A sea drone that was found in Lefkada, a Greek island in the Ionia sea, was confirmed to be Ukrainian. According to reports, the Greek government believes that Ukraine tried to target ships "carrying Russian oil" - Do you consider this acceptable?

MaestroAce7@reddit
Nope, i don't think this was the intention. Drones go out of control often, after that most likely it drifted toward the island
Greek_Bodybuilder995@reddit
If it is Ukraine then this is unacceptable and it must have consequences for Ukraine‘s EU membership ambitions a minima.
However, no one can really tell if it this is indeed an SBU asset primed to attack shadow fleet vessels on the Mediterranean, or if this is actually a GRU false flag designed to anger the Greeks, 55% of whom actually support Russia. Already the Ukrainian state is claiming that this is not a Megura.
And unfortunately, whether it’s actually Ukrainian or Russian, the damage is already done.
stonecuttercolorado@reddit
why do Greeks support russia?
IssaMuffin@reddit
Cultural ties, historical friendship, not a proxy of the US.
RestaurantBoring417@reddit
"Is Ukraine allowed to target ships belonging to the country that has illegally invaded them and stole their territory?" Yes, I think they should do that, as long as they don't damage any neutral ships.
I mean Russia uses every dirty trick they know to fight this war, but when Ukraine does it people are mad?
IssaMuffin@reddit
If you operate in foreign waters you make said country complicit in the attack. Greece isn’t in war with Russia so we have to ensure that their civilian ships(tankers are not military targets) are not hit in our waters.
Inside_Marketing268@reddit
Why not? It would be not a Greek problem, if some Russian ships would be sunk in neutral waters
IssaMuffin@reddit
When it operates through Greek waters it makes you complicit and open to be attacked. This is a matter of national security, we’ve helped the slavic Israel enough.
Pdishhhh@reddit
The artificial wars that are currently underway are needed by backstage governments to devalue the US national debt.
viltak@reddit
It’s not acceptable here in Greece. What if they hit a ship and sank?
Sigma-Tau@reddit
It won't.
The fuse is activated manually, so it's just a fishing boat sized obstacle at that point.
viltak@reddit
Artic Metagaz is an uncontrolled environmental bomb in Mediterranean do you think this have anything to do about how the fuse is activated?

tiga_94@reddit
I dont think the detonator fuse is disabled until manually set to by a remote command, if they lost control - it's just free military tech and free 100kg of explosives for whoever finds it
well there could be some measures like it exploding on attempted disassembly but I'm sure Ukraine will help with that
and then when there is no detonator or it's not set - you can do this with tons of explosives: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/auSKjPMpv3k
FantasticQuartet@reddit
Bad move from Ukraine. I support them generally speaking, but you can't just explode things in other countries. I believe this will hurt our relations.

