Humans are the fucking problem in just about every situation.
Dogs are just always such empathetic and kind hearted souls. We don't deserve their love but the give it anyway. That's why.
Res_Novae17@reddit
Your dog would kill and eat you with no remorse if it thought it would improve its situation. They have evolved expressions and behavior that humans find emotive and deferential because it has gotten them fed for thousands of years.
SoundJazzlike6601@reddit
Improve? They would only do that if they were starving, dumbass. Dogs do feel connection, too. It's easily googable
Res_Novae17@reddit
You literally don't even know for certain that other humans feel anything at all. They probably do, but you can never be certain anything in the universe is conscious except yourself. Don't come over here insulting me and throwing around hubris about what it's like to be a dog.
AdrunIsSad@reddit
symbiotic relationships can be a difficult concept when you have nothing to offer.

I have a hypothetical scenario that makes people hate me. I love cats, if I was asked to sacrifice the cat I loved the most to save one random human being I do not know I would sacrifice the cat every time.
If you can't treat another person better than an animal you're a shit human being.
_Pin_6938@reddit
Thats like would you rather kill a family member to spare a random persons life
fookreddit22@reddit
It's absolutely fucking not unless the family member is human.
_Pin_6938@reddit
Why not? They hold the same value to me as a human family member
fookreddit22@reddit
So what if it's a choice between an animal family member and a human family member. Is it a very fucking obvious choice? Of course it is. Or are you gonna look your nan in the eye and say sorry love but you've had a good run and rover is just too fucking important.
I love animals and I absolutely viewed all of my pets as family but I would never value any animals life above a humans regardless of how much I love the animal (my initial comment repackaged because you didn't get it the first time)
_Pin_6938@reddit
Of course it is, i would sacrifice a loved pet for a loved one but not for a random one.
fookreddit22@reddit
You do realize that a random human being also has roughly a 1/4 chance of being a child right? Might even be a baby. Enjoy your pet scumbag.
cle4rr@reddit
there’s roughly a 1 in 8.3 billion chance that random human being is you, and boy i’m feeling lucky
fookreddit22@reddit
Corny af and I don't think you got the minerals to kill your pet so fuck off.
_Pin_6938@reddit
Theres also a 1/4 chance that human being is a narcissist POS. Insulting people on reddit wont do you any better. Atleast my pet had an impact on my life.
fookreddit22@reddit
Eww hyperbole. Whatever helps you sleep at night.
BurnMeTonight@reddit
Why? A life is a life.
fookreddit22@reddit
Agreed. However as a human I put other human life above different animals life, in the exact same way that animals put their species above other species.
BurnMeTonight@reddit
Thing is, animals don't all do that. Dogs for instance, put their humans above other dogs. Which is why I'd save my dog over any other human. Another human is another human. To my dogs I'm their entire world. It's only fair that I see them the same.
fookreddit22@reddit
Dogs that are conditioned by humans act in the humans defence. Dogs that are part of a pack do not. Your dogs will likely eat you if you die and they are unable to feed themselves, more so than cat.
BirbsAreSoCute@reddit
What the fuck are they supposed to do?
fookreddit22@reddit
Fucking die.
BirbsAreSoCute@reddit
Lmao?
Xardnas69@reddit
True! I pick the animal. My family members are at best strangers I've never met and at worst assholes i unfortunately have met. Pet i love unconditionally or human i either don't care about or actively hate. Pretty easy choice no?
I doubt she'd recognize me given that she has dementia, but sure i would if necessary. I'd sacrifice anything if it meant i could extend my pet's life by even one second.
Why not? What makes human life inherently worth more than animal life? What makes us better than them? Our ability to think? If you look at what we've used it for, I'd say it makes us worse. We have a grasp of complex concepts such as morals only to continuously act against them. We hurt and kill other creatures, including other humans since you care so much, for the dumbest reasons. Animals can inherently do no wrong because they are animals. They're too stupid to understand the concept of right and wrong, they just act based on instinct. We however, do have a concept of right and wrong and yet we so often consciously choose to do the wrong thing. Kinda sounds like we're the ones whose lives should be worth less.
fookreddit22@reddit
Sound like you're only focusing on the negativity of humanity and not the beauty. A common trait in scumbags who would put an animal above a human.
Animals kill for sport and can be just as cruel as any human. Just because they dont have a moral compass doesn't mean it hurts any less when someones pet xxl pitbull rips apart someone else's pet cat.
Idgaf what your decision is tbh but don't try and take moral fucking high ground because you'd rather the possibility of a child being killed to have a few more years with your pet. It's fucking selfish.
smellybassist@reddit
Not saying you’re wrong and I’m right. From my perspective, an animal will never be a part of the family. They’re essentially property. And they don’t love you, they’re dependent and you’re the food dispenser. Plus losing a pet imo is nowhere near the same level as losing a loved one. I lost my sister very young, so it always pisses me off when people compare a dog or whatever dying to that. I’ve lost pets as well, it’s not even close
BirbsAreSoCute@reddit
This is scientifically proven to be false in both cats and dogs.

