19/50 the southernmost Carolina is ready for the unrelenting positivity

This is our newest unrelenting positivity post.
The state in question is the great state of South Carolina.
To all our foreign friends give a shout ask questions send praise. To our Americans do the same.
Ask questions, share stories, make jokes. Just remember not to be a jerk.
Recall the famous phrase my grandma invented “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything that isn’t redemptively funny.”
Stay tuned for 20/50 after this one.
The states are in random order based on my whim at the moment.

Charleston had several firsts in America:
First opera performance
First museum
First golf course
i_am_tim1@reddit
First public library, first museum, first purpose-built theater, the list goes on
G00dSh0tJans0n@reddit
A lot of people don't know that upstate South Carolina has some beautiful parts of the southern Appalachian mountains. Table mountain view is stunning, and the Foothills trail along the NC/SC border is a great 70 mile backpacking route.
Charleston is one of my favorite historic cities on the east coast. I liked it a little bit better than Savannah or St. Augustine.
V-Right_In_2-V@reddit
Just visited Savannah for the first time last week and fell in love with that city. Everyone we talked to told us that if we loved Savannah, we must go to Charleston. So that is next on our list of cities to visit
JimBeam823@reddit
Savannah is inland, planned, and better preserved.
Charleston is a modern city (with some historical homes) on a 18th century footprint and it’s on the Ashley-Cooper Estuary.
i_am_tim1@reddit
“Better preserved” in regards to Savannah vs Charleston is certainly an interesting take
Haifisch2112@reddit
I l8ve just outside of Charleston and have been to Savannah. I don't see the similarities but you m8ght still enjoy yourself.
JimBeam823@reddit
SC doesn’t have a lot of mountains, but what we have is pretty good.
Pretty Place, Caesar’s Head, Table Rock, Lake Jocassee, Lower Whitewater Falls (upper is in NC), and the Chattooga River are the highlights.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
People also don’t know it is the only place where Venus flytraps are native
bulmier@reddit
It’s actually much more prevalent in NC; their range spans over 15 counties. There’s only one county in SC within their range…
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Huh did not know that I thought it was reverse.
I e never seen them in the wild. I have seen a bunch of predatory plants like pitcher plants and honeydews in Indiana marshland but never a fly trap.

Well my learn something new every day comment has been uno reversed on me.
Save it for unrelenting positivity NC day.

North Carolina too!

If it wasn't for myrtle beach, I wouldn't exist

JimBeam823@reddit
That’s true for a lot of people.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
The dirty Myrtle. Coming through in the best way
NoContextCarl@reddit
...the state has a Buc-ees 🤷♂️
bulmier@reddit
That’s a negative.

My hands are in the air and I simply do not care
TerrapinMagus@reddit
Greenville, SC is an amazingly charming city. Highly recommend visiting for anyone in the area. The downtown is lively, walkable, and has a stunning park built around a natural waterfall with an iconic suspension foot bridge crossing it.

