What’s the most underrated place you’ve visited in the UK?

I’ll probably get judged for this but I really liked Swansea. Lovely coastline nearby, relaxed atmosphere and some genuinely beautiful spots once you get outside the centre.
Gloomy_Custard_3914@reddit
I'm not sure if it's under rated but it's definitely overhated, I actually quite like Birmingham
Ralucahippie@reddit
If you can catch a tour of the Jewellery Quarter museum, that's really worth it
Ralucahippie@reddit
Stoke on Trent has a good history museum if you're into Anglo Saxon history - which you should be, it's pure Game of Thrones. Also the Wedgwood museum is really great if you want to look at pretty ceramics.
Rooky030@reddit
Sheffield. I went there for university expecting a grim, post industrial wasteland. I was completely wrong.
McFizzleKicks@reddit
It’s a brilliant city. I was at uni there 98-02 and hung around for a while after. Went to visit last year and was pleased to note that weed can be smelled almost everywhere..
Weary-Carob3896@reddit
I used to love going to see my friwnds there when they were in Uni. Crookes is a nice spot.
Jlaw118@reddit
Went to my first gig at Leadmill and always has a place in my heart for that.
I haven’t been to Sheffield for a couple of years now but worked around there for a while, the investment they’re putting in to the centre though is phenomenal
kylehyde84@reddit
When were you there? I went in 2002 and a lot of it was pretty much that. But I had the time of my life and don't regret it one bit.
EldritchSanta@reddit
I feel it's a great city to live in, but not such a good city to visit
Sad-Nectarine-7855@reddit
Yes actually quite pleasant in places
BobBobBobBobBobDave@reddit
Bits of the centre are really gorgeous.
Nayythan94@reddit
cotswolds me and my girlfriend went there for week it was so beautiful we went in winter and it snowed it should be even better now in summer you could go out for walks it's beautiful
Vaxtez@reddit
I don't find the cotswolds that pretty myself. Maybe it's because i've spent most my life around them, so the beauty has worn off, but I just don't find the Cotswold Hills to 'wow' me in the same way that the Wye Valley does.
Whulad@reddit
Cotswolds are internationally known and chock full of tourists lol
Nayythan94@reddit
yeah but you are in england you can't walk anywhere without seeing a tourist. when we went we spoke to a couple people but their were more english people there than tourists alot of old people aswell cause they live there and its every quiet
Whulad@reddit
If you don’t think the Cotswolds is one of the most famous tourist destinations in England you don’t have much knowledge of English tourism!
-captainjapseye@reddit
Mate the Cotswolds is famously tourist heavy and arguably the main spot for international tourists outside of London.
Sad-Nectarine-7855@reddit
Hardly underrated. Also cotswolds is vauge, if you say Cam & Dursley, technically cotswolds but an absolute shithole, compared to the usual Bourton on the water or castle combe
Camerthom96@reddit
I feel like the Cotswolds are famously pretty nice.

Yeah, gorgeous place.
Apprehensive_Ring666@reddit
Whitby. Rarely see it mentioned outside of Yorkshire, but it has a very unique charm.
visual-appearance69@reddit
I think Whitby is mentioned a lot outside of Yorkshire…
Organic-Network7556@reddit
I never heard of it until I moved up north.
Federal-Mortgage7490@reddit
Think in the last 10 years it seems to have gone from a regional gem to national gem.
Adventurous-Dog-3786@reddit
It is !
YragNitram1956@reddit
Whitby is a premier historical destination because it seamlessly blends medieval, maritime, and literary history, offering iconic sites like the clifftop Abbey ruins, a rich Captain Cook legacy, and gothic, Dracula-inspired charm. It provides a unique experience of 7th-century religious history, 18th-century exploration, and 19th-century atmospheric tales. And is famous for its jet a black gemstone.

