What were your most original homemade Halloween costumes growing up?

I'd say my most interesting homemade Halloween costumes in the '90s were for ages 11 and 12 respectively (1995 and 1996). At age 11, I dressed as a moth: I started with using cheap angel wings as a base, but then created headwear of feathery antennae to wear on my head. I was a huge nerd for insects at the time. Whenever someone said, "Nice butterfly costume.", I'd have to correct them by informing them I was a moth!
Then a year later I dressed as a giant 9V battery. I found a rectangular cardboard box, painted it red, painted on a large "9V" on the chest, then glued two empty tuna fish cans to the roof to act as connectors. Unfortunately, since it was dark outside, no one could really tell what I was supposed to be, so kids just assumed I was a robot!
About a year later I actually hollowed out a real pumpkin to wear on my head as a mask, as seen in that Halloween episode of the Adventures of Pete & Pete. The real challenge was finding a pumpkin that was light enough that didn't cause neck strain, yet wouldn't be too small.

I was an eggplant one year and everyone thought I was Barney.
Laura Ingalls Wilder another year and everyone thought I was either Bo Peep or just “old time-y girl”
After that I stayed more conventional. The school wasn’t ready for me.

Halloween growing up was always a collaboration between me, my parents, and sometimes a saintedly patient reference librarian.
She was kind enough to help me find microfiche images of Victorian illustrations of Greek myths when I wanted to be Medusa, because the modern illustrations just weren't nailing down what I wanted. I was nine.
We ended up using a pattern for a Cleopatra costume and modifying it. Then we got a big rubber snake and drilled holes in it, which we filled with smaller plastic snakes. My long hair went in rag curls the night before and then we coiled the rubber snake through it all. I looked great. I was proud of the ingenuity and thought it was so original.
Then I got a Disney Adventures magazine that asked their staff what their coolest costume might be. And one of the editors said Medusa.

I was Mr potato head one year. I made a sack out of brown fabric and shoved a ton of stuffed animals inside and face parts out of felt with velcro dots to stuck them to myself.

Dad panicked at Halloween cause I had no costume. He came up with hobo I know that’s a bad term now but it was the 80s. He even gave me a beard with shoe polish and a stick with a bandana on it it had something in it I can’t remember. The other was me panicked I did the Charlie Brown sheet with holes for eyes and puff painted boo all over it.

I was a cardinal (bird) when I was 4, and the costume was wings rhat my mom sewed to a long sleeved leotard in such a way that I couldn't put my arms down without busting the stitches. It also had a skirt/tail and a mask with feathers. It was a pretty good costume all things considered

Koopa Troopa. Yellow from head to toe, big red shell with wings velcroed to my back. Man, I wish I still had a pic.

I did a very badass skeletor. I wore blue shirt and blue tights and black swimsuit bottoms. I got a skull mask and this purple ninja head covering. I made the skirt and shoulder pads out of duct tape and I used those floral beads from the dollar tree as studs inside my tape-skirt. I can't remember what I did for the boots.

I was a dinosaur girl. My favorite was rhamphorhynchus and by gum my mom made me one! Complete with paper mache head, arm wings, and long diamond tipped tail.
It was glorious and I wore it for months until it disintegrated!

Wow, your mom sounds cool
Not_a_werecat@reddit
Yeah, she really did a lot of cool stuff like that for me growing up. :)

My mom had a lime green bathrobe that she turned into my favorite monster when I was 10. The Blob. I had junk and body parts stuck to me. She was a very creative person and I miss her very, very much.

my fave costume was when I was a giant M&M. it was just posterboard cut out in a circle with a white 'm' glued on the front on either side of my body 😂

In fifth grade my friends and I were all very interested in the 1992 election. We went as members of the Clinton/Gore families. Bill and Al had masks but no one else did.

Ghostbuster. It resembled nothing in the movies or cartoon, but man was it fun to make/wear.

Used a cardboard box to dress as a gas pump.

I was headless!
I used Posterboard stapled into a tube for the torso with a hole cut out for my head to peak through some undone buttons on one of my dad's work shirts. I don't remember how I got my hands through, but they were cradling my head.
Ended up with some blisters from the poster board rubbing and trench foot from trick or treating, trudging through huge puddles for so long. Totally worth it.

I didn't get a cool homemade costume. My mom dressed me up in one of those plastic bag type care bear costumes while my older sister got a home made Lydia costume from the Beetlejuice cartoon. Complete with webbing. I was so jealous in my sweat bag of a costume
I don't have a picture, but it looked along the lines of this.

Ha, I had Beetlejuice sneakers in 1st grade and my older sister had a Lydia lunchbox!

Maybe not original, but was hands down my favourite when I was a kid: I hated costumes at the time, mostly because I was still a bit recognizable.
My Mom made me this awesome ghost costume off a pattern from the fabric store. All white with silver trim along the edges. Wore it two years in a row before I outgrew it and stopped doing Halloween.

