9800X3D hitting 96°C at only 95W is this normal?

800X3D + 3080 Ti gaming temps
Looking for opinions before I tear my system apart played Battlefield 6 for a few minutes logged HWiNFO the whole time,The heat coming out of the case feels like standing next to a wood fire
CPU (9800X3D, stock):
- Tctl/Tdie: avg 95C, max 96C
- CCD1: avg 93.6C, max 97.2C
- Package power: \~95W avg
- CPU usage: \~50%
- Thermal Limit %: pinned at 98–100% the whole session
GPU (RTX 3080 Ti):
- Core: 65–72C
- Hotspot: max 94.8C
- Memory junction: max 86C
- 290W, fan at \~80
Is this normal?
KastVaek700@reddit
Although I didn't reach your temps, I had to undervolt my 7800x3d to avoid it running amuck. I just set it to use 99% power, and all issues with heat disappeared. It's like it was trying everything it could to use as much power as possible before I did that.
djhughes94@reddit
If you have an AIO cooler, make sure it’s set to run at 100% all the time, not adaptive etc.
Impossible-Move-2096@reddit
96°C at 95W sounds spicy 🔥 check cooler mount or paste spread before tearing it apart.
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
Remove the plastic film from cpu cooler
The cpu cooler is mounted wrong
Or the cpu cooler straight up is broken
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
am hoping that the got who build the pc used his 10 yr's of exp to build it or he fucked it up
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
No matter how experienced you are you can always fuck up
langley10@reddit
Yup that plastic film is an all levels gotcha mistake.
XGreenDirtX@reddit
Last year I build my fathers PC, it was the 12th pc I built in 1,5 year time. It held a record time of 25 minutes to build, including Windows install. After a week or so I was sitting on the couch calmly when the sudden scare got me up feeling like I forgot to take off the film. It kept me awake that night.
Next day I went over to my parents place, weaponed with some isopropyl, to check. I didn't forget to take it off, I did, as always. But even after all those builds I suddendly felt like I couldve made such a rookie mistake.
Ditto_is_Lit@reddit
Trying to build a gaming PC in record time is a fools errand. PC building isn't a race it's a marathon. There's no way you're going to build a good gaming PC in 25 mins with cable management proper testing etc. unless it's a basic vanilla workstation.
I don't see any practical reason to try and rush a build when you can do a good job with tidy cable routing etc. I've been building PC's for +20 years fyi.
XGreenDirtX@reddit
I was not trying to build it in record time. The cables were all sleeved and the entire PC works as intended. No mistakes were made, I just didn't remember if I took off the film.
I didn't rush, it just went crazy fast. I've been building for over 20 years myself too and like I said had a lot of builds in that year alone. Because of that my muscle memory went crazy while building and it just went flawless.
I didn't calculate the proper testing in the 25 minutes. Been doing that, the day after and took my time for it. I also didn't notice any temperature spikes, but with a proper fan many new builds can keep up even when the film is still on the fan. Thats why I wanted to double check.
Ditto_is_Lit@reddit
Look, I'm not implying you didn't build it properly or anything. But if I'm building a PC, especially one for my father, I'm going to take the time to do a bang up job so he could be proud of it. Instead of just trying to get another one out of the door. If you need to double check it the following day you didn't take the time needed in the 1st place. That's just my build philosophy.
BenZoate42@reddit
I put the film in or on the cpu cooler box. Saves me the headache of taking off the cpu cooler to check.
XGreenDirtX@reddit
Never thought of this
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
i will check it tmr and see what they say , another question what fans u guys got or good for 9800x3d ?
Ditto_is_Lit@reddit
CPU's have a TDP, you simply need to check the specs of the cooler you're using and that will list it's TDP then cross reference your CPU's TDP. You should always use one that has a bit of headroom if you want a good experience. And ensure your case has good airflow by using enough case fans to circulate ample fresh air when under load.
TaeyeonFTW@reddit
Get a 360mm aio
Berzerker7@reddit
You do not need even any AIO to effectively cool a 9800X3D. In fact, a $35 120mm Peerless Assassin is one of the best coolers on the market and has no problem with it.
Minimum-Intention820@reddit
Can confirm, have one myself on my 9800x3d.
masonoli@reddit
Same, and my tdie sits at about 40.
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
Do you mean case fans? CPU cooler?
If cpu cooler:
It doesn’t need anything more than a $35-$40 peerless assassin or phantom spirit air cooler. It’s not a hot cpu at all. So your temps are abnormal.
