Ehhhh, maybe. Looks like that Penske truck and F150 were alongside him. I get what the cop was doing but some better situational awareness could have prevented this.
I meant the cop could've moved, but even if he couldn't get over, I feel he should've have enough time to hit his lights between seeing the cooler and coming to a full stop.. and even beyond that, I'd much rather take my chances hitting a plastic cooler than to be absolutely railed by a 18-40k ton vehicle. at the end of the day, they're professional drivers just as we are.. but hey, what do I know 🤷♂️
Imagine the only car for miles that had professionally mounted lights that designates people must come to a stop and warn of upcoming hazards…. And yet that was never utilized while coming to an unexpected stop in the middle of a FREEWAY
I agree! Cop definitely at fault here. Should've done a traffic break for that. At minimum throw on those lights! Could've been way worse if trucker slammed on the brakes and jackknifed causing a pile up. Hope no one was hurt regardless of fault...
Agreed. 100% they teach you in driving school for 4 wheelers that you don't swerve or slam on the brakes for animals or road hazards. At least they used to.
Still do, but they used to too. If you swerve you're at fault for whomever you hit. If you slam on brakes, you get animal in your face. Also rear ended by the half asleep trucker behind you.
No. Look at the hood mirror. That car was in the way. It moved right but there was not enough room I think. Did the cop have his overheads on? I can't tell.
Agreed. That car wasn't past the steer tire until changing lanes at the very last second. That cop wasn't very smart. A semi doesn't stop on a dime. He would have been better off hitting that cooler. It's not like it's going to be full of bricks. Ice, steak, hotdogs, drinks. But no bricks.
Any dash cam is just a pinhole view of what is going on around a truck. Better to hold the lane than to swerve and lie a truck on its side. Not that everybody thinks as I do but if I was safety I sure the hell wouldn't blame the truck driver for that.
Notice how the car sped up to block you in. I swear they do it on purpose to make sure an accident happens. I literally watch these people stay by the end of trailers for miles only to conveniently needing to pass the moment something is in your way
Just before I saw this post I passed a cop pulling someone over. Got a look at the cop and it was some 20 something year old kid that was desperately trying to grow a beard. Probably would have slammed on the brakes too in a similar situation. If they are that desperate for cops I can surely get a job as one
Pig... er, cop training is only 8 or 10 weeks, and all the cops I see in this town are 20-somethings who actually look about 14. They are a buncha lil pussies. They call out 3 or 4 cop cars for a simple traffic stop.
My neighbor set his kitchen on fire (by mistake) and after all fire dept vehicles got here, one of the lil sissy pigs showed up, parking his car on my grass; not the ROW grass, he parked on my lawn. Making a statement, I suppose.
No lights, no sirens, just a single miniscule young boy in a pig suit acting all tough and shit. It made me laugh. I met a lot of those types of pi.. police officers when I drove a truck. I also seen them in the security biz.
It’s like that idiot last year who stopped in the fwy because she missed her exit. She caused an accident but fled after. They did track her down and charged her.
Nah trucker at fault was following too close the book says you have to follow 1 sec for each 10 feet so 6 sec follow distance... It doesnt look like it is 6 second gap more like 3 second
Cops (all types) are some of the most disrespectful drivers on the road. Think about it, some of these guys are in their early 20's just power tripping b/c they never get called out.
You ever see a cop use a turn signal? And we wonder why other drivers don't use turn signals. They set a bad example for the public.
I got a friend whose niece almost died in a accident due to a cop. Was middle of night on yhe highway, several miles of it ate not lit by street lamps. This cop decided it be a great idea to stop on the middle, no lights, no hazards on. Supposed didnt see till it was too late to stop, and we talking normal speeds here, 70mph. Two lane highway. Worst part, she had her baby in the car with her, thankfully, no life was lost. But still, dumb cop.
Saved the cooler, guess that's a rookie cop who missed something in training.
Newton's law of physics ice cooler versus semi truck. Not a problem. Police car versus semi truck problem.
No the truck driver was not following too close it's illegal to stop in the middle of a highway I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have been able to stop either sweet tart..
The reason why following distances are even a thing is for this exact reason; an emergency stop. Truck should have been able to stop in time if they were following at a safe distance and paying attention. The cop car had fully working brake lights.
Holy shit thats crazy. Could have been way worse..
No lights?? I get they tried to stop for an object on the road but no warning is wild.
Id argue the trucker wasn't at fault cus they had little to no warning to stop suddenly or get over.. but I know thats not how it'll go. Cus the driver should alwsys be "aware"
Yea that cop had no situational awareness. Must have been hyper focused on that cooler and didnt look behind him. Truck had some decent space between them but not enough for no warning and a sudden stop
Yep. A truck needs to be able to come to a complete stop at any time, yes even on the highway. Traffic happens out of nowhere sometimes and traffic can come to a halt out of nowhere. Constantly have to be keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. People won't like to hear this but it's the truckers fault
What is wrong with truckers these days? So many clowns out there. This guy is 100% negligent in video. Truckers need to stay in the right lane going 65. If people are getting on the highway then slow down.
