I gotta wonder if anyone actually saw this cartridge doing well. The .17 HM2 kind of did this already (non-toxic bullet notwithstanding?), and while it is still around, it isn't really a success.
Honestly, if there was some sort of changeup in rimfire ammo I would want, it would probably be match quality .17 HMR.

Apparently 17hmr does have solid lead free options. I was just doing some light digging to check this.

I use a .17 hmr with hornady's 15.5gr NTX (non-lead) rounds for small game in California and can hit minute of ground squirrel out to 200 yards. They shoot extremely well.

I had mentioned the .17 HM2 since that was built on the .22 LR case and would be as close to an apples-to-apples comparison. But it looks like CCI and even Hornady no longer make their lead-free loads for it. But .17 HMR still has options from both, as you saw.

Honestly, for the most part, I barely knew HM2 existed when it was new, so I don't blame you at all for assuming it to be a typo.
But yeah. I just mean to say, the ideas behind the .21 sharp were basically already tried 20 years ago and it didn't really work out. What did Winchester think changed between now and then to believe it could catch on this time?

It has benefits for target and game. Can actually be lead free which is safer if you're going to eat what you shoot. It's not a heeled bullet, so it has some significantly better external ballistics. Potentially more accurate and consistent. Just needs a barrel swap to work with anything .22lr.

This would probably make a lot more sense if it were developed 100 years ago or something but everyone already has their 22lr and 22wmr, and being 21 caliber heavily limits its versatility otherwise. I’d love to see some kinda competition use for this cartridge (subsonic high BC match ammo) or similar but it seems infeasible

It is a single source of supply from only Winchester - a monopolized gimmick rimfire. Maybe if other manufacturers start pumping it out it might have a chance to stick around...until then, you can't reload it so it is a novelty cartridge at best.
