Can someone explain how these transmissions work? I've watched some vids of these drag races and they can shift so much faster than a non-synchronized transmission should be able
I drive a regular semi, I, and most other drivers, can float and shift very quickly. I didn't know exactly what they're doing here, but I would imagine they're doing that. I don't double clutch unless I have to but I can do that very quickly as well, just takes practice.
I float gears too, but if you watch interior vids of these guys, they are slamming the absolute shit out of these gears, not timing it like how you or I would do. I actually watched a couple videos about this after I posted, many use drag race specific 5 speeds, and some use Lenco transmissions with separate levers for each gear, similar to what Top Fuel dragsters use
Those transmissions don't last long. So no need to be gentle with it. They basically just ram the gears in place with no care for grinding down the gears. Pretty much just like regular dragsters, the whole engine and transmission gets rebuilt after every race or race event.
I would LOVE to see a steam engine at a tractor pull in person. They put wood chips into the fire so sparks come pouring out of the smoke stack. Looks like a heck of a show
I mean, I’m not around trucks all day and we don’t get them - even not drag modified - like that over here in England … but that’s kind of cool, to be honest. Torque is fun and that sound is awesome.
Came here for this ^^... way too much can break under those torque loads and no way reaction time saves you from a hot oil bath if the reciprocating bits decide to exit!
That's a little bit far fetched isn't it? I'm not into racing of any sort, but I can see a gearhead's attraction to optimizing and pushing a machine to it's limit. Are truck races doing any more damage than... I dunno... everything behind someone playing video games, watching a football game on t.v., or (insert hobby here)?
Jesus how the fuck is that fun to watch - racing i get, but this is some genuine cretin level redneck shit just putting black smoke in the sky for no reason lmao

Pure cancer coming out of those stacks.

I don't think top fuel use transmissions. Big ol clutch pack and 1:1.
SamuraiJono@reddit
Correct, it just slips like crazy for most of the travel iirc

It depends on the truck too. I had an old ten speed freightliner that gave absolutely no fucks about the rpm when you switched. Maybe it's like that?
random_bruce@reddit
Also if they have an 18 speed when you split gears you don't touch the clutch either
Longhaul-shortbus@reddit
It had so much torque it almost twisted the chassis coming off the line.

Barely kept her on the track.

The excessive does lead to partial and unburn fuel
