Moving to Asia and living here for 5+ years (here's what I've learned)

I left Canada back in November 2021 and moved to Southeast Asia, had enough of the cold Winter, the average 9 to 5 life I had and just wanted to travel and explore SEA. I was looking for something that my hometown Montreal didn't have, I won't be going into the details of my personal life.
I decided to leave specifically after the pandemic, it was my last sign that I needed to say to myself, "let's do this!". The pandemic was really hard for me mentally, I had to shut down my business and a few other things that really made me feel really bad about my life situation.
One thing led to another and here I am in SEA, I prepared for 1 and a half year before booking that one-way ticket to SEA. Sold everything and left.
Now there are many things that happened to me mentally, first month I felt really sad and broke down after my niece sent me a GIF image saying that I was the best uncle in the world. I bought her a paid of airpods and she was so happy I could tell as she added them in the GIF. I literally broke down and started crying, even now I'm tearing up writing this. (This was major emotionally)
I've met many people to say the least, culture in SEA is really different from Canadian culture, people here are a lot more communal. Community, family and religion plays a huge role in the daily lives of people here.
Food is still making me sick, especially street food, last time I was on a ferry and I got one one of the worst stomach pain in my life after eating rice and chicken, vomited dozens of times in a few hours, I thought I was about to die, thank God I didn't. lol
Now I'm married and got a kid here, which are things I could've never imagined a few years ago. Crazy how life goes.
So what I've learned after living in SEA for +5 Years:
Regardless of where you live, you will face problems, issues and challenges, I've faced quite a few challenges here in SEA, one specifically that really had me stressing related to immigration and paperwork. (As you know, sometimes paperwork/bureaucracy/corruption here in Asia is quite complicated sometimes IYKYK)
If you're leaving the West to espace problems, just remember that you will face problems wherever you decide to relocate to.
And this is something I've only realized after moving here.
I just went back to Montreal not long ago, and couldn't wait to move back to Asia, I'm at a point where I can really say that Asia is my new home.
Have a nice day. ❤️🏝️
(Another thing I want to add - there's no cr*ck here unlike Canada, which is a good thing lol)

Interesting bc I hate living in Indonesia and I'm happier living in the US now

OP probably has money and if something goes wrong, he can always come back to his first world country. its a different story when youre a native struggling to get by and without any support you can fall back to
canescensxc034@reddit
Yes that is true, but I was referring to the culture and drugs things he was talking about. I like the people there, but I'm tired of people never mind other people's business there in general. Like you literally almost have no privacy, social judgment is really high over there.
Apart_Flounder_6145@reddit
Asia can be hard depending on your social status.
mjratchada@reddit
It is a lot harder for poor people. Arguably, the middle class in SEA have things good apart from the political situations.

This! Lol.

There is no best place to live ..
All places that have great things about them and bad things.
What you consider a positive and makes it the best now will change . Why ? Because life changes , your needs change , what be have the best laid back location may not have the best school system. If you don’t have kids not problem ,but if you have young kids it won’t be the best anymore .
Some places are great for having fun ,some are great for building a family.
It’s all relative- it all changes based on where you are in your life journey . The joy is always in the new place , the new experiences. Once you move behind that it just gets to be the same.. and anything is repetitive becomes w boring .
The joy is in the newness and the exploration. It’s not at any destination

Idk about the drugs. Might be more widespread in the party areas than you think.

Yeah, I think so too since I'm not in that space.

Ive been living in Aus for 16 years and planning to move back soon within a year back to my home in Indonesia. Loneliness here is awful to the point where it's affecrting me mentally. I cant wait to get back to the more communal culture of Indonesia.

Glad to hear it's working out for you.
Which country in SEA are you living in? It's weird to read advice about a non-specific country. There are a lot of countries in SEA, with different cultures, governments, and societies.
True. The drugs of choice in SEA are Meth (including versions with caffeine added), Heroin (and other opioids), and Ketamine is becoming popular.
al_tanwir@reddit (OP)
True lol, Indonesia.

What part of Indonesia are you living in?
I've only been to Bali, but I'm curious how much more prevalent Islamic culture is in other parts of Indonesia. Personally I would have a hard time living in a non-secular culture.
al_tanwir@reddit (OP)
It is more Islamic in other regions, I'm Muslim so I don't mind it.

I have lived in the Philippines since 2012. I will live nowhere.

“Theres no crack here” is such a naive statement. Rock cocaine may not be a popular drug locally where you are but there are certainly other types of drugs other type of societal issues that are likely as bad if not worse than Canada. Also why would you edit the word crack? Are you 5?
As for the stomach thing Thats weird. I moved from US to VN 10 years ago and I think I’ve gotten sick twice in all that time (food related illness that is). Hard to imagine 5 years and still struggling with local food.
