Would I know if I accidentally put diesel in a Hyundai Azera?

Basically I stop at a gas station and suddenly like 7 dudes are walking around me so I’m panicking just trying to go quick, really needed gas and my dumbass didn’t have time to think about what I was doing. I clicked 87, but had to use the gas pump (was purple?) next to the diesel because the other regular pump was ripped off or something. I tried to look this up and I think it says I’m fine but just gotta make sure because I’m panicking and it’s my bosses car 🤦🏻♀️ surely if it had pumped out diesel, the car would already be showing signs of struggle right? And can a diesel pump even fit into a Hyundai azera gas tank?
Thank you
IUsedToLikeLimericks@reddit
Certainly in my locale the diesel pump won't physically fit in a petrol car. I believe this is standard pretty much everywhere.
corporaterebel@reddit
meh, the diesel pump head won't fit in a gasoline car... 7 dudes?
Own_Permission_7860@reddit (OP)
Yeah dude no idea where they even came from but I will not be returning to that fuckass gas station
Own_Permission_7860@reddit (OP)
Also It’s funny this is randomly getting downvotes for quite literally no reason
TrifleImpossible5997@reddit
And getting trolled by people saying the nozzles are different
Own_Permission_7860@reddit (OP)
Are they not?? I’m so confused now 😭😂 I’ll just be alot more cautious
TrifleImpossible5997@reddit
They're the same size when they're at the gas pumps. Usually (but not always) diesel handle is green, gas is black.
The only diesel nozzles that are bigger are usually on an "island" pump that you typically see 18 wheelers going to. This is so it doesn't take hours to fill up their 300+ gallon tanks.
You hit the button that said 87 on it. Diesel will not come out unless you hit the diesel button AND put the green handle in it. If you hit 87, and it dispensed something, it had to be 87.

Thank you so much h

It’s funny I’m getting downvoted for being afraid when I have a group of ghetto blk dudes who won’t break eye contact and circling me at an isolated gas station 😭 all while I have my two toddler nanny kids in the car. Just average chronic Reddit users behavior it seems tho 😂😂
corporaterebel@reddit
Depends on which country. I'm in NZ, they are the same. In USA, they are different.

