C5 on CA I-5?

Came up behind this big boy headed northbound on CA I-5 near Firebaugh.
Grabbed a few pics and then went on ahead and pulled over on wide shoulder to get some of it on approach š
Apologies if this isnāt a C5. Seems smaller than I recalled seeing at Sacramento Air Show a few years back but then this doesnāt have itās enormous wings and isnāt standing.
mfigroid@reddit
Californian here. It the 5, not I 5.
N13022RE@reddit
Nevadan here: itās I-5
N2DPSKY@reddit
It's got a roll through your state for naming rights. The 5.
N13022RE@reddit
I think the gubment already named it Interstate 5?
N2DPSKY@reddit
Yeah, like I said, the 5. There isn't another 5 that we need to differentiate so we drop interstate. We're quick here. Saves time. And we're not British, so we don't say "take 5", like "take them to hospital". We speak like the Americans. It's the hospital. It's the 5. You keep saying interstate though. That way we'll know you're not from around here.
N13022RE@reddit
I-5 is less to say than the 5. Also same! Helps identify the Californians. We all win, we all lose.
N2DPSKY@reddit
How many syllables in I-5? Do you see where I'm going?
N13022RE@reddit
Way more than I-5 once you include all the explanation you have to do to the rest of the country that just says it properly!
N2DPSKY@reddit
Most people don't require this much explanation.
mfigroid@reddit
Word.
mfigroid@reddit
It's OK to be wrong.
jay_in_the_pnw@reddit
I think that makes you a Southern Californian, and up in the Bay Area it might just be 5. You're in the Mission District for some hella good burritos. From their hop on 80 south to 580 to 5, head south on 5 until Kettleman City for In-n-out. Jump back on the 5 and take it over the Grapevine until you hit the 405. Take the 405 to the 10, west on 10 until you get to Gladstones. Time for dinner.
mfigroid@reddit
Article mentioned Fresno, which is the dividing line between North and South. Or is it Bakersfield?
You are definitely Northern California.

Not sure where itās going but know it was [diverted from a boneyard.] (https://www.reddit.com/r/aviation/s/bzREDl9cw4)
Photo_Jedi@reddit
It is a C-130. Saw the same one on I10 AZ last Friday.
DadJustTrying@reddit (OP)
Correct. I just didnāt realize that at the time I posted š¤¦š¼āāļø Cool that you saw it earlier in itās trip. Others did too in Palm Springs and Pasadena. Turns out itās from Pederson AFB!
Also, if you have a few minutes, have a read through this discussion. There are some great comments!
Chrisdkn619@reddit
Where is the 5 only two lanes?
DadJustTrying@reddit (OP)
Itās two lanes northbound and two southbound with large divide in between. This was I5 a few miles south of Panoche Rd.
EnthusiasmGlobal@reddit
Probably not I5 looks like might be closer to Fairfield, Travis AFB .
Chrisdkn619@reddit
Exactly! OP said on i5, but downvoted nonetheless

Yep, so I learned very quickly after posting š There are some great posts in this thread about the size difference you reference, includng pictures and links.
JWalker_25RSTI@reddit
Pretty crazy they managed to fit it on a trailer. Itās not a C-5 either but a C-130.
Maleficent-Door6461@reddit
its a XL Specialized trailer judging by the rear, with either a 110k, 120k, 130k, or 140k pound capacity
Darth_Thor@reddit
Looks to be a normal lower trailer. Theyāre pretty common in the heavy haul industry.
Maleficent-Door6461@reddit
XL Specialized is a trailer manufacturer, one of the things they make is extendable lowboy trailers like this one...
Darth_Thor@reddit
Oh I didnāt even know that itās extendable, thanks for teaching me something!
chinookhooker@reddit
Yeah, looks like standard lowboy with 3x20k axles, 100k pound limit
Maleficent-Door6461@reddit
Its not a standard lowboy, you can see the 20' extension at the back of the well, and it's built by XL Specialized so it's at least a 110k capacity
autofan06@reddit
Standard flatbed holds 5 isus / 463l pallets. Standard short 130 load is about same same.
Maleficent-Door6461@reddit
who measures civilian trailers in that kinda stuff? lol
autofan06@reddit
A contingency and wartime planner. Someone who has to move that kinda stuff via whatever mode of transport works best at the time for the given mission. Quick pallet math is the best way to determine initial feasibility without bothering with full on load plans.
Also helps to save some tax dollars when the team is in initial planning saying they need 6 isus for a trip and I can interject early āhey can yāall consolidate to 5ā or just tell them they only get 5.
Hobear@reddit
This is why I'm on reddit. Finding the experts in the minutia. Why would I ever need to know this? I don't but when someone asks how trailers are loaded I'll be ready with this tidbit. Thank you for your service to my internet trivial pursuit!
Rdubya291@reddit
This is NOT how trainers are loaded. This is how trailers/logistiscs are planned for the DoD.
Axo2645@reddit
"Isus"?
autofan06@reddit
ISU internal airlift / helicopter slingable unit.
Many different shapes and sizes but most all have 463L dimension/ patterned base so that they can be locked into mil airlift spec rails. Most often referring to the ā ISU 90ā for the 90ā tall version
Itās a 88ā/108ā container with various reinforcements so they are rated to be lifted and flown via helicopter sling load. Much nicer to just toss shit in one and close it up vs building and netting a proper pallet.
monk3yarms@reddit
ISUs = internal slingable units. They're containers that can use the roller system on cargo aircraft or by sling loaded like under a helo