Love Whitby, and Robin Hood’s Bay too
EducationalWeek885@reddit
I am from the South and it's literally one of the first places mentioned when people a recommending places to visit!
subbiedavie@reddit
I did know a bit about it but was not disappointed. So many interesting facets.
Throwaway91847817@reddit
Id hardly call Whitby underrated. Its pretty popular and well known for Dracula, Goths and James Cook.

Went as a lod and didnt appreciate it much then, but having been as an adult, I feel like it doesnt get the praise it deserves.

Had alot of money thrown at it recently?

Hull
I heard it was the poorest, worst place in the country... So I went..
It has it's issues, sure, but it has a beautiful river front, a great and compact city centre, the Humber bridge nearby, it's not far from the seaside, there's little villages and towns around like Berevley / Brigg / Barton.l that all offer different activities and feels.
I loved it so much that I moved there the year it was city of culture.
And now I don't live there and I miss it a lot.
maisydee@reddit
I moved to Hull in 1980 straight from school. Got a job and a big, but crappy, flat in the avenues (£16 a week inc bills) it was always being slagged off even then but it was a great place and I eventually went to uni. Left in the late 80s but have been back for a time, now and again. Still a great place.
ForeignSleet@reddit
I live in York so not far from hull and honestly it’s nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be
Grimsby on the other hand… /s
Jlaw118@reddit
I used to do a regular route around both Hull and Grimsby for a while and honestly don’t get why people downplay them both as much as they do.
Everywhere has their rough areas, but on the front both seem like really nice, well kept places. And I love how quiet the roads are compared to major cities.
York is equally as stunning but I’ve honestly delivered to some really rough places around there as well that would put people off the entirety of York if they ever set foot around those areas 😂
SowwieWhopper@reddit
I’ve had some good nights out in Grimsby tbf 🤷🏻♂️
No_transistory@reddit
Same. Moved there just before city of culture. Absolutely loved it. I've since moved away to be closer to family in what is a more desirable place to live, but my days in Hull were probably some of my happiest. Lovely city.
maisydee@reddit
The Outer Hebrides, to be honest I knew nothing about it, Spent a month there and would seriously like to move there …
weaselbeef@reddit
Northumberland. Just spectacular coastline from start to finish.
de-tree-fiddy@reddit
Everyone knows that, how is it underrated
weaselbeef@reddit
Lots of folks down south have no idea.
roskopeek@reddit
Canterbury, Kent. Doesn't get the credit it deserves.
mrhippoj@reddit
Of places in Kent I would say Rochester. I think being part of Medway makes people skip over it and assume it's too rough, but the town centre is really pretty.
Choice-Lemon4500@reddit
The town centre is really pretty, but it is definitely nicer during the day. I felt the vibe change in the evening.
angel_delight13@reddit
Just dont go to Rochester at night!
Sad-Nectarine-7855@reddit
Also see Deal. Charming place
theother64@reddit
I thought that was highly recommended?
Like a southern version of York.
roskopeek@reddit
I mean its on the map more than a lot of small towns that'll get a mention, of course (largely thanks to the cathedral) - everybody knows it's there. But amongst the cities of the country its a little more under the radar in terms of just how brilliant it is. In my opinion anyway.
Could probably do with a decent football team to help its PR!