If you must go liquid, then you don’t need anything more than a 240mm AIO. Which those two air coolers perform like a 240mm AIO
TheGalacticApple@reddit
I have a phantom spirit argb, great value cooler and looks great.
physicsMathematics@reddit
Literally did that last year after 25 years of building computers
Vektor29A@reddit
Literally almost did this the other day, and I've been building PC's since 1998.
SpaceCadet2000@reddit
I have 20 years experience. I still fucked it up last year.
I knew I had to remove the plastic. I reminded myself: don't forget to remove the plastic. When it was time to mount the cooler, I was so caught up in other things that I forgot to remove the plastic.
This-Law-5433@reddit
In so many ways this happens
Last week I fucked up making stuffed chicken breaded it instead of seasoned iv been doing this for 20 years
That simple mistake paste or a sticker yea that will happen
MrDarwoo@reddit
Always build yourself, can make changes way easier down th line
starshin3r@reddit
Plastic film would immediately trigger thermal protection and shut off the PC on 95W.
Just a bad paste application, or fans mounted not the right way/awful case airflow.
SpaceCadet2000@reddit
No. It runs quite fine on a desktop load. And then when you load a game, it goes up to 95C instantly and the fans go berserk, but it doesn't crash.
Ask me how I know.
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
I’ve left plastic film on a 9900k before, and it ran hot as shit but never shut down on me
starshin3r@reddit
The only way it wouldn't turn off if thermal paste made contact with heatsink because of the spread, having a plastic sheet won't let you sustain 90W with TJmax. It's pretty much as having no heatsink at all.
SmokBarrage@reddit
yes but how many watts was it pulling? 95w is like a full load for some cpus. i would be shocked if a 1 tower 1 fan cooler could get 95w out of a 9800x3d WITH the film on.
blackwaterification@reddit
A -15 to -30mv undervolt depending on the chip might do you wonders. With a dual tower cooler mine also hit 95°C during heavy loads till I undervolted. Now barely going above 75°C at same loads and clicks. However that was at 130w+ with pbo and expo on. No performance loss, it's not an under clock.
beef99@reddit
the 9800x3d can run at those temps.
but out of curiosity, what cooler do you have?
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
Antec Frigus Air 400 ARGB
beef99@reddit
that's the problem then. that is only a single tower. you should upgrade to a dual-tower, like the thermalright peerless assassin.
the 9800x3d is just gonna throttle itself down from 95c. it isn't gonna cook itself, but you will get less performance.
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
time to upgrade
auschwitzelsucht@reddit
Have the same CPU and a beefiers GPU, during gaming the CPU was hitting 85 and 95 with some titiles, also ram started to freeze my PC due to overclock. If your case supports it, you should look into getting a cheap AIO - having hot air blown straight out of the case did wonders for me. CPU and ram temps each decreased 13 degreec C°.
Worldly-Ingenuity843@reddit
You don't need a dual tower to cool a 95W CPU. In fact over in SFFPC a lot of people use low profile coolers on their 9800x3D, and I have a 9800x3D that's being cooled by a NH-L12Sx77.
TurbistoMasturbisto@reddit
Definitely something wrong. I have the same cpu and run very cpu heavy games with 20+ mods installed and have almost never seen it go over 65C.
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
u have good fans ? i have the artec frigus air 400 i was told it is weak for my cpu
TurbistoMasturbisto@reddit
I have the Arctic liquid freezer pro. Not to expensive but not as cheap as just fans obviously.
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
isnt that overkill tho ? do u feel like there is wood stove inside the room ?
Worldly-Ingenuity843@reddit
Conversation of energy dude. It doesn't matter how powerful the cooler is. It's still going to pump the same amount of heat into the room.
TurbistoMasturbisto@reddit
Don’t really care if it’s overkill. It’s not that expensive to me and works great so i went for it. Not sure what you mean with that wood stove saying?
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
i mean do u feel any heat coming from ur pc ?
TurbistoMasturbisto@reddit
Not really but like what cooler you use is irrelevant to the heat coming out? Fan or AIO both push hot air out of your pc. It’s just the way they do it that’s different.
F4t-Jok3r@reddit
Gpu is a bit hot... mine (have also a 3080) is a round 60 to 65 with a hotspot of 80 with heavy gaming
BUT your CPU is struggeling to stay alive... there is something wrong... big time!
