It's been a minute since we've had a Go Daddy/NetSol bashing thread... Who is your current go to registrar/dns host?

> Who is your current go to registrar/dns host? I'm using Route53 for both personal and corporate registration\* and DNS hosting. \* when supported. Our .coop domains are registered with EnCirca.

We're a Go Daddy shop... I'm fixing to move my personal stuff, but will recommend that we move the corporate/reseller domains if the process and cost savings is enough to pique the interests of the decision makers. I'll probably end up doing it so hopefully it's an easy process... 100+ accounts i think

Register4Less.com for almost 20 years, it's been a great value for my use, my three domains are paid until 2028.

How have they not updated their site in 20 years...

Same here. I've been using R4L since the days of their User Friendly comics affiliation. If it's good enough for the Dust Puppy, it's good enough for me.

Route53 registrar. It's trustworthy and *likely* to stick around without enshittification and outrageous pricing.

Ok... I shall be a bit more specific. It doesn't offer any European top level domains.

We've got .eu, .uk, .de, .nl, .am... We're working on adding others like .fr, .it, .se, .no, .ch, and .be plus more. ccTLDs are a bit of a pain in the bun unfortunately as each one has its own unique quirks, but we're slowly chipping away at them.

publicdomainadmin@reddit

Idk. They are pretty no nonsense, their domain finder is easy to use, their support responds in a good turnaround time, UI is nice to work with on their site (not too fancy, no multipage portals or hack together overlay things like Godaddy or NetworkSolutions). I've never really had an issue in the 10 years with them aside from self inflicted pain.
View on Reddit #85857710

Ferman@reddit

The timing of your question couldn't be better. I'm in the same boat. MSP manages our domains which has always felt bad to me and I've contemplated who to move too. Porkbun is a weird name for b2b but I think it'll be worth switching to in the long run.

I was looking at NameCheap because that's the only one I could remember this morning. Do you know if either has an affiliate/reseller program like Go Daddy?
View on Reddit #85856058

dartdoug@reddit

We are a registered reseller with Namecheap. We get a discount on products across the board. I maintain a running balance with them. Every time we make a purchase the cost is deducted from the balance. When the funds run out I replenish with another $ 100. We've been purchasing domains and getting Comdo SSL certificates through them for almost 10 years. All DNS is at Cloudflare.

StrongWind1@reddit

Namecheap support is not great, the hide lots of settings behind their own opaque names (see: https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/767/10/how-to-change-dns-for-a-domain/), and generally do the awful bait and switch with renewal fees. I used porkbun on a whim and the interface is extremely clean, uses official DNS language and allows for mass changes. Also has all the standard security options (besides SSO but it does have invite other users) you expect including passkey/webauthn support and MFA. Compare the changing nameserver process with this article: https://kb.porkbun.com/article/22-how-to-change-nameservers Also you can see the layout of their single page domain portal there.

View on Reddit #85874420

katerleonid@reddit

I don’t know about Namecheap, but the domain registrar I work for has an affiliate program, as well as a reseller program with API + MCP access.
View on Reddit #85861019

Ferman@reddit

Ah... I think namecheap definitely does. Both have delegated permissions for accounts. If you're concerned about DNS you should move their nameservers to AWS or Cloudflare so you can manage their DNS without them messing it up.

Route53 for registrar and DNS, Godaddy for the rare TLD AWS doesn't do.

View on Reddit #85856686

I haven't used Network Solutions since 2003, I still get spammed at the address I gave them. I have a procmail filter that just deletes anything to that address after incrementing a counter. It resets on the first day of every month, it's at 18 messages today. They sold my email to everyone. FNS.

View on Reddit #85855053

jamesaepp@reddit

For my personal domains I used to use Namecheap for no other reason than a friend recommended them. Then one time (years ago now, details are foggy) I went to top up my account. IIRC they took $40 USD from my payment method but only credited the account $40 CAD. Support was useless and it was a huge pain to undo that transaction, so I moved to another registrar, but I'm not sure I'd recommend them either.

I use GoDaddy but hear me out, if I didn't use them they wouldn't stay open and we wouldn't have something to bitch about.
View on Reddit #85863781

anonymousITCoward@reddit (OP)

We're currently a Go Daddy shop, I'm looking to off load our clients to something else, so an affiliate/reseller program would be super nice. It's not so much about the service or the quality of the product, both have been pretty decent through the years, only one issue stands out in my head... but we're looking to reduce the over head.
View on Reddit #85870163

jamesaepp@reddit

I'm still waiting for some vendor to come out of the woods with an affordable quorum-based account and domain management system. Inb4 "use devops" yeah that's great but it doesn't help you avoid multiple admins essentially having "god mode" access to the domain. Call it paranoia, but I'd really like if major changes to a domain (contacts, nameservers, any records at the apex, etc.) had to go through a voting system. That goes for everything. Account setup, account changes, account renewals, billing changes/setup, everything.

BrandSight (GoDaddy Corp Domains). They’re awesome if you have an actual portfolio of domains (100+)
View on Reddit #85869115

KandevDev@reddit

porkbun for personal stuff, prices are honest and the UI is sane. cloudflare for anything that is already going through cloudflare DNS anyway, no markup, transfer is one click. avoided godaddy since they tried to upsell me a "premium privacy" addon that has been free everywhere else for like 5 years. namecheap was fine until their support stopped being responsive around 2023.
View on Reddit #85865824

itguy9013@reddit

EasyDNS. I like Cloudflare but they seem to care about CIRA, and EasyDNS is decent to deal with.
View on Reddit #85864341

I work for a domain registrar, so I may not be fully objective. But my suggestion, if you want to buy domains, is to check websites that compare prices first. That would be my first step if I were buying a domain name today.
View on Reddit #85857426

anonymousITCoward@reddit (OP)

I don't care about your objectivity, so if you want to throw your hat in the ring go a head... I mean I asked for it... and the whole reason I asked is to find out what other people used so I can go shop around... sometimes the cheapest isn't the good option... I just read about a "discount" registrar that went under and some people lost their domains and are currently doing battle with internic to reclaim their domains.

Realistically everyone should be using different registrars so we don’t have one provider with everything soooo
View on Reddit #85857424

katerleonid@reddit

That’s correct. Each client will choose the registrar they feel is right for them and stay there if it’s easy to work with.
View on Reddit #85858097

iratesysadmin@reddit

We also use cloudflare, but the one thing I hate is that you have to use their DNS. We would use their DNS anyways, but the lack of choice / ability to change nameservers if I need to is something I don't like. The pricing, lack of issues, and other drama is great though. We don't use their proxy features (except is rare cases) and really only use the register and dns hosting.

Grizzalbee@reddit

GoDaddy Corporate Domains / Brandsight. Do not confuse GoDaddy and GCD. GCD is a separate registrar that GoDaddy bought that's made for enterprise. It's spendy, domain regs are more than normal, and there's a platform fee to use it. But hands down it's the best thing I've ever used to manage hundreds of domains, went from a few days a month fighting with the standard GoDaddy stuff to maybe 5 minutes a month to go make sure the reporting didn't somehow miss something.