Doncaster. Never had a bad time over the last 5 years I've been visiting.
But every time I mention going, people are always confused or turn up their noses like "Why did you go to Doncaster?".
Honestly, just needs given a chance and a boosted profile. Even just having a walk around looking at all the high quality modern art in the streets is worth going for a day.
No_transistory@reddit
What would you recommend to do when visiting? I'll admit I have a poor view of Doncaster, but I haven't been since 2014. It was fun for me in the mid 00's. Mostly for gigs at Venues like The Leopard. Other memories of Doncaster aren't ones of fondness. I remember it as having a bland high street as it was dominated by French gate and had very few independents. A lot of people were quite aggressive. It felt like everyone was out for a confrontation, especially on nights out. My world view has changed somewhat so I'd like to give it another chance.
OverTheCandlestik@reddit
Hull.
Now hold on it is a bit rough around the edges but there are loads of hidden gems, especially the Avenues.
CroslandHill@reddit
I think the street art is the best reason to visit.
No_transistory@reddit
It's the food for me. So many great small independent venues.
kylehyde84@reddit
This is a Scunthorpe free zone
de-tree-fiddy@reddit
Probably Stockport.
SocietyPleasant7461@reddit
Lincoln is criminally underrated.
subbiedavie@reddit
Yup, lovely place. Amazing cathedral, castle and mix of old and new.
Stefgrep66@reddit
My local city, Uphill is really pretty. Myself and the wife dropped my grandson at the hospital a couple of weeks ago and had a walk and a drink, while we waited. Its beautiful around the castle and cathedral

Birmingham is very underrated. It’s a pretty fun city in my experience, but it gets absolutely slated.
DDAAVVEE123@reddit
Went for the first time last December for a gig. Agree, it was great. Xmas Markets are way better than the Manchester ones and the city centre itself was really nice. It doesn't help that it's a terrible looking city on the drive in but once you're in the centre it's decent.
CrossCityLine@reddit
Biggest Christmas market in the world outside of Germany. It brings in something like 1.5 million tourists every single week while it’s on.
Us locals give it a bad rap, but honestly town is an ace place to be when it’s on. Just happy people having a nice time. The bonus is that it makes all the other pubs away from the market much quieter 😉
Brum is a criminally underrated place in general tbh, but I don’t mind the bad rep it has online. Keeps pricks out and house prices reasonable.
DDAAVVEE123@reddit
The pubs were packed when I was there, was a Friday night though.
CrossCityLine@reddit
Imagine what they’re like when the market isn’t on.
OkScholar5964@reddit

Rutland
Lynvor@reddit
I lived in Stoke for 3 years and I didn't personally have any complaints other than it just being distant from B'ham and Manchester.
JimmyBallocks@reddit
I lived in and around Swansea for about five years in the nineties. I loved it. If you like surfing, rock climbing, mountain biking, coastal walks, incredible beaches and occasionally getting started on in pubs for having an English accent it’s perfect.
Psittacula2@reddit
The place that will remain underrated and for good reason!
theartofnocode@reddit
Carlisle
sophiemoores@reddit
Denbigh Moores. Seeing snowdonia mountain range in the background on a nice day is beautiful.
thecurtehs@reddit
Formby Beach, even people nearby haven't heard of it or been there but it's the nicest and cleanest beach in the north imo.
Dr_Havotnicus@reddit
My grandma used to live in Formby. We used to go to the beach a lot when we visited, and try to spot red squirrels in the nature reserve. Ah, happy memories! 🥹
drpewf@reddit
People nearby have not heard of it? What have you been smoking.
thecurtehs@reddit
I say nearby, I am about 30 miles away and a lot of my friends have never heard of it. I've been going since I was a kid but seems like a lot of people just default to Blackpool / Cleavleys
BuncleCar@reddit
I live in Cardiff and lived in Swansea years ago. Swansea, especially with Mumbles and the Gower, is lovely :))
Cardiff has it's great points too, especially the countryside nearby, but that's true for most places in the UK :))

The beaches around millom

i have not been to many places but underrated probably Brixham, its surrounded by clean beaches/ coves and it felt slow and relaxed compared to most uk places
that or Folkstone, but again both times i visited it was sunny and you could swim, probably in the winter it would be grim
fenaith@reddit
Sgwd Ddwli - it's a waterfall on the Nedd Fechan river in South Wales.
But all the tourists and influencers go to Sgwd yr Eira, which is the next valley over.
cowboysted@reddit
I adored Cardiff when I went. It was a very sunny day which may have contributed.
theother64@reddit
Well you've had the one nice day of weather they get in 10 years. So go again some point after 2030.