Several-Zombies6547@reddit
It's not something unprecedented. Ukraine was responsible for blewing up Nord Stream. Ukrainian drones in March entered the Baltics and Finland, again without any approval. Honestly, they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it, just because they are the victim in this war.
captaingrabma@reddit
You would have done the same if it happened to your country. Okay blowing up the nordstream was guestionable. But it was literally funding Russia’s war machine. So what do you do when you want to stop a country from invading you? You drag it down untill, that country is forced to stop. And that is exactly what Ukraine is doing.
We (all of europe) are just not doing enough to help Ukraine. Ofcourse we are atleast helping them, unlike the US traitors. But we should an need to do more. We will talk about these incidents later with Ukraine. Now is not the time, they have their hands full on handling Russia and getting them out.
Ok_Tie_7564@reddit
Oh yes, they should.
OkTry9715@reddit
Russian drones also entered multiple European coutnires including flying to centeal Poland and what did excrly happen to Russia? Nothing.
greenest_alien@reddit
Their drones enter Baltics because they get spoofed and sent there by Russia which manipulates their navigation.
This is just a case of drones going astray. If it bothers you, push Russia to stop the war, not Ukraine to stop defending itself.
AccomplishedFront526@reddit
The best defense is an attack on the merchant shipping. Almost no casualties and big material damage.
Open-Investigator-52@reddit
Until the attacked one decides its time to hit where it hurts.
critical-insight@reddit
Ukrain is the attacked one
Minute_Connection_62@reddit
Which is their right... If Russia owns anything or even a small part of something that Russia benefits from making money with that'll further Russia's goal then yeah that is a legitimate target that Ukraine will/should hit
Kmag_supporter@reddit
Stfu.
captaingrabma@reddit
Well they did not do this on purpose, they lost control and it accidentally hit Greece. Because first if all. Why would they hit an ally in the first place? They have their hands full on Russia. So they try to hurt them where ever they can.
And second, Ukraine is doing everything it can to stop Russia from invading their land. If we (all of Europe) do not want this to happen again then we should ramp up our support for Ukraine. As long as we do not do this, we risk that the war might spread to other surrounding countries.
Don't wait with extinguishing the fire untill it reached your territory. Extinguish it, before it hits your territory.
trapsl@reddit
I could see them doing it on purpose. Greek ship owners, with strong ties to the government, are responsible for transferring oil ever since the war started, with great benefit to their pockets. But it is extreme as a move to do it in greek space and not international waters.
Useless_or_inept@reddit
They usually target the empty tankers heading towards Russia. It's visible on some of the footage of drone attacks - the ships are very high in the water, and they aim for the propeller/rudder area
Minute_Connection_62@reddit
Which is better, you know cause we don't have to deal with thousands of Tons of crude oil being engulfed by the ocean.
Certain-Use-2149@reddit
So only few hundred are OK? You know that every such ship still carry a lot of fuel, lubricants, dirty water in the tanks?
CocoonNapper@reddit
Sea mines were floating into the Bulgarian sea space - it's just the consequence of war that's close by. All not good, but again, what do we really expect?

Ukraine knows very well not to strike Greek oil tankers in the Mediterranean.
They do it easily in Novorossiysk 🤗
Blindeafmuten@reddit
It's not about striking Greek tankers. It's about sinking any tanker near Greek shores.
oblivion_mike@reddit
Well, in all fairness they did struck a Greek tanker a few days ago, near a Russian port on the Black Sea. Greeks were already discombobulated about that ‘incident’. Ukraine will have to do what it takes to “sanction” Russian oil 🇺🇦👌
Blindeafmuten@reddit
The damage of striking a Greek tanker on the Black Sea is much lower than striking a Russian tanker in the Mediterranean.

Still illegal to operate in foreign waters without consent, especially when Ukraine is being playing favorites concerning the USV production in Greece. Meaning, the ban on using said USV drones against Turkey, if war brakes out, hopefully not.
polenta2025@reddit
It's a war in Europe, things like that are expected to happen. Greece is not an isolated island on the other end of the world.
harrythegreek@reddit
Ukraine ain't Europe and never will be. Grow up.
Several-Zombies6547@reddit
Is Ukraine trying to speedrun ruining relations with Greece? Some days ago there were news of stalled negotiations regarding the joint production of USVs, because Ukraine demanded having the right to authorize how these drones are used by Greece. Now, a Ukrainian USV with 300kg of explosives was randomly discovered in a touristic Greek island.
RestaurantBoring417@reddit
Well if Greece wants to keep trading with Russia, which helps financing their war in Ukraine, I can understand why Ukrainians would want to take matters into their own hands, it's not your people who die everyday thanks to Russian bombs.
And it wouldn't be the first time in the last 40 years that Greece chose the wrong side in an European conflict (*cough* Serbia *cough*)
InfelicitousRedditor@reddit
Depends, either that or someone is changing the narrative or trying to spark dissent. Why would you even hear about the stalled negotiations for example. The rhetoric is a bit odd. It's interesting either way, but still.
konschrys@reddit
I mean you hear about stalled negotiations between Greece and Cyprus on energy matters too. That doesn’t necessarily mean someone is trying to change the narrative. It’s coup be just reporting. I am not denying the plausibility of that however.