All those saying he had a way out/wasn’t scanning far ahead…. The cop was pacing the truck next to them going highway speeds and suddenly full stopped.
Upon impact, a truck and car went past the truck that hit the semi.
There was no out in this situation when the cop slammed on their brakes.
Trucker was too distracted by the beeping to remember to hit the brakes. Over 2 seconds after the brake alert before he starts slowing down compared to the truck you reference being paced by the cop.
While the chances of not hitting were slim, it could have been a much less violent collision.
I see people blaming the cop saying no lights or warning (as if half a second lead time would change that anyway...) Yeah, well, if I'm in a car, I ain't got no lights and I'm not hitting a damn cooler in the road with my dinky car. I'm stopping too. If you can't stop before hitting the vehicle in front of you, you're too close! Sorry.
The comments in this thread have me worried for the future. How the fuck do this many "professional" drivers not understand that you have to be able to stop your vehicle in the space between you and the car in front of you? What the fuck are these driver mills teaching these idiots?
The reality of driving is that slamming on the breaks in front of a semi is probably going to get you obliterated. Relying on anyone keeping three seconds is a fools errand, because nobody actually does that.
The cop created the situation. The semi driver should have done better, but slamming your brakes on over a cooler after going the speed limit is more or less guaranteed to get you rear ended.
I can stop my truck perfectly fine in a quick stop situation like the one in the video. You may need to check the brakes on your rig. The car in front of you coming to a complete stop because of an obstacle in the road is literally a situation mentioned in the driver instruction manual. Go read it again.
Oh, they know. They just want any excuse they can find to blame a cop, or if it was an old washed up lady who stopped they'd say "she needs her license revoked blah blah."
Put [insert likable celebrity] in the drivers seat and they'd defend him all the way. No justice, everyone is full of shit. People suck.
That cop is going to have some serious back and neck pain for his mistake. Glad no one else got hurt. I mean presumably. I don't know what an impact like this feels like for the truck driver. And that Penske truck did look like it was overcorrecting before the video ended.
I love how people on here are literally blaming the cop for stopping for a road hazard. You don't know what is in that cooler....and neither did he, until he opened it up. You are responsible for maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, and including the possibility of said vehicle stopping.
But y'all are running your mouths(thumbs) like you've never picked up a driver's manual....
You must the the same ones who blatantly pull out in front 4 wheelers and wonder why they lose their minds because you use your collosal size an weight to your advantage when you run stop signs and do not yield the right of way....
We need to be better than these bs comments.
The comments in this thread have me worried for the future. How the fuck do this many "professional" drivers not understand that you have to be able to stop your vehicle in the space between you and the car in front of you? What the fuck are these driver mills teaching these idiots?
Nope, I’m licensed by a country in Europe. One thing is brake lights, but it travels by the same speed as the traffic around it before suddenly coming to a stop. I can’t speak for all the countries in the world, but I know my local police officers wouldn’t do anything like this, simply because it’s an recipe for an accident. But then again, I also know about a lawsuit between an emt and a highway police officer because the emt was busy with treating a injured person after an highway accident and the police wanted the trucks and ambulance away from the highway so cars could drive…
If a truck parks on the shoulder right and a car rear ends them and kills themselves the trucker is held at fault so same context should be used here no hazards no lights
Ummm that's not what happened here. A vehicle with BRAKE LIGHTS ACTIVATED utilized their brakes to avoid a collision.... Until the truck driver at fault ensured a collision.
And now that sheriff will retire with a full fucking taxpayer pension and post racist shit on fb and beat his wife for the rest of his life while that trucker might get fired and he fucked up like 10 other people’s days with random little damages. Fucking useless.
I learned this lesson the easy way thank God. I was driving in my personal truck and I stopped in the middle of the road because some kids we trying to run across the street. I stopped and some guy ran right into my tow hitch and busted his radiator and scratched my hitch. he was probably going about 20 mph but it was enough to whiplash me. dont stop during on coming traffic folks!
He was on his brakes as soon as it was clear the ford was not going the same speed as traffic. Swerving hard and tipping over or hiting another semi is not a good option
No he did. If you watch the left lanes the vehicles start gaining distance. Also the time it takes for the lines on the road to pass start taking longer the second the alarm goes off in the cab as well as how the road noise sounds. The car on the right next to the truck is also braking at the same time. Remember physics and inertia; Semis have lots of it and cant stop as fast as a cop car and there wasn't anywhere for the truck to move on the left or right as a pickup truck is seen going past barely a second after the impact.
Here in California the chp at least has the decency to serpentine and stop traffic to pickup something on the road. This cop musta thought his badge and car were all he needed.
I'm inclined to say that was the truck's fault, not the cop's. Yes, he stopped, yes, he didn't have his lights on, but the truck had plenty of time and room to react safely.
The only subreddit that people are blaming the trucker is in the trucker subreddit. Everywhere else this video is posted the people overwhelmingly are on the trucker's side.
