddit
Problem with most things in aviation is getting things certified. Boatload of costs and painful process. The classic seat works and satisfies standards we've never heard of. In times like these it gives airlines and manufacturers little incentive to come up with a new type of 'seating' like this.
conspicuousmatchcut@reddit
What’s the cost? I didn’t see it on the link
SpatulaWholesale@reddit
And the brat sitting in the seat next to you totally won't mess with your stuff while you're away.
IcyTable6584@reddit
This would be awesome….like a Tokyo capsule hotel on the plane. Maybe 3-4 tiers…just replace all seats with it. Carry on bags might be a challenge but I’d gladly give those up for being able to lie down during a long haul flight.
But I believe there may be restrictions around emergency evacuation procedures which would make this idea a non starter
GregMilkedJack@reddit
Looks super uncomfortable but I like the idea for overnight flights.
otherwisepandemonium@reddit
I have had one opportunity to fly first class to Europe and I struggled to sleep even a few minutes in the lay flat. I was surprised, but I just couldn't get comfortable. I got off the plane the exact same way I always do, jet lagged with no sleep and feeling like crap. Maybe my back felt a little better though lol
BananaCannon2@reddit
I'm tall enough, length of the lay flat seats is a practical concern (also being a stomach sleeper doesn't help). I've never tried one though because of the price. Premium economy though is great - just like sleeping in my la-z-boy at home.
Ataneruo@reddit
I once got to fly west coast to east coast on a redeye in business class and I also couldn’t sleep lying flat, which surprised me. At least I got a complimentary beverage.
peepay@reddit
West coast and east coast of what?
Ataneruo@reddit
USA, thanks for the clarifying question. My post will be updated.

d542east@reddit
It's not for everyone, but benzodiazepines plus the eye mask / pillow that straps to the head rest have changed the long haul flight game for me. Never was able to rest on flights before.
Equivalent-Cicada165@reddit
I'd be afraid to take my sleeping pills because I'd worry about a potential emergency

pup5581@reddit
It looks better than a cattle calss seat for someone with bad back issues. Anytime I can lay flat..on a plane? Yes
GregMilkedJack@reddit
Yeah, but it looks like it's made for people who are 5'7" and 120 pounds lol. I can't imagine anyone who isn't short and thin being able to possibly get comfortable in that.
pup5581@reddit
Yeah true. I am 6'1 so it may not fit me. if these were 4-5 inches longer I think i'd be good
troglodyte@reddit
I mean, it's closer to my ideal, but still not there. I understand the evacuation concerns but my dream is a takeoff to landing rack like this for at least part of the plane. The fact that it's four hours significantly impairs the value for me, though I'd still probably check it out.

flowerpanes@reddit
Safety question-how do they keep passengers safe during turbulence in there?
kiwiinNY@reddit
Seat belts, Just like in first and business class. Duh.
flowerpanes@reddit
The difference being (to me) that unlike a reclining seat where you are in a relatively small space so less likely to be twisted around while you sleep, these spaces would encourage a more natural sleep on your side, etc. Cannot quite imagine getting actual sleep with a belt on in those circumstances.
kiwiinNY@reddit
So same as business class.
flowerpanes@reddit
I dunno, I spend the vast majority of my flying time on De Haviland Dash-8 400 turboprops where there is nothing but sardine class. But being a restless sleeper at the best of times, I rarely attempt sleep even on the longer haul flights. Trying to sleep with a seat belt on is like wearing a straight jacket to me. The ultra first class lay flat beds would be wasted on me.
alt-cynic@reddit
Their business class product is still rubbish. When is Air NZ going to cede all to JFK to Qantas whom have a superior and much older product. Air New Zealand have truly lost the plot. This is another failure in a long line of failures. Skycouch anyone?
kiwiinNY@reddit
What a moaner lol.
Hardly lost the plot. Their service is still awesome.
alt-cynic@reddit
Still a crap product. Are you going to apologise for Air NZ when they can't handle competition vs QF. Let me guess you're an Air NZ flight attendant ?
kiwiinNY@reddit
Lol. Just because you don't want to use it doesnt make it crap.
Let me guess you're a boomer.
They can easily compete with QF.
alt-cynic@reddit
Hey, name calling isn't necessary. I'm certainly not a boomer, probably closer to your age.
Air NZ have a crap hard product, the new business class is a huge disappointment, the Qantas product is superior, QF will put the A350 on this route, that's an amazing product, way better than the 787 product.
No Air NZ cannot compete with the QF 787 product, my guess is Air NZ get a red face and pull out of this route.
You are definitely an Air NZ flight attendant aren't you!?
