Why does every British conversation sound mildly sarcastic?

Because yanks don't understand the concept of sarcasm, or how to use or perceive it correctly, for the most part.
Proud_Grapefruit63@reddit
Some of us confuse sarcasm with irony (and irony with coincidence.)
ak30live@reddit
It's our default setting at birth.
the_speeding_train@reddit
Only mildly?
open-perception4@reddit
Does it really? Hmmmmm
AshtonBlack@reddit
Sarcastic, me? An older British man steeped in centuries in a society that lauds "clever" comedy, word-play and puns?
I've never been so insulted in all my life. How very dare you! Sarcasm? Perish the thought.
Morris_Alanisette@reddit
It doesn't. We're never sarcastic.
effortless-brat@reddit
Because we are all mildly sarcastic?
LycheeAlert9758@reddit
I moved here 10 years ago and the sarcasm is one of my most favourite things š there is an art and finesse to it and itās amazing when someone has quick wits and manage to respond with a clever sarcastic response.
Efficient_Hyena_7476@reddit
Visit Liverpool. Nobody is sarcastic, there.
JungleyD@reddit
Yep - famous for the lack of sarcasm, Liverpool is.
caughtunaware@reddit
I don't know but honestly I feel we perhaps all don't sound sarcastic. I am Scottish and while we do love a bit of banter and sarcasm my ears don't hear all Brits as being the same.
For example to me the Welsh just sound so happy. Even when they're upset and kicking off (I used to work in a customer focused role). Some parts of Northern England just sound so warm and welcoming. I could go on. I love the variety out small island has.
JungleyD@reddit
The Highland lilt is so gentle they can say the most viciously appalling things and still sound like they're lovingly reassuring a toddler who has woken in the night from a bad dream.
Outside-Parfait-8935@reddit
It's in our blood. We basically can't converse without some sarcasm creeping in. Most of us find being genuine extremely difficult.
Adorable_Past9114@reddit
Really? You don't say
Fantastic-Cat-5252@reddit
I hope you have a VERY happy cake day
Adorable_Past9114@reddit
Ooh, so kind
n7shepard1987@reddit
Agreed, if i say say summat nice and sincere to my daughter she has to ask if I'm being sarcastic lol.
RNEngHyp@reddit
We are genuine though. Genuinely sarcastic!
But it does come from a place of being... well... erm... genuine.
Honest.
ResponsibleBend2195@reddit
What's genuine?
smartfellerayi@reddit
As a proud sarcastic Brit, you are getting my genuine self if I can be sarcastic with you.
If I can't, you're getting the mask.
Witty_Ad_2098@reddit
Because it is. It always makes me laugh when Americans feel the need to explain when they are being sarcastic. Sarcasm is cultural for us Brits.
JungleyD@reddit
/s š
eatseveryth1ng@reddit
I cringe so hard when someone comments on Reddit in the most obviously sarcastic/facetious way and ends the comment with ā /sā
Gullible_Fan4427@reddit
But we have to because if not, we get people questioning our sarcasm.. and thatās sad š
alphahydra@reddit
The joy of sarcasm, and lots of other types of humour, depends on the recipient piecing together the right interpretation in their own mind (or it flying right over their head).
/s is like immediately explaining a joke. You might as well just not use sarcasm if you're going to label it, because it defeats the purpose.
FuzzyBreak5678@reddit
I think it should be actually illegal to use it in any British based subreddit.
hepheastus_87@reddit
Because that'll help.
NeilDeWheel@reddit
Somebody ought to invent a sarcasm detector.
SatiricalScrotum@reddit
Oh wow, a sarcasm detector. Thatās a really useful invention.
Idonthinksom8@reddit
Oh do you now
JungleyD@reddit
I love it. Itās my absolute fave.
ArcherApprehensive18@reddit
Sometimes I feel like it must be an insult. Like "you're so dumb I need to signpost this for you".
AuroraDF@reddit
I recently got down voted massively in a thread which has people from across the world but is mostly Americans, because I made a sarcastic comment and didn't tag it with /s or whatever you're meant to do. The day Im required to start explaining whenever I'm being sarcastic is the day I stop speaking.
IntrepidMaybe8579@reddit
Whats weird is as a brit in America i can hardly tell when their being sarcastic and i dont get it⦠i think we have entirely different ways or maybe we just naturally recognize it more in eachother i think americans dont change their tone when they are maybe thats what trips me up
MisabelWearsNikes@reddit
Exactly. Americans are so literal that they need to have sarcasm explained, which defies the point of being sarcastic.
Kudosnotkang@reddit
Americans: Iām being sarcastic btw ^_^
Brit: Eurgh I think you just made me dumber hearing that obvious disclaimer
polkadotska@reddit
Americans value earnestness. Brits generally find that cringe. Speaking with sarcasm, archness, irony - these are playful ways of speaking that not only negate earnestness, but also allows you to show off wordplay/antiphrasis/litotes/self-deprecation/tone/a wide vocabulary.
Lanky-Big4705@reddit
Good word choice. In many situations here even the word āearnestā is pejorative. We distrust overly straight people.
neverendum@reddit
What a great post, I need to look up some of these terms. Never heard of antiphrasis and litotes before.
AppearanceAwkward364@reddit
Earnestness itself is a form of sarcasm in the right context. It's a great weapon when used on certain people.
keepgoingguy@reddit
Hmmm, sure.