That was not plenty of time to change lanes. That cop stopped on a dime. The truck would have flipped even if he didn't hit some other traffic in the other lane trying a manuever like that
I had a cop do this to me on 45S one time. Fortunately I had a clear lane to evade into. I actually hit the gas to go around because I was pretty sure braking would've lead to loss of control.

DazednConfuzed62@reddit
Damn, took out a Sheriff
IBringTheHeat2@reddit
Driver probably playing on his phone. He had plenty of following distance.
Sure-Debate-464@reddit
And how the hell would he supposed to know that he's in a dead f** stop?
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
Most of us use our eyes to see when something is at a dead stop. How else would you do it?
FindMateStraightFux@reddit
If I saw the cooler I’d drive around it. How else would you do it?
amp804@reddit
A safe driving distance means you're prepared to stop. Now if the cop jumped into the lane and slammed brakes that's a diff story
FindMateStraightFux@reddit
Good observation. You mean the driver of the cop car, right? He totally could’ve steered around a cooler if he’d have been paying attention.
AKWV80@reddit
Cops do some of the most dangerous stuff on the roads. Entitlement...
PutridContribution41@reddit
At least there's a dash cam for defensive measures. Cop's a moron. Even if that cooler was deer, I'd hammer down and run. That mofo over.
SchadDad@reddit
Truck only had 2 seconds of distance at highway speeds. Could have probably been avoided. The cop is still a fucking idiot, though.
J_cam202@reddit
What the shit
ThePeterbilt589@reddit
that looks more like a holy fuck to me
Riyeko@reddit
I'll see your holy fuck and raise you a holy fuck shit
hambutbacon@reddit
Damned if you do damned if you don't kind of situation.
Brantastic@reddit
Be a lot cooler if they didn’t stop.
Rising_Awareness@reddit
Karma is mostly a bitch; but sometimes it's just cooler. 😎
truckensafely@reddit
They force the laws on us but who’s forcing the laws on them?
JOliverScott@reddit
Newton's First Law of Motion was forced on him right there!
CombatDeffective@reddit
This same exact thing happened to me; except it was an old lady in a Ford Escape stopping for a couch.
ptk77@reddit
That's beyond stupid of the cop. He should have started a traffic break a mile up the road and had someone ready to get it.
UOLZEPHYR@reddit
Id sue the absolute fuck out of that officer and his agency.
Holy fuck.
(To add, driver should have done something when the alarm went off, but the officer here is 10,000 at fault )
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
Texting while driving? Because there was plenty of time to slow, swerve, whatever.
Nexus_104@reddit
He was on his brakes as soon as it was clear the ford was not going the same speed as traffic. Swerving hard and tipping over or hiting another semi is not a good option
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
Gotta disagree, dude. Looked like he barely reacted at all.
Night_rose2016@reddit
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
You're supposed to be able to stop your vehicle within the distance to the car in front of you. It's the truck driver's fault.
dontdoxmebro2@reddit
Here in California the chp at least has the decency to serpentine and stop traffic to pickup something on the road. This cop musta thought his badge and car were all he needed.
familyedit@reddit
Goodbye driver's license
GoMake_me_a_sandwich@reddit
Yeah. Doesn't even matter that it's the cop's fault. That guy's license is gonzo. Cop will blame him one way or another.
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
I'm inclined to say that was the truck's fault, not the cop's. Yes, he stopped, yes, he didn't have his lights on, but the truck had plenty of time and room to react safely.
GoMake_me_a_sandwich@reddit
The only subreddit that people are blaming the trucker is in the trucker subreddit. Everywhere else this video is posted the people overwhelmingly are on the trucker's side.
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
Well yeah, but that's because Reddit is decidedly ACAB.
kev17006@reddit
Exactly my thoughts!
kev17006@reddit
I dont know but it looks like the driver wasn’t looking far ahead, plenty of time to change lanes even reduce speed.
GoMake_me_a_sandwich@reddit
That was not plenty of time to change lanes. That cop stopped on a dime. The truck would have flipped even if he didn't hit some other traffic in the other lane trying a manuever like that
Mountain_Fuzzumz@reddit
Pow! Right in the pooper!
ArmpitNoise@reddit
2'fer
USSSLostTexter@reddit
dumb ass. i assume he stopped thinking he could then get to the shoulder behind that stopped truck?
Alubsey@reddit
Wonder what the story was behind that.
OsBaculum@reddit
I had a cop do this to me on 45S one time. Fortunately I had a clear lane to evade into. I actually hit the gas to go around because I was pretty sure braking would've lead to loss of control.
Apart-Ad1652@reddit
Cops own fault.
Excellent_Pay_8782@reddit
Trucker couldn't switch lanes, if you watch a few seconds more you see there are cars on the left and right of him.
Dino666A@reddit
Did not see lights flashing on top of cruiser. The truck driver didn't give an out by looking ahead and changing lanes. Hope all are ok.
Syllables_17@reddit
Holy shit. Hopefully he had a vehicle malfunction.