Seeing the 2017 total solar eclipse on a warship in Charleston harbor with my kid is one of the best memories I have.
JimBeam823@reddit
Saw it in Anderson at my kids school.
Cadicoty@reddit
I've only ever been to Myrtle Beach, which gets so much negativity, but it's fun to visit a true vacation town where the vast majority of the people you see are also there to chill. Plus the Gay Dolphin is a wonder of the 20th century.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I do not know this dolphin.
But yeah, I go to the tourist beaches once or twice a year up here in the height of tourist season. It centers me and reminds me why the Maine Tourist Exclusion Zones exist.
Shoshuaa@reddit
Vexillology nerd here.
Of all the "blue bedsheet" state flags, I think South Carolina's with the White Palmetto (not a palm tree!) with the crescent moon is one of my favorites.
mmlickme@reddit
Yeah SC has the tuffest flag
Test4Echooo@reddit
I just googled and that is a very unique and lovely flag. Nice history it has behind it as well, it appears.
SoutheastBeerTravels@reddit
It's the original. Dyed with the indigo grown on the coast
getElephantById@reddit
My grandmother met my grandfather at a Navy dance in Charleston. Thank you for my existence, South Carolina, and thank you on behalf of my mom as well.
BlazerFS231@reddit
Lived there 8 years. I miss the food something fierce, and the public land taught me so much about swamp hunting.
Vachic09@reddit
Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States.
Rishik01@reddit
I had a blast at the southern 500. Probably nicest people I’ve ever encountered as a whole
iHasMagyk@reddit
Darlington’s in the Pee Dee Region which even in SC (which I think has very nice people) has by far the nicest people I’ve encountered. Will drop what they’re doing to lend you a hand.
Rishik01@reddit
It really did blow us away. I know it's kind of silly but me and my dad went, and even though we didn't really expect anything bad to happen to us, we were slightly worried maybe people wouldn't love seeing 2 brown guys from western Washington (NASCAR's done a lot to shake that image but the perception still does exist unfortunately). Could not have been further from the truth! Great people all around
Test4Echooo@reddit
Diversity is getting better all the time, especially if you add the truck series and ARCA.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Yeah people always assume southerners don’t like brown folks. It’s not really that true these days.
nakedonmygoat@reddit
Lowcountry cuisine is to die for, and SC is the epicenter!
DropTopEWop@reddit
UGH. I GUESS I'll say something nice. lol
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Good. Just remember you’ll be up some time soon Yankee Carolina
twowrist@reddit
South of the Border is the kitshiest tourist trap on the east coast, perhaps the entire country.
Charleston is the one city in the old south I have any interest in visiting, because of what I’ve heard about its architecture and history, though I may never make it.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
South of the Border is ridiculous. I still have a mug from it somewhere.
BioDriver@reddit
Charleston has some of the best seafood I've ever had.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Not just seafood either
MiddlePop4953@reddit
Idk much about the Carolinas, but I know there's a truck that comes with produce from South Carolina a couple of times a year and I'm there to buy a crate of peaches every single time. Shit SLAPS.
OnsideKickReturn@reddit
South Carolina produces more peaches than the Peach state, Georgia. Up near Gaffney is a water tower designed in the state of a peach. It was featured in Netflix's House of Cards.
MiddlePop4953@reddit
Well the peaches deserve all that spotlight cause they're frickin delicious. Seriously, the best peaches I've ever had in my life. (And I'm not just saying that cause I got stoned and ate nearly an entire crate by myself.)
storm-000@reddit
They have a different type of barbeque sauce there that tastes phenomenal, using mustard as the base instead of ketchup. Goes great with ribs. Ive also met some really nice people from there who've helped my family out a lot.
Pauzhaan@reddit
Carolina Gold! We keep some in the fridge. Only way to eat French Fries.
bulmier@reddit
Eastern NC bbq sauce (OG) doesn’t use ketchup as a base.
makawakatakanaka@reddit
Ok?
bulmier@reddit
“Instead of ketchup” implies that this was the norm and an evolution…
AdmiralMoonshine@reddit
It is the norm. Carolina Bbq sauce is the outlier, regardless of whether it’s the OG or not.
SoutheastBeerTravels@reddit
The Carolinas is literally where bbq started
AdmiralMoonshine@reddit
And I literally mentioned that. Apologies to all Carolinians, but in our current right now time that we live in the ketchup version is what is considered the normal version. Regardless of who invented what.
storm-000@reddit
Terribly sorry to start the ketchup wars, was just excited to talk about bbq
AdmiralMoonshine@reddit
It’s ok. I knew what I was doing.
SoutheastBeerTravels@reddit
Classic rookie mistake
storm-000@reddit
At least im on the Carolina gold side
bulmier@reddit
Plenty of culinary minded people actually are concerned with tradition and provenance…
AdmiralMoonshine@reddit
Yeah, I know, I have a degree in Culinary Arts. I’m merely pointing out that if you ask for “bbq sauce” 9/10 times you’re getting the ketchup based kind. “Carolina bbq sauce” is specified that way because it’s not the regular, more frequently encountered, kind.
makawakatakanaka@reddit
Sounds more like arrogance to me
makawakatakanaka@reddit