Targeting civilian ships is a war crime
OriginalMexican@reddit
Targeting civilian ships and infrastructure that do not have a proper millitart goal - is a crime. Targeting civilian ships and infrustructure that aid military war efforts directly - is not a crime.
Ship full tourists or selling spices - no bueno.
Ship going to re-fuel military - bueno.
Not sure what this one was or was not targeting.
SatisfactionSpecial2@reddit
Russia is selling oil not buying, thus it is a merchant ship.
OriginalMexican@reddit
Assuming that this drone is in fact Ukranian, I could not possibly know (and neither could you) what it was supposed to target. If a drone it was in fact to target a merchant ship that was no refueling millitary - that would have been a war crime.
By this (your) definition of a war crime being commited by targeting oil tankers of enemy nation (which mind you I am not oposed to) US has been consistently and systematically carrying out war crimes, is that something we can agree on?

SatisfactionSpecial2@reddit
I don't know what it was supposed to target, but I am not foolish enough to believe Russia is refueling their military by sending oil ships anywhere close to Greece. What I do know, is that there are oil tankers that ignore the trade sanctions to buy oil from Russia. However those sanctions aren't giving Ukraine any green light to be attacking them, So, IF it is like that, then it is a war crime, which is something a lot of people here seem to be very ok with.
US are well known war criminals, nothing new here, I don't even need to see the links to know that

This is why Ukrainian should get more support. They are fighting a war by necessity, and then mistakes can happen yes. But it is trying to get Russian troops of their land in the first place. And if we do not want to war to spread we should stop Putin in Ukraine. So shut up and help Ukraine. If Russia leaves Ukrainian territory, there will also be no war. It is as simple as that.
SOHONEYSAME@reddit (OP)

captaingrabma@reddit
Have you ever looked into Russia how they keep violating and keep breaking deals. You can’t make a deal with Putin. He has continued to keep ignoring reasonable peace deals from Ukraine. He just wants a peace deal, so damn weak that he can come back within 5 years and try to capture Ukraine again.
Putin needs to be put on the knees and be begging for any deal. Or he needs to be defeated. Otherwise Ukraine should continue their fight with our help.
Let’s not forget that Ukraine is fighting for its own freedom and existence. If Greece was invaded by Turkey and i said to you “yeah you just need to give up and make a peace deal with Erdogan. So he kinda gets what he wants so we can live in peace”.
Im sure you would have given me middle finger. Bullies will come back for your lunch money, if you are not willing to fight for it.

" Could you do a quick comparison of how much did the 2022 crisis initiated by Russia cost Greece and how much is it costing Greece, against price of those flight hours? "
Elaborate, what did it cost Greece exactly?
greenest_alien@reddit
For example it cost Greece additional energy expenses and losses from foreign investments, exports, loss of tourism etc., all also causing inflation to spoje up from usual 5% and below to 11%.
That is thousands of firefighting airplanes Greece could have bought and thousands of firefighters Greece could have bought for itself, but lost instead to Russian aggression.
Capable_Studio_6631@reddit
I'm sorry for doing this to you but your comments are very generic, which only leads to more questions.
First off, I don't get how you attribute the War to Greece's economy. Energy? That's the EU's decision to impose sanctions and spike up the prices.
Tourism from where? Investment from who and for what?
When discussing such matters you have to separate direct from indirect factors.
"That is thousands of firefighting airplanes" One such airplane costs 30 million to make, in addition to having the knowhow for and cost of maintenance.
greenest_alien@reddit
Well no, Russia started throttling gas supplies already in 2021 in preparation for war, then in 2022 disconnected Poland and other countries like Bulgaria from gas supplies, driving up your own costs, because if decrease in supply in Europe.
https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/gazprom-says-it-halts-gas-supplies-poland-bulgaria-payments-row-2022-04-27/
Tourism and investments from other countries to Greece, and exports from Greece to other coubtries took a hit too, because Russia caused a disruption to world economy by its aggression. Other countries became poorer, so Greece became poorer. By cutting energies, by destroying factories in Ukraine, by burning fields and sending workers in the run, world economy was affected and Greek economy was affected. Such as evidenced by Greek inflation rate.
You can just look at Greek economy and it's experience in 2022 yourself and then try to tell me all the negative indicators are just a complete coincidence. Otherwise, this is ALL result of Russian aggression.
Now compare this to price of the flight hours they generously donated to you while murdering people.

