Its an extremely complicated, fragile, and expensive way to make 110hp. Other companies were building better engines making comparable or more power for less money at the time. Its neat if you are DEEP into Porsche history, but otherwise its not a particularly good engine design.

$200K for 108bhp, refuses to tune them. Absurd. Porsche people will pay for anything.

Interesting article, but it doesn't explain why the engine has four cam shafts.
Is there anything I can read to learn more about it?
turboevoluzione@reddit
It's a double overhead cam, multiply it by two cylinder banks and you get four cams.
I guess it's "special" because it was the first Porsche DOHC engine
AwesomeBantha@reddit
Does this make it one of the most expensive engines relative to its power output?
And why does it take 450 hours to rebuild? That seems like an order of magnitude higher than what I was expecting.
Bonerchill@reddit
It doesn’t take 450 hours.
I’ve been in the resto world for too many years. Never trust a shop owner; they’re hyperbole machines. It’s what we do- we sell ourselves. In a different time, shop owners would be called whores.
There’s a lot of time in setting gear correlations. Quite a bit of time in building a crankshaft. Gotta double-check all your machinist’s work, unless you do it yourself. Put engine on stand, run it. 40 hours to rebuild the carbs alone.

In order to justify the Porsche tax of course, then owners can brag about how much human labor their restoration projects commanded.

I actually subscribe to the physical magazine. They’ve been doing a great job with it for the last few years. Worth it in my opinion. They profiled 3 people who specialize in something rare. Another guy (and son) do all the Jag XJ220s.

Unfortunately the article is paywalled.