Artificial-Brain@reddit
Oh aye...
Incantanto@reddit
Genetic reflex. Culturally we don't like earnestness or sincerity, its seen as awkward and gauche, so sarcasm is our mother tongue
Fine-Night-243@reddit
It's this isn't it. Not so much sarcasm as a layer of irony so people don't think we are taking ourselves too seriously. I swear it's the reason people dislike Keir Starmer so much.
Incantanto@reddit
Theres a great pop anthropology book called watching the English and the two things I remember from it about conversations was that humor is very important to us and we really fo not like earnestness.

It is part of being a bit humble at times. You can't be too gushing or positive as it sounds fake. Then if something really does need praise, you know it is sincere.

When I lived in California, my friend found a conversation very hard to follow. There was me, a Brit, and a young valley girl.
Everything the valley girl said sounded sarcastic but was sincere, meanwhile everytime I was sincere it sounded sarcastic. She decided not to converse with the two of us together ever again.
MapOfIllHealth@reddit
I live overseas and Iāve just stopped bothering being sincere because all the my Aussie friends accuse me of being sarcastic
Ghotay@reddit
Yep. One of my friends is a middle-aged Scottish man. He once said something to me like āYouāre a really great friend to me and I appreciate the time we spend togetherā. Except in his voice it just sounds like heās taking the piss. I couldnāt stop laughing at his genuine attempt at sincerity, poor bloke. Must be genetic
Fanny_Flapps@reddit
Did ye ayeĀ
emmacappa@reddit
Yeah, I had an Aussie mate and he would say "Yeah, right" and every time he did I had to check and remind myself that he was not saying this sarcastically.

"Mildly" is putting it mildly, old chap.

Time-Mode-9@reddit
Probably because every British conversation is mildly sarcastic.Ā
ginger-tiger108@reddit
Because they are! especially if it's a conversation being had with a American but ironically if someone is being playfully sarcastic it means they quite like you and it's when they aren't mildly taking the p!ss that you know they absolutely loath your guts
SpaceJkr@reddit
It might be the people you are around. The I moved from a industrial manual workplace into a corporate office in a completely unrelated field.
The constant sarcasm in the social chat from the people in the office wore me down. It was eye opening the way some people chose to navigate the world.

Yes mate. Every single conversation is entirely sarcastic. Brilliant observation š

Itās to ward off foreign types. A defence mechanism.

Broad-Raspberry1805@reddit
Right.
DemonicHedgehogs@reddit
I lived in Canada for a couple of years and was constantly being accused of being sarcastic in meetings when I was actually being sincere. The problem is that weāre generally less effusive and demonstrative, so that may be seen as not being genuine. In reality weāre just not pretending that complimenting someone for doing their job well is deserving of a great deal of excitement.
Labyrinth2_718@reddit

I have a half-sarcastic voice. Its a defence mechanism mainly so that if I say something stupid I can pretend it is sarcasm.
And if I accidentally say something clever when i'm trying to be sarcastic i can still take the credit.
Emotional-Shallot674@reddit
Do they? 𤣠I think there's a combination of our humour and our overly polite manner (compared to some cultures) that comes over as sarcasm, and sometimes performative politeness, which can come across as sarcasm. I'm Scottish, so insincerity is absolutely part of our banter. "did ye, aye" is a prime example.