Around 6th grade I decided to go as the headless horseman. I got one of those big punching balloons and covered it in papier-mâché to make a pumpkin head. I was going to paint a classic jack-o’-lantern face but my dad offered to do it for me and I let him. I don’t know exactly what he was thinking because he gave it big realistic bloodshot human eyes. He worked really hard on it and it was really well done but it made no sense. The headless horseman isn’t supposed to have eyes because he HAS NO HEAD. I just looked like a random weirdo with a giant orange head and nobody had any clue what I was supposed to be. I’m still bitter about it.

Growing up we didn't do Halloween, so I made up for that after college. My favorite homemade costume was a full body Pac-Man suit.

In 1990, I wanted to be Link from Legend of Zelda. I took a light-up sword I'd gotten at the circus, and fashioned a shield out of cardboard and grocery bags, decorated it with a marker... And then wore some random Batman shirt and a vampire cloak my mom had made for my sister. I think I just felt like it needed to be a little more costume-like.
Nobody knew who I was supposed to be, of course, some people asked if I was Batman. Who can forget all those times Batman had a sword and shield, right? 🤪 That was my first foray into cosplay, such as it was.

In the late 80s my mom made me knight armor out of cardboard and tin foil
BalrogRuthenburg11@reddit
I was a mosquito, lobster, and a shark. All sewn by hand by my mother
AshDogBucket@reddit
In college i went as Alice in chains. Alice in Wonderland costume, plus big chains.
In my teen years I went as a guitar one year, homemade out of cardboard. Another year I made my own butterfly wings out of cardboard and decorated them by cutting up my old colorful clothes that didn't fit anymore.

I was into the phantom of the opera in gradeschool ( I know, weirdo) but my reason was I played it on piano and was into classical music from music lessons. Anyway, made a paper mache mask and was " the phantom" for haloween in I think 4th or 5th grade.
Daylight-Silence@reddit
I, a male, was Monica Lewinski by way of my older sister's blue prom dress
Adrasteia-One@reddit
I went as the headless horseman in 5th grade. I borrowed my grandpa's big navy coat and placed the head opening right on top of my head (I could see through the opening where I left a couple of buttons undone. I created a fake head out of a wicker basket and placed two small flashlights on the front like eyes. I was so proud of my creativity, hehe.
lueur-d-espoir@reddit
I didn't have a costume one year so I used a marker to write "ME" on a white t-shirt and went trick or treating with my friends anyways. When someone would ask "and what are you supposed to be?" I'd confidently with a big grin say "The greatest girl in the world!" And use both thumbs to point at my t shirt. Lol

Crayons. I was green & my brother was red

When I was 7 I was a Rubik's Cube. My mom got some sorta appliance box, used electrical tape to make the squares, and painted them the different colors. Cut holes for my arms and head. It was my favorite toy. I was 39 when I finally learned how to solve one 😂
osddelerious@reddit
I was super pickle one year. Pickle costume one year became super picket the next

I was a big Dan Marino fan when I was in grade school and one year, I wanted to go as him for Halloween. I had his jersey but my parents wouldn't buy a replica Dolphins helmet because they were expensive. We had an old plastic Cowboys toy helmet, so my mom helped me peel the stickers off then hand paint it into a Dolphins helmet.
Ah, memories.

I was a bumblebee one year and a flower another year. I used yellow road tape for the bumblebee stripes. For the flower I think I wore green overalls and made a flower petal head surround with elastic and construction paper.

I was a coffee maker. And I dispensed real coffee. Rebar frame for strength, styrofoam I carved to shape, paper-mâché. I had two airpots and tubing. I could reach an arm inside to dispense the coffee.

Halloween of 1984. Six year old me was put into a damn homemade pink bunny suit in the spirit of A Christmas Story for a family picture. Thank God I didn't have to go out Trick-or-Treating in that. I wasn't going to go if it meant going out in that.

I had a younger brother and sister and I caught an episode of Rugrats where the adults had a Halloween party and someone was dressed as a headless person holding a head. It was easier for them to pull off as a cartoon not having to obey human physics and all. I stuffed my brother's toy-ish shoulder pads from the JCPenney catalog with towels and set that on top of my hunched back. I threw on an old coat and cut holes in the sides of the front and of the sleeves. I stuffed the sleeves so they looked full and then stuck my arms through the holes in the jacket into the holes in the sleeves and then held my head with one hand.
It was uncomfortable because I had to hunch to keep the shoulder pads on. So I just laid in a recliner and got up to hand out candy. I wore it to the high school dance as well but I only wore it for the beginning.

Old bed sheet that had holes. My mom put that on me and moved a hole to one eye so i could see. I walked around as a ghost

Mom made me a Gumby costume. It was green felt over a cardboard frame. By the time I got home from school, it was done. Mom just drew a fake beard and made me a Hobo for trick or treating.

I was a scare crow with actual straw in my clothes. Mom out did herself that year

Charlie Brown. Just drew that crooked black strip on a yellow shirt.
