They use beagles because they're small and gentle (i.e., don't take up much space and don't fight back when they're tortured). It's sick. We've had two beagles and I learned about it when we were in the adoption process for our first.

Its the price of many medical advancements. Either we decide its OK to use human for trials and kill/discard them when things inevitably go wrong or we use animals or we just stop making medicine.

Those are the choices.

This is harder to accept because we like dogs and beagles are cute...but anyone who still eats meat literally kills animals on a regular basis purely because they enjoy the taste of meat, which is a far greater sin than using animals for medical research.

We just don't like cute animals dying, we're generally ok with uglier ones dying.

I eat meat from deer I hunt and chickens I raise. They live a normal life and have one bad day.

Keeping animals in cages for research is far worse IMO.

Most chickens in this country are raised in barns where they have less than 1 sq foot per chicken, 10k+ birds to a single barn.

Your particular situation is obviously better, but your situation is fairly unique. The vast majority of people go to walmart and buy the packaged meat and don't think about (or care) where it comes from and how the animals are treated.

No, I agree. Factory farming is awful. I've made a conscious choice to switch my sourcing for meat as a result. And it's not feasible for everyone to hunt and/or raise their own.

And I freely admit that there are logical holes in my position about animal testing. I'm biased as a dog lover

Yes, I think animal education should be something kids see in school. IF you don't care, fine, its your choice, but kids should be at least educated about where their meat comes from and how the animals are treated.

I have zero issues if an animal is used for food, as long as it is given a relatively comfortable life. They get to exchange food and safety for being used for food, which is better than most wild animals end up with.

I have two dogs myself and I do hate the thought of animals being used for testing, even if it does provide us new medicines and surgery practices, it does feel wrong to prioritize our lives over their lives....idk, Im mixed on it.

As someone who's worked for scientists in Madison, it's weird to me how people pick and choose which animals are cute enough to save. I think one of the people i worked with said it has to do with the ratio of eye size to head size. Animals where the eyes are proportional to the head in ways that are similar to humans are too cute for research. Animals with bigger eyes (fish, insects, etc) - research the hell out of them and no one cares.