michael1265@reddit
The guy a few cubicles down from me was armor. I leave sticky notes on his keyboard such as āSign the document, you dirty, nasty leg!ā
atclew@reddit
My best friend, known since elementary school, was All American, and calls me a "dirty, rotten, stinkin' leg" at least once a month! I own it, 'cause I am, after all, just a leg.
michael1265@reddit
My best friend from 2nd grade on went airborne after high school, and I enlisted a few months later. Politics recently ended the friendship sadly (after 50 years!), but Iām just happy he can never call me a legš¤£
atclew@reddit
HA! I was the opposite. I enlisted while still in HS, and best friend enlisted after hanging out while on leave en route to first duty station in Germany. I had tried to get Airborne/Air Assault/Pathfinder schools en route, and even volunteered to take my own leave en route to go but was denied, "We don't need airborne qualified controllers in Fort Hood/Germany!".
I figure shit happens like it's supposed to anyway.
Thankfully my best friend and I still text a few times a week (he's been in Japan for over 20 years). A mutual friendship of ours, who was the third of our Three Musketeers back in the day ended the same way yours probably did,(I know I'm making an assumption here).
michael1265@reddit
Itās not a big assumption to make. That movement has killed a lot of friendships.
Present_Process_726@reddit
At least your co-worker was in the service, I was a 7 year old dependent hearing that! It was all in good fun though.
Tuttle_10@reddit
Interesting. So I learned this in the Civil Air Patrol as shown below. How much variation was there for this cadence? Does each unit / branch have their variation?
C-130 going down the strip,

Iāll splatter all over the country side
(And I canāt remember the rest)
michael1265@reddit
I think the variation is constant at unit level. The way I learned it, itās mostly the same as yours, but with different words sprinkled in on almost every line. I was in the 82nd.

HEYYYY. Thatās ours from Peterson AFB. We were doing an ISO on it to get it ready for a final flight to the boneyard or wherever, but they ended up finding structural issues and decided that it wonāt be flying. Took a couple of weeks but they basically disassembled it right on the flight line. Awesome to see it randomly pop up on Reddit.

What a journey ā from you to someone saying they saw it today in Palm Springs at ~6AM, another ~4+hours later on W 210 in Pasadena, and then I saw it on CA 5 N at ~3pm.
Sybrite@reddit
Thanks for posting it. Always cool to see something like that in the wild. I didnāt end up helping with the disassembly, but it did suck that we did some prop changes and engine swaps and a bunch of other work only for it not to fly. Silver lining is that since we did get the engines ready, we were able to throw those engines on another one. When we find cracks in the combustion section during a borescope, it results in a swap and we pull the engine apart in our back shop and replace the cans to prep for a future change. Always rotating lol.

Good thing about the C5 is they have actual passenger cabin in the top with regular seats (although they face backwards). Flew space A many times as a kid and the C5 was way more comfy than the cargo seats on the other planes lol

I never knew that it had a cabin, canada doesnāt have any c-5 so i only have some limited experience with c-17 and c-130 and just assumed that it was the same, thatās really cool!

Fun fact. The unusable area behind the ramp, under the tail on the C-5 is more space than on an entire C-130....

Key-Illustrator-5562@reddit
The flatbed has a Fuselage Trainer, or FuT. These are specialized active duty, AFRC, or ANG airframes, in this case a Lockheed C130H model, repurposed from decommissioned aircraft to support training for cargo loading, aerial delivery, emergency procedures, and other training requirements that can be accomplished on the ground. The numbers on the nose, "3021" are the partial serial number of the aircraft. The complete SN should be 92-3021 the previously was assigned to 910th Airlift Wing, Youngstown OH.