FatherMozgus@reddit
It is actually a pretty common belief in Greece especially in religious and conservative circles that Russia is the big brother saviour country that will decimate Turkey and take Constantinople and gift it to Greece. Why? Because prophecies and Orthodox. All of it Russian propaganda. So yes a lot of Greeks unironically believe they are special in Russia’s eyes and the bad guys are in the US, Middle East and Europe.
SOHONEYSAME@reddit (OP)

greenest_alien@reddit
If only they could grasp the reality of Mariupol whose people the russians kept calling brothers for so long.
FatherMozgus@reddit
That didn’t happen it’s propaganda and if it did happen it’s because the Ukrainians are Nazis or puppets of the West or whatever or the Russians tried to avoid it and only did it because they had to. And moreover the Greeks are not Ukrainians and they are far more special and important. There you go.
LibertyChecked28@reddit
Why they should cut Ukraine some slack regarding a case where Ukraine clearly ″behaves like Russia″ against Greece?
EverydayNormalGrEEk@reddit
Cut some slack until when? Should we wait unti innocent people are killed or even then the slack should be cut?
Should we expect Ukraine to act like an actual allly and inform about military moves in our waters or is it too much because we don't have the moral high ground?
tiga_94@reddit
they probably lost control of it far away from Greece waters, like somewhere around Libya where Ukraine is reported to have a base for these exact drones, and then lost control and wind and streams and waves pushed it to Greece
then it's unlikely to be activated, so detonator won't go off on impact, there is a tiny chance that it was lost after they saw an enemy target and activated the fuze then it is dangerous, but if it was the case it would've already exploded when hitting the shore and it would be a much-much bigger deal lol

Almost upvoted until I saw the last sentence.

There is a saying in Turkish: Those who fall in the sea, clings on to the snakes.
They are in a bad situation and doing everything to protect their country.
Your Zelensky comment is laughable. They are in war.
pitogyros@reddit
The incident is really bad indeed , but let’s be honest and see it from Ukraine POV , they are defending their country with any means necessary , it’s not like our countries wouldn’t have done the same if we were in Ukraine’s spot
RiverNo6782@reddit
sure thing vlad
konschrys@reddit
Ukraine very well knows that its greatest allies rely on Russian oil. What exactly are they trying to achieve here?
mihor@reddit
Ukraine is a terrorist state.

Yes it's extremely acceptable for ukraine to hit and sink russian oil carrying ships, because russia needs to be taught a goddamn lesson
WayAdmirable150@reddit
Its unacceptable that the drone did not reaches the target. We should give it back to Ukraine to try again.
Ourtimehascome2485@reddit
Nah, this drone was godsend after the stalled negotiations with Ukraine for exactly this kind of hardware, they are not even hiding that they will reverse engineer the shit out of it.
pitogyros@reddit
So I am pulling this out of my ass but here is my guess
It’s the type of drones Greece and Ukraine agreed to produce together , suddenly Ukraine added a term that they get to decide where this drone can be used , and they didn’t want Greece to use it in potential conflict with Turkey , so it doesn’t harm the Turkish / Ukraine relations as Turkey is a big supporter of Ukraine.
The fully armed and ready drone now suddenly is on Greek hands , ready to be reversed engineered so technically Ukraine didn’t give it to Greece willingly but wanted Greece to capture it.
This sounds like sci-fi theory but I guess it could ( partly ?? ) make sense.
Interesting_Fig_7484@reddit
If thats true then Ukraine has the worst PR programme in history. They would never allow public opinion to be this bad in an EU country while they are waiting for funding to be given out to them. That means they are placing the importance of Greece having these sea drones to go on a hypothetical war against Turkey over their own war against Russia currently ongoing
alkorisno@reddit
Greece is a war zone now. Russia might attack it becuase they clearly let the drone enter their territory
Hot-nugget2@reddit
Ukraine is going to cause ww3 . Which is their goal to involve NATO