Diesel fuel nozzle won't fit in a regular car gashole, so it's unlikely you put diesel into a gas car unless you were at a really janky station, not in the US, or left some details out.
TrifleImpossible5997@reddit
I'm gonna put my big diesel nozzle in your gashole to show you
Dr_StrangeloveGA@reddit
Well I mean put a funnel on that big boy and there's no reason you couldn't.
If you're just absolutely intent on violating the gas hole with diesel I suppose you could find a way.
The vehicle will be weird and probably not talk to you afterwards unless it's a duel fuel and into that.
Conscious_Canary_619@reddit
A lot of places use the regular nozzles for diesel now. It’s a pain if you have a locking tank that needs the big nozzle to open.
TrifleImpossible5997@reddit
Yeah the old Jetta tdi i had wouldn't even fit the 18 wheeler nozzle. Sure as fuck fit the gas one though 😭
Oni_sixx@reddit
Plenty of stations use the same size nozzle.
medguy_48@reddit
Nope. Different size holes on purpose
Oni_sixx@reddit
Ones at the truck pumps are bigger, not all the ones thatbare at the car pumps along with gas. Your talking to someone whoxuses diesel, gas and e85 across multiple vehicles.
2kewl4scool@reddit
But the cherry flavor diesel can still *barely* fit in your delivery vehicle if it’s your first time in bumfuk and haven’t seen farm diesel pumps before
WVSXSGuy@reddit
Not true. At least in the US.
A truck stop nozzle won’t fit, but at c-stores that advertise “Auto” diesel, it will fit.
LateralusV@reddit
don't call me a gashole
rjlawrencejr@reddit
lol, there was no comma.
Original_Ant7013@reddit
All these people saying the nozzles are different. Yes, there is a 1” version meant for larger trucks but regular pumps for light cars and trucks use the smaller size for both gas and diesel. At least that’s how it’s been everywhere I’ve lived and traveled to.
I drive a light diesel and use both sizes.
WillyDaC@reddit
And I discovered that in Nebraska a green nozzle doesn't mean diesel all the time. I damn near pumped my 7.3 Excursion Full of gas.
BouncingSphinx@reddit
It's almost exclusively BP stations that use black for diesel and green for gas. But yeah, nozzle colors aren't actually regulated to mean anything, just most gas is black and almost all diesel is green.
TrifleImpossible5997@reddit
Nice one !
Own_Permission_7860@reddit (OP)
Thank you!!!
stomper4x4@reddit
Yep this. 100%
BouncingSphinx@reddit
If you put diesel, you'd know basically immediately, at least if it wasn't a small amount before correcting yourself.
This is also why diesel hoses are completely separate from gas hoses. You can only get diesel from the diesel hose and after selecting the diesel button after lifting the diesel nozzle. If you pressed 87 and got anything at all, you did not get diesel.
ResponsibleBank1387@reddit
Did you push the 87 button? Then 87 came out.
Heisalsohim@reddit
Funny story, was roadtripping a while back, hit 87, looked at receipt, way more than normal. They charged for premium. I went back to the pump after successfully arguing for my money back and yes I hit the correct button (87 was on the left and I remembered hitting the left side button). Not sure if they were running a racket or if the pump was incorrectly programmed and filled up 93 but yeah lol
TrifleImpossible5997@reddit
Yep
Dear_Efficiency_3616@reddit
if it was diesel your car wouldnt run right like almost immediately
DesperateHead6324@reddit
wow ngl you prolly fine bro bosses car woulda died if diesel
jestem-lama@reddit
Actually it would still run, just very poorly.
Way better than putting petrol into a diesel car.
Dear_Efficiency_3616@reddit
thats what i said
FANTOMphoenix@reddit
That’s not at all what you said.
GMAN7007@reddit
That's exactly what they said. It's just worded differently.
FANTOMphoenix@reddit
“Edit: good chance I misread what OP said in their comment since I’m tired as fuck, but pretty sure they edited it to add in “right” after I replied.”
Making their statement say “your car wouldn’t run like almost immediately”
Which would make Jestems correction being “actually it would still run, just poorly” make sense.
GMAN7007@reddit
Lol why even reply it's not that big of a deal.
FANTOMphoenix@reddit
Why reply to me after they already replied to me 1 hour and 22 minutes before you did, it’s not that big of a deal.
GMAN7007@reddit
Because believe it or not I didn't look at every reddit comment on the thread.
FANTOMphoenix@reddit
Same reason why I copy and pasted my edit from my comment.
Lots of people don’t read whole comments.
Dear_Efficiency_3616@reddit
go to sleep. i didnt edit anything. good night have a good rest of your day
FANTOMphoenix@reddit
Fuckin tornado/lightning just knocked out the power to my place 10 min ago, it is now too hot to sleep there lol
Dear_Efficiency_3616@reddit
i said it wouldnt run right = would run just very poorly basically the same shit
WillyDaC@reddit
Trust me, they'll run. A small amount of gas will make a larger amount of diesel burn. It will start knocking like crazy and lose power and then you rebuild it. I will not disclose how I know this. Upside is you have a fresh engine after.
Own_Permission_7860@reddit (OP)
Thank you god bless Im good then
medguy_48@reddit
Diesel pump end won’t fit in gasoline vehicle
magtrash225@reddit
Nozzle won’t fit. You’d notice it
Gunk_Olgidar@reddit
You'd know in < 5 minutes if you put diesel in it.
dontcare53@reddit
Diesel pump has green handle
Late-Button-6559@reddit
No, because it was an accident.
The car will know though. And you’ll know soon after.
Savage_Sven@reddit
A diesel nozzle won’t fit inside an automotive filler neck, it’s larger to prevent this…..
Naerven@reddit
Unless your car ran like complete junk to begin with you would know instantly.
bradland@reddit
Knowing specifically which brand of gas station you were at would help. For example, Shell uses purple handles for their "giving pumps", which just donates to charity at no cost to you. It's still just regular gas.
NeedleGunMonkey@reddit
Check your receipt or online record of purchases. The unit cost will not be remotely the same.
KostyaFedot@reddit
Diesel smells. You will smell it in car after refill.
I know because I don't drive diesel, but was given company car couple of times.
It smells very different, if you ride gasoline cars.
GlassCannon81@reddit
The nozzle for diesel is significantly larger than the one for gasoline. It should not physically fit into the filler neck on your car.
Andy_850TB@reddit
Diesel pumps have a bigger nozzle that won't fit into a filler neck for a gas-powered car. Unfortunately that doesn't stop ppl from putting gas into diesel vehicles, which is a real bad idea.
AlaskaGreenTDI@reddit
This really isn’t true at many stations, there are both large and small diesel nozzles.
MultipleOrgasmDonor@reddit
Not sure why you’re being downvoted bc this is true. I have a diesel car that blocks the narrower ones from entering and there has been one time i wasn’t able to fill because of it
The car manufacturer even sells an adapter for this reason
tandyzmills@reddit
Diesel fuel nozzles are larger, so they won't fit in gas powered vehicles. So, if it went in, you put gas in it.
AlaskaGreenTDI@reddit
You probably would know immediately, unless you only added a very small amount to a relative to how much gas was still in the tank, then it’s possible you wouldn’t immediately notice.
Cool-Negotiation7662@reddit
If you add diesel to a running engine, say 50/50 it will likely continue running. It will likely not restart, and it will probably not be damaged so a drain and fill will probably fix it.
It may start the fuel in the lines if the engine is warm.