I have a few thousand hours on the HC-130H, I know lol. It was a yolk.
Aviation_enthusiast8@reddit
Alright, assumed you didnāt as you didnāt mention any of that
mrinformal@reddit
You're short 125 Cs.
Acceptable-Elk-8372@reddit
Great photos!
Former_Film_7218@reddit
That truck and the plane fuselage can fit in a c5
Antique-Dragonfly615@reddit
Not nearly big enough for a C5 or C141 or C17. C130 definitely
eyeballchambers-@reddit
How can u be so confidently incorrect about what kind of airplane that is
Try a little harder jfc
Gack055@reddit
Whoās building a simulator of the C130 ? It wonāt fit in the room?
cptnkeif@reddit
As someone who has hauled heavy equipment, this makes me very uncomfortable
jes77@reddit
Good thing they put the little flag on the back, otherwise you might not notice the plane on the back of a truck
CaptainMegaNads@reddit
nanomolar@reddit
The C-130 can take off in the space of a soccer field with RATO.
This is the opposite of that, no wings or engines, needs all of I-5.
OptiGuy4u@reddit
They would need a second and third truck if it was a C5! š
ExplanationGreen6942@reddit
It's on the way to get MRLN installed
MacGibber@reddit
Thatās a C130 which easily fits inside a C5
bristoltobrisbane@reddit
Ground Engineer: Itāll do a tripā¦
Frost640@reddit
To give some perspective, the Wright Brothers first flight could've taken place inside a C-5.
Volboris@reddit
You know that trucker has the best story at the bar now.
irascible_Clown@reddit
Is this a military vehicle or do they contract out heavy load hauling?
Cautious_Buffalo6563@reddit
130
AdRepresentative8236@reddit
Lmao, that's not a C5, This is a C5
Av8or4Lyfe@reddit
You spelled C-17 wrong.
AdRepresentative8236@reddit
Oop, I posted the wrong picture lmao
AdRepresentative8236@reddit
Well either way, That semi could fit on a C-17:
Gloomy-Sample349@reddit
Who is going to tell him???
AdRepresentative8236@reddit
That's not going on a trailer
AdRepresentative8236@reddit
That red dot Is as tall as a person
Competitive_Cheek607@reddit
One hell of an RV setup. Honestly this does a better job of helping me understand the size of a C-130 than any other pictures Iāve seen of it. I knew it wasnāt huge but itās hard to gauge plane sizes a lot of the time
asianconqueror1@reddit
Itās a C130, not a C5.
neightn8@reddit
If thatās a c5 then I saw a Cessna 172 breaking the sound barrier the other day.
USSSLostTexter@reddit
C-5 + C-125. thats a C-130, or at least a good chunk of one
Muse_and_her_Artist@reddit
Pretty sure that is a Blackbird. Or an F-14. Could also be a new stealth fighter. Or a UFO. Hard to tell from these angles.
BuildsWithWarnings@reddit
It's super easy to mistake perspective with these things. Like, an F-15 doesn't feel huge until it does.
A C-5 is far larger than this C-130, but such is. Cool find!
slacker130@reddit
Got time on that one, pretty sure. I think itās an old Peterson tail.
biggiecheesehimself@reddit
thatās a F-22
Killentyme55@reddit
C150
Go_Loud762@reddit
Probably a C-17.
aw_shux@reddit
Itās always a C-17.
Bob70533457973917@reddit
Sorta. More like C5 + 125 = C130.
ontheroadtonull@reddit
Reminds me of the old Lucasarts game "Full Throttle".
Agile_Tumbleweed_242@reddit
c-130 maybe a fuselage trainer (FUT) for familiarization training for maintenance and operations troops

The C-130 is one of the most recognizable aircraft in the World. How dare you come to this r/ and misidentify it!!

Usually it's the other way around. C130 carrying a truck

Glad Iām not delusional. Iāve been on C5 and I remember it way bigger than that. The comments for a C130 seem much closer to the way I remember
Notonfoodstamps@reddit
It's a C-130
...... being loaded into a C-5.
MikeMcAwesome91@reddit
Why dont they put wings on it and fly it instead of towing it? Are they stupid?

C-130
BackgroundDrawer3443@reddit

C130. WAAAAAYYYYYY To small for a C5
SpectrumStudios12@reddit
It is a C-130, future museum aircraft?
Ziegler517@reddit
A c-5 has a diameter of 27 feet or less than half of what you are looking at. This my friend is a c-130
bradopolis@reddit
Thatās a Cessna 172, dumbass
EnvironmentalLead311@reddit
Definitely a C-130
wubb7@reddit
Thatās clearly a semi truck
BadTraditional401@reddit
C-5 would be as wide as both lanes of highway and could eat that semi and a tall trailer...
tinmd@reddit
not a c5 unless just the nose.
Notonfoodstamps@reddit
C-130.
You could drive that semi truck and the C-130 on its back into C-5 cargo bay.