I don’t want to sound dumb here but what is a sea drone
Zealousideal_Cry_460@reddit
What do u think it is?
Minute_Connection_62@reddit
This is sea drone, what u thinking?
Square-Grass3468@reddit
just a small boat that is a drone that is used to target ships, goes big boom if it hits something.
Imperator_Gr@reddit
A remote controlled boat with explosives.
Arstanishe@reddit
i mean, sure, the Ukrainians are caught, the drone is confiscated... but surely it won't stop until the war stops?
Every enemy ship is a viable target in a war, and no amount of saying "it's not by the rules" won't fix it
StudySpecial@reddit
lefkada is not anywhere near shipping channels where russian ships may be
this is a small port mainly used by tourist boats on the western coast of greece towards italy
it's quite right that greece is making an issue out of this, it's completely unacceptable
Arstanishe@reddit
lefkada is probably a hiding place. those drones can go hundreds of kilometres in any direction.
And yeah, obviously Greece needs to take action. But I'd still support sunking of ruzzian ships, especially if they carry nuclear reactor components for NK, stolen goods, weapons, etc
AccomplishedFront526@reddit
Britain disagreed with that statement during WW2…
Arstanishe@reddit
And yet civilian ships sunk so much during the war
tiga_94@reddit
I am sure Greece will force Ukraine to at least tell them detailed info on strikes at ships from Libya, especially when a drone control was lost, or else they will threaten to stop participating in various weapon supply programs
Gloomy-Access1704@reddit
In this case, Kyiv said it had no information on the drone. "There is no evidence that it belongs to Ukrainian operators of maritime drones. We are open to cooperation with the Greek side to clarify the circumstances of the incident, if there are relevant requests from them," Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson of the Ukrainian foreign ministry, told reporters on Tuesday.

Ukrainians are POS, same if not worse than Russians.

I think a lot of people don't understand how impossible it is for this Drone to just appear in Lefkada from the Black Sea.
Open a google map and check where Ukraine is vs Lefkada. It would have to have gone through the Bosphorus, Dardanelles, sailed the whole Aegean sea, around the Peloponnisos to Lefkada.
You mean to tell me both the Turkish and the Greek navies and all the Island radars and bases along the way couldn't detect it, if it came from the Black sea??
VisibleReport5008@reddit
it is suspected to come from libya.
Capable_Studio_6631@reddit
That makes a lot more sense. In previous news posts I had seen people mentioning the Black Sea which is why I wrote this.
KaptanArkaKapi1@reddit
How the fuck did it end up there tho? like they need to be carried to vicinity SOMEHOW .
AntiKouk@reddit
Safe to say there must be an unmarked civilian "mothership" in the Mediterranean
tiga_94@reddit
why make things up when this been reported multiple times before? https://english.elpais.com/international/2026-04-10/ukrainian-army-lands-in-the-mediterranean-to-target-russian-phantom-fleet.html
it was launched in Libya and lost signal, not dangerous until the detonator is activated, which is only done when the target is visible, hence it didn't explode on impact with the shore
AntiKouk@reddit
My apologies, I had not come across this in any of the news I read about it so I made assumptions. Thanks for the input! Very interesting
LibertyChecked28@reddit
They could have entered Greece by land via trucks or vans, or even utilize foreign infrastructure.

No, a sea drone, like thre one in the photo.
Junior_Trifle_8273@reddit
I think this will continue until Russia stops its aggression. Ukraine will destroy anything Russian all around the world. Examples are what’s happening in the Mediterranean Sea, African countries, and the Baltic region. Until the war ends, they will keep destroying everything Russian in every corner of the world, and that’s normal
StunningComment6064@reddit
Awesome will they strike China and USA as well?