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
expand
F4t-Jok3r@reddit
If i would guess... its the sticker on the cpu cooler... or its not mounted "good enough"...
or (if its an aio) your is broken or yours is a bit faulty...
samuelt525@reddit
Bruh its 96 C not 96 F
We need an update
Gravelyy@reddit
!RemindMe 1 day
Atma-Darkwolf@reddit
Along with others who suggest it may be the film(common mistake, it happens) it could also be (if you are using a AIO) that air has gotten into the pump(cpu part of aio) - this can happen if the pump is the highest part of the circuit of the aio(IE radiator mounted at bottom of case) - if so, see if u can move the radiator to the top (or side, with the top of radiator above cpu level and tubes at bottom) - idea is to keep any air in the circuit at the top of the radiator where it will just sit, air in the pump basically makes it stop moving water, and said water will heat right up and stay hot(And the pump will burn out super fast)
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
am using normal cooler with 1 fan no water thing
BoutTreeFittee@reddit
I feel like you've ruled out everything except 1) "plastic film from cpu cooler" or 2) no paste.
Atma-Darkwolf@reddit
ya. This. cannot really be any other thing (Even the fan on the cooler itself not working would not account for temp spikes that high...)
Funny-Carob-4572@reddit
I hit 47 max ....so far
stirry@reddit
If your idle temps are in the 90s, for sure your cooler wasn't installed correctly.
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
i was inside the game when i started recording the temps so it wasnt idle
PaperDistribution@reddit
Still.., I have the 9800x3D too and with the peerless assassin 120 se as my cooler, for me the temps are in the upper 70s during cinebench stresstest and 60s for most games.
Your case's airflow does add to it too, but it still shouldn't be in the 90s while playing games...
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
i have ANTEC CASE P 101 SILENT it is big ASS case it need 2 ppl to carry it and it has good air flow what , and ur cooler looks like mine but in 2x
BoutTreeFittee@reddit
Stupid question but... Can you see those fans in the case running?
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
yes
PaperDistribution@reddit
Pretty weird..if the cooler is mounted properly and not damaged, and also, if the thermal paste is spread well, I'm out of ideas tbh...
Not sure if some issues with the motherboard could cause something like that maybe?
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
am not saying thermal paste is spread well i need to check it but dont know how to tell if the thermal paste in badly spread or no, i never seen thermal paste applied in real life .
PaperDistribution@reddit
Pretty weird, if the cooler and thermal paste is applied properly I'm out of ideas tbh...

You should only go past 90C while drawing 160W...
minimalhandle@reddit
I have a 9850X3D and a 360mm AIO. I average around 65-70c whilst gaming for hours. CPU can hit mid 80s when compiling shaders but it’s never hit 90c. No, your temps are not normal
Sousuke-Sagara@reddit
Please say you took the sticker off the cpu block
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
i dont know i didnt build it ,i bought the parts and someone wwho build pc's build it
Sousuke-Sagara@reddit
Ahh hopefully they did. You may wanna get that checked but what cooler are you using. Are you using just a standard air cooler ?
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
Antec Frigus Air 400 ARGB
Sousuke-Sagara@reddit
Yeah your gonna need an upgrade bud. That cpu cooler is like £22 here in the UK. Themalright peerless assassin :)
Gungnir111@reddit
Or thermalright phantom spirit.
Sousuke-Sagara@reddit
Yeah
moragdong@reddit
Riding back on that comment, do you think 100mm Ocypus A40 gamma cooler for 7800x3d enough?
Sousuke-Sagara@reddit
My 7900x on my AIO never goes over 63 so I dont even look at anything else.
Sousuke-Sagara@reddit
Never heard of it so no need idea. I stopped using air coolers ages ago cause my temps sucked.
Sousuke-Sagara@reddit
Also what's the case has it got plenty of air flow and intake fans.
N00B_N00M@reddit
Probably the battlefield 6 , i was facing same issue with 7700x , it being at 95 when playing QHD@240 , playing at 1080p @240 reduces temps , or eco mode in bios brought it under 85 when playing at QHD@240 ultra
Snow_Uk@reddit
bad cooling solution or lack of airflow
my old case the 7700 would hit 87c but never any higher
new airflow case and better cooler it never goes over 62c in bf6
N00B_N00M@reddit
The room temp itself is 42 here so maybe 80 would be normal in this case for me ?
Snow_Uk@reddit
that will have a big effect on the temperatures
India ?
N00B_N00M@reddit
Yeah right, cpu idle at 50-59 in just browsing
Snow_Uk@reddit
20 in the house here and sitting at 26-27 browsing
N00B_N00M@reddit
7700x is basically like 7700 in eco mode, and it went max 85 in that .. runs in 70s when olaying game
Toast_Meat@reddit
Posting the cooler might help.
Something is amiss. Could be a failing cooler, incorrectly mounted cooler or cooler mounted with plastic film still attached... or all of the above lol.
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
Antec Frigus Air 400 ARGB WHICH is not good for my cpu i heard
Squaz-@reddit
Check out Noctua's range of coolers, NH-D15 is worth checking out!