What does NC have to do with it though?
bulmier@reddit
Whole hog pork bbq started in NC and spread. The mustard based process is a derivation.
makawakatakanaka@reddit
Ok? In a post about South Carolina why does it matter. Ketchup is the norm in general
AbiWil1996@reddit
Such an amazing variety of nature here. Some mountains at the border of NC, rivers, lakes, beaches, historic towns. We have a huge Gullah history, especially on an island off Hilton Head called Daufuskie Island. Only accessible by boat, is absolutely beautiful, and full of Gullah history & culture.
brickyard15@reddit
Can’t forget about Saint Helena for Gullah culture
dontforgettowriteme@reddit
When I was little, there was a tv show called Gullah Gullah Island, which was created by two people who wanted to celebrate and share their Gullah culture. It's always the first thing I think of whenever someone mentions St. Helena, which I suppose is a good thing!
Pauzhaan@reddit
I remember that & I really liked it.
brickyard15@reddit
I went to school with their son, he was a year younger than me and my wife had a few classes with him. I met the parents a few times at church. Great people
Fecapult@reddit
I'll always remember Carolina BBQ in New Ellenton fondly.
DustyScharole@reddit
My son just graduated from the University of South Carolina and has a job lined up. Thankful to the school for a high quality education. Spurs up! 🤙
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Congrats!
DustyScharole@reddit
Thanks! He did all the work, but I'm very proud of him.
bulmier@reddit
Out of state tuition?
DustyScharole@reddit
He used my VA benefits, so in state.
bulmier@reddit
Gotcha! My cousin’s son was considering USC, but we’re from NC so they figured it was too expensive for what it was worth. It does seem like a great value in-state.
ITrCool@reddit
- My dad was born in Greenville so he’s South Carolinian by blood
- Hilton Head is beautiful and has amazing beaches
- Charleston is an interesting city with lots to see and experience
- the camping out that way is on my to do list. Especially in the mountains
asphid_jackal@reddit
It's a good thing downtown Charleston is rather walkable, because it's best experienced on foot. Partially so you can take in the sights, and partially because it's gonna take you the same amount of time to drive there
PacSan300@reddit
I have never been to South Carolina, but I have met a few people from there, and they were all very nice and friendly. Charleston looks like a lovely city, and I would definitely like to visit it someday,
rollerfedora@reddit
Always happy to be in SC after driving through Georgia
Building_a_life@reddit
Except for the road. To put it positively, South Carolina has such nicely vintage roadways.
iowaman79@reddit
South Carolina gave us Marshall Tucker Band and Hootie and the Blowfish, ‘nuff said
GinX-@reddit
My fave place in the world was a private cabin on the South end of Hunting Island. We could go for a week and not see another living soul. It's all gone now...taken by the sea.
gator_mckluskie@reddit
we love living in upstate south carolina. weather is great, food is great, people and great, and one of the rare states that’s still building housing.
there’s so much to do as well, easy day trip to both the mountains and the beach, big cities like CLT and ATL. 10/10 would recommend!
BusinessWarthog6@reddit
No hate here, love SC. They are home to the real USC. Also, have some great musicians and athletes come from the state
yescaman@reddit
marchmay@reddit
Rocking chairs at the Columbia airport. Adorable. I went to college in SC and that's all I can think of.
thats-gold-jerry@reddit
Charleston is a gem.
AlphabetizedName@reddit
I’m on my way home from SC as we speak. It’s the only place I want my ashes spread, over the salt marshes and oyster beds, the quiet beaches of Edisto Island, the sandy soil and Spanish Moss hanging from the Oak trees making a canopy over the road. The lowcountry is a magical place
brickyard15@reddit
I really like seeing someone from up this way actually go to the low country instead of just going to myrtle
TokyoDrifblim@reddit
Hey that's me! I've never seen anything nice said about my home state 😭 thanks fam
AZJHawk@reddit
I saw an alligator on Hilton Head Island. That was pretty cool.
AdmiralMoonshine@reddit
I have a cousin named Hilton because he was conceived there. Not much to say other than I always thought that was kind of odd.
claudiatiedemann@reddit
My grandfather was from Oconee County, SC, an absolutely beautiful place. It’s also got mountains, lakes, and waterfalls. On the other side of the state I had family in the Charleston area - a lovely historic city near beautiful beaches.
Tacoshortage@reddit
South Carolina has easily some of the most scenic driving I have ever seen in the U.S. or Europe and I have travelled a lot.
melodyangel113@reddit
I’ve never been but I had a friend who would go down for the summer when we were younger. She’d come home with so many stories and pictures and trinkets for our teachers. Every time NC comes up somehow, I think of her even though we don’t talk anymore :)
Duck_Diddler@reddit
FISHING SEASON starts for me this weekend. Super excited.
SC is a great place to be, especially if you love being outside and can take the heat.
makawakatakanaka@reddit
SC has the gray man ghost. He appears on the beach before hurricanes as a warning, and it’s said if you see him you and your house will make it through the storm

"Too small to be it's own country, too large to be an insane asylum".
I say that with love for this beautiful and diverse state. Enjoy a meat + three for me!
