I am standing in my backyard in the pitch black waiting for a thunderstorm to come. Hoping it scares my cats in for the night.

I don’t know if it gets much more GenX than this. I remember my family standing in the street watching a storm come at us. Enjoying the wind and the thunder and the lightning. Just waiting for the rain to drive us inside, and sometimes that didn’t even work. I love a thunderstorm. How about y’all?
P.S. I live in the PNW. So we’re not talking tornado watching or anything like that.

I am in the south but grew up in the Deep South and when a tornado was coming, my dad would get on the front porch and watch the sky and watch it roll in. We had a few big ones but one hit during the night and I remember all the neighbors coming over in the middle of the night and we were in our hallway with all the neighborhood kids. The parents were all out on the front porch. Tornadoes still scare the crap out of me. We had one go over our house about 10 years ago and my husband had his dumb ass on our front porch watching it while I was in the laundry room with our 3 small kids and dog. We lucked out but a lot of people didn't. I love a good thunderstorm though!

We’d go stand on our open front porch and enjoy the wind and rain! It was so much fun. It was our dad’s way of teaching us not to be afraid of thunderstorms. We’re getting some later today!

roof over the porch and a glass of wine while watching the storm approach

Same! I remember getting chairs out when I was in middle school with my father to sit outside as a hurricane was coming down on us.
It's been forever since I did anything like that. Thx for the jogging loose that memory!

I’m from the PNW too. Thunderstorms are so rare here, you have to enjoy every one. I went to school out east, where there were far more storms in summer, I loved every second.

I am a weather enthusiast (and nws storm spotter), my interest is in severe storms, so yes!! 🌩🌦🌬⛈️🌪🌀⚡️
Formal_Plum_2285@reddit
This is not Gen X. This is you and apparently your state.
snarlywino@reddit (OP)
Meh? I find younger generations being more “unreceptive” to a good thunderstorm, regardless of where they’re from.
Formal_Plum_2285@reddit
Yeah the point was not what younger generations do. It’s that it’s a cultural/geographic thing. I’ve never seen anyone in the cities do that.
snarlywino@reddit (OP)
Well, you nailed it then. This is for those that were lucky enough to grow up there. Maybe you’re right. This isn’t generational, it’s whatever the fuck you’re sensitive about today. #GenX

Unbeknownst to me, my son who is 29 was the “Weather Guy” in high school. He was making films of storms on our roof. We live in the Midwest.

Fuckin' love the sound of rolling thunder: constant 360° rumble in the sky, at least til the tornado sirens kick on.
snarlywino@reddit (OP)
That’s what I’m talking about bro!
snarlywino@reddit (OP)
Oh shit! It is still happening past midnight. I just came back outside. I’m just amazed I haven’t heard a single crack.
snarlywino@reddit (OP)
The rain is here. It’s about time.

I grew up in the northeast. We would get crazy summer storms that would scare the shit out of me. Now, I find them relaxing, especially at night.
snarlywino@reddit (OP)
I’m starting to hear some boomers. Buckle up #spokane.
Smittles@reddit
Also in the PNW, also hoping my cat is scared home. ✌️
snarlywino@reddit (OP)
It didn’t work. The storm snuck over without a peep. Took me another hour to get them in.
Do_U_Scratch@reddit
I love watching a good storm roll in. The air is charged with excitement, I’m charged with anticipation.

I'm in the PNW too. I was out picking up my son from work and saw a flash of lightning that lit up the sky in the distance. Only a split second but what a sight for that split second. No thunder expected this weekend, but plenty of rain. I'm actually looking forward to it.
snarlywino@reddit (OP)
It’s guaranteed to rain. I paid to wash my truck today
MisterSandKing@reddit
Ditto! Oregonian here, heard it was raining in Eugene, but not in my neck of the woods.
Molly_Deconstructing@reddit
I knew you were local!!! I’m enjoying it as well.

Growing up in the mid-west, we got some decent thunderstorms, but nothing like tornado alley.
What comes to mind is my cousins visiting from out of town. There was a picture taken of my cousin standing next to the sliding glass door looking outside with a terrified look on her face. I don't recall the exact thing happening and I don't know if I was in the room when it was taken, but I do recall the photo.
I was not afraid of storms because my dad explained them to us growing up. He did the weather for the pilots in the Air Force.

Live in CA. But I spent two years in Austin. Kinda miss having actual weather.
KnightKrawler68@reddit
I live in California and I wish we had more thunderstorms. 😭

One of my favorite things to do when I lived on my grandfather's farm was to watch a storm come in from the west. That end of the property was wooded, so the clouds would come in over the trees across the pasture as the wind picked up and the temperature dropped. Grandpa had a sense of just when to stop work and put everything away, get the barn and hangar doors shut and generally batten down the hatches to where we would just get everything squared away as the first raindrops started to hit the metal roof.

Thats not a Gen X thing...thats a Suthan thang.

I live in the west and I would love some rain.
Ameah@reddit
I love that feeling! We would open all the windows before a storm, enjoy the temp and humidity change, then race to close them as the rain started.
