CDL No experience jobs

My husband plans to get his CDL at a local school. What is the best way for him to secure a job afterwards without 6 months driving experience?

Thank you again for taking the time to reply and share. Would it be beneficial for him to pay for his own CDL training upfront vs free training with a Mega? It's my understanding that some companies may reimburse for training.

Look into local community colleges, most states have a free or low-cost program for CDL classes, especially for folks retraining. I got mine (Alabama) that way, didnt pay a dime out of pocket.

Dot Foods if yall are in the hiring area and willing to have him be home weekly. It’s also a path to $100k in 3 years or less.
___GRUMPY___@reddit
Yeah go to Dot if you want shit equipment. Cameras inside and outside the truck. Working on hot/cold docks at all hours. Management that don’t give two shits about their drivers and dispatch that rather email than pick up the phone and call their driver.
icaaryal@reddit
Sorry that was your experience. Idgaf about cameras when I made $113k last year not working the dock because I’m no-touch. My equipment experience has been fine and my management seems to care enough. You sounded pretty miserable though. Can’t imagine where you went that was better.

I wanna know where you work. What you described is 95% of driving jobs now, so if you’re at a place that isn’t that let us know who you’re running for.

Thank you! All of your responses as extremely helpful. He has 30 years experience in another Industry. He just wants to be able to be local or regional, without spending a year OTR. Good to know that it's less time now.
LastMongoose7448@reddit
Some of the megas have a lot of dedicated local and regional accounts. You might not start on one, but it won’t take more than a month or so to get on one assuming he doesn’t run into anything.

Look into Roehl they seem to have good home time options.
Apparently Crete just had a pay raise, though not 100% on that.
If he is willing to get tanker endorsement and hazmat, and isnt afraid of a little physical labor, hauling fuel is something he can do down the line (usually requires some experience) that pays extremely well.

Check indeed and read job descriptions in your area. If he's interested in local, keep a list of the day cab companies you see out and about and go check the career page on their websites later.

Apply for jobs that ask for less than two years even if he doesn't have it. I got my first job by lying on the online application so I didn't get filtered out. It wanted 6 months experience and I wanted six figures so I figured neither one of us would be happy. Guy asked why my application online said I had six months but my resume didn't have any experience listed. I explained who I was, what I could do, and how much I wanted to learn. He brought me in for an interview and all the sudden my lack of experience didn't matter. Sometimes you have to work around the AI filters to talk to a human and go from there. 2 years or more I wouldn't bother.
love_truck@reddit
Hell yeah. Recruiters don’t hesitate to lie to us so fuck em, we should all be able to embellish a little to get in the door
WanderingCheesehead@reddit
Haul garbage.
echo78@reddit
OTR with a mega is the answer. Try to see what mega’s have dedicated accounts near where you live and if he is lucky he could land that dedicated account fairly quickly.
CupSoggy2912@reddit
Go over the road for however long the job you’re trying to have in trucking requires. If you’re LUCKY you can get a local job right out the gate but don’t waste your time thinking you have whatever & you’ll get hired. The quicker you get hired after receiving license the better it will look.
RegularInformation44@reddit
Foodservice. If you have a pulse and an A on your license they will hire you.
rilloroc@reddit
Not food service. If he's already for 30y experience in something else, he don't have the back for food service.
Requettie@reddit
OTR mega for a minimum of 3 to 6 months. No need for a year anymore. Get in, survive, leave!
food service is there but he needs to be in shape.
Gilgamesh2000000@reddit
You need experience.
A_Shipwreck_Train@reddit
I deliver propane (class b), air/gas cos around here will hire with no experience. I did concrete before that, same deal. FWIW both my yards have been full of guys who noped out of OTR for these local gigs and say they and their families are way happier.0
MissYouDesertRat@reddit
Go OTR with a mega for 6 months
OceanLibra@reddit
Mega company or food or beer delivery (back breaking work)
chocolate_asshole@reddit
company sponsored training or megas are basically it, pay kinda sucks but everyone wants experience and no one gives it right now, it’s stupid how hard getting that first job is