Toast_Meat@reddit
That's a very minimal cooler that might just not be enough. Get a cheap dual tower cooler. That alone should make enough of a difference.
LawfuI@reddit
No, you probably didn't install the cooler correctly.
It only reaches 95C for me at around 140W while doing benchmarks or compiling shaders, never while playing games or normal use.
Daniel_Kummel@reddit
No, something is wrong with your cooling setup. There are many possibilities, as an example, when I screwed it up, I was sending hot air to the radiator's intake.
Far_Bad_5847@reddit
That is not normal.
NewestAccount2023@reddit
As an aside, the heat coming out of your case is purely a function of power usage. Your CPU is using 95w (in this game), but your GPU is pulling 350w. Your GPU is dumping 3.5x more heat into your room than your CPU.
MildlyAmusedMars@reddit
GPU is fine, on the high end, but fine. CPU there is absolutely something wrong. Thermal paste incorrectly applied or the plastic peel off on your cooler still being on is my guess
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
the cooler is moving
MildlyAmusedMars@reddit
By moving what do you mean? it can wiggle a little on the CPU? If so take it off, clean the CPU and the cooler, make sure the peel off isn't there, apply thermal fresh paste and reinstall tightly
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
the fans is moving
K_cutt08@reddit
That means nothing. Unmount that shit, make sure you don't have plastic peel off on there still, reapply thermal paste (correctly, look it up if you didn't), then reattach and tighten it down evenly by doing 3 screwdriver rotations on each screw, then 1 full rotation on each screw, then once it starts getting tight, do 1/2 rotations on each screw. Do opposite corners then switch, a lot like doing lug nuts on a car tire.
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
i dont know what u said but the guys who build the pc apparently have 10 yrs of exp or he did somthing wrong or forgot the do what u just said am gonna go there an check tmr
langley10@reddit
I’ve got 25+ years experience in IT, and I’ve left the plastic peel on a heat sink more than once… it’s very easy to overlook… or the thermal paste isn’t spread well, or they forgot the thermal paste… when you are doing the same thing day in day out one little distraction and you forget a step very easily. Tbh this is a very common and easily resolved issue with new builds, so don’t make excuses for your PCs builder, take it in, tell them its problems and if they have any care for their work they will look at it and probably fix it.
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
should i buy new one ( new fan) ? or just check if the thermal paste is badly spread or do both , i have the antec frigus air 400
langley10@reddit
No, just get it checked, do not buy a single thing, if someone built it they should stand behind their work and fix it
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
ya this is what i will do , am gonna give them my pc and tell them to replace the thing to better one and i will tell them to check those areas t,he thermal paste ,the plastic thingy to make sure they will remove it
K_cutt08@reddit
Ok, good luck buddy.
Your post is getting way too much attention lol
Sorry if it feels like we're overwhelming you.
Experienced builders make simple mistakes too.
I once couldn't get my fully built PC to turn on and was ready to start taking things apart when I called the PSU's tech support just to find out that I didn't turn the PSU switch on. Felt like an idiot, but sometimes the simple stuff gets overlooked because it's such a non-issue you don't even think about it.
isotope123@reddit
I'm assuming he means the fans
Thorwoofie@reddit
Thats far from normal, even at full load on demanding games. Sure fans can be moving, but if the cooler is not making proper contact, than a big chunk of the heat is not being transfered to your cooler and remains on your cpu, leaving it to roast.
siegsage@reddit
bombmaxxing ftw
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)

ColonelDerp@reddit
Is bf6 even that CPU heavy? What’s your fps target? I get like 75-80W at 90fps end game Satisfactory. Try running a stress test, see what power draw it caps out on, but regardless it shouldn’t really be hitting those temps at ~100W draw. Think even stock cooler would keep it below prochot there. Either really bad pressure/thermal paste application or broken cooler.
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
yes bf 6 is cpu heavy
wdeag1e@reddit
My 9800x3d idles under 30 and maxes out at 80 in the games I play. Get a better cooler and make certain to remove the plastic on is bottom. You have a great CPU, now get a proper cooler for it.
sHoRtBuSseR@reddit
Something is wrong.
ferrarif50hunt@reddit
Regardless of whether you built this PC yourself, remove the cooler and check that the plastic has been removed from the bottom. It's a common mistake and the most likely cause at this stage.
SmokBarrage@reddit
What cooler do you have?
Sweet_Sir_2143@reddit (OP)
Antec Frigus Air 400 ARGB
SmokBarrage@reddit
Cooler is a little weak but shouldn't be this bad.
Its rated for 150w so it shouldn't be 95 at these loads. Check paste, make sure sticker is removed from cooler coldplate and when you're attaching the cooler try and tighten each side evenly if possible