SirTremain@reddit
Honestly I think I'd do the same with my cat, but just playing devil's advocate:
Couldn't you already make that trade right now? Any effort, time, and money you invest in your cat could be used to instead help humans in need right now.
And why stop at just your cat? I'm sure there are other aspects of your life you could forgoe and put the money towards helping other people. Maybe eat less takeout, buy cheaper clothing, don't go on holiday etc.
In case it isn't obvious I don't actually think anyone should do those things. But I don't think it's so easy to just say you should just give up some important aspect of your life in order to save another human life. If you (or I) genuinely believed that, we'd be out there helping other people as much as we can, and we could always do just a little bit more.
In summary, sometimes the moral choice (in this case great personal sacrifice) isn't the right one.
PalpitationFine@reddit
If you want to follow caring about other humans to the extreme, you would give every dollar you make, volunteer all your free time and when the cost benefit analysis suggests you are not as productive as you can be, you would die in a manner that your organs would be intact for donation.
Or you can care about two conflicting things at the same time though
Quolley@reddit
No one's saying that, but the price of pet food/kitty litter adds up. That's money that could be sent to orphanages or something!
fookreddit22@reddit
People should absolutely be more helpful toward each other.
This hypothetical illustrates that people are generally selfish. The reality of it is that the human being you do not know is out there having a human experience. People will likely mourn that person far greater than I could ever mourn my favorite cat. I don't want to hear shit about how we should all be more compassionate towards other people when I'm still out here trying to get people to understand why picking the human is important.
GruntBlender@reddit
So, get rid of the cat and use the total lifetime spending you'd do for the cat to instead fund a new well for an African village that will absolutely save human lives. Or donate it to some medical charity that vaccinates people in developing countries. Or a charity that provides food aid in places with famines or food insecurity.
fookreddit22@reddit
You're adding unnecessary stuff to a hypothetical question to ease your guilt.
GruntBlender@reddit
Nah, it's a practicality extension to the original hypothetical. Here's a practical way of fulfilling the hypothetical, most people won't do it, so their answer to the hypothetical was BS in the first place.
fookreddit22@reddit
It's called moving the goalposts. I'm not entertaining you to make you feel better. Your hypothetical is a Different one to mine.
GruntBlender@reddit
No, it's the same. Would you sacrifice the cat to save a human. Apparently only if it was easy like pressing a button or something. When you can actually do it, but there's no immediate feedback, you're not so keen.
fookreddit22@reddit
No I would kill the cat myself in whatever way the hypothetical required. Cats are my favorite animals, it was literally my first word. I'm still doin it.
Think of it more a trolley problem. You have a lever, one side your cat the other side random person. You can't build fucking wells in Africa to solve the fucking problem no matter how humanitarian it is.
GruntBlender@reddit
What's the difference between stopping the trolley and vaccinating a whole village against a deadly disease?
fookreddit22@reddit
Cba
Iriss@reddit
No one likes to acknowledge damage done by omission, they just want to take the moral high ground in their made-up scenario.
Xardnas69@reddit
Weak. I know with absolute certainty i would never sacrifice my cat for any human. Or all humans. I'd rather sacrifice humanity to save my cat.
hikarinokaze@reddit
You'd make a better villain than those in most modern films and games.
Xardnas69@reddit
Thank you, but unfortunately that's not a high bar to clear lmao
fookreddit22@reddit
Ok. You're a terrible human being. Carry on.
ur_moms_boy-toy@reddit
If I'm ever in this situation, I'll just have to hope the person my cat died for isn't an insufferable moralist like you.
GruntBlender@reddit
Then do it. Get rid of the pet and use the money you save to fund charities that save human lives.
ur_moms_boy-toy@reddit
I don't have any pets.
fookreddit22@reddit
Ironically I use this argument specifically to piss off virtue signallers. I absolutely dgaf what people's personal moral choices are, I call them scumbags for my own amusement. I , in no way, pass any sincere judgement on anyone who's replied to my comment.
Good job on killing your cat though fucking psycho.
BirbsAreSoCute@reddit
No you wouldn't lmao don't even pretend
fookreddit22@reddit
Ok
clubdon@reddit
The number of people I would choose over my cat is about five.
fookreddit22@reddit
Ironically people that choose their pet are the reason why people choose their pet. People choose animals because people suck, people like you, who put an animal above a human, suck.
IamWatchingAoT@reddit
Shut the fuck up bro. There's a million variables in this shitty scenario you've so geniously envisioned and yet you are judging people for making an imaginary choice in which they have no context. Of course they're going to choose what is most dear to them. Dumbass.
clubdon@reddit
If people didn’t suck I wouldn’t choose my cat. It goes full circle.

Humans have developed the cognition to reasonably be expected to care for each other and the organisms around us, if not for the sake of altruism, then through the understanding of how doing so benefits self survival and the survival of our species. No other animal carries that burden.
Humans consistently fail to live up to that standard.
Dogs are just cute lil guys.

ThatOneGuyIn1939@reddit
on a fundamental, existential level, there's nothing that makes a human life more valuable than a dog's btw
UristMcMagma@reddit
No... normal people would absolutely not kill a bunch of animals in cold blood to save human lives. Normal people would find it very difficult to pull the trigger in that situation. Something about empathy, I think.

This occurs due to normal empathy I think, when a human gets hurt we can empathise and understand they in some way understand why it is happening even if it's a horrible reason. A dog cannot understand why it's happening and to see a creature that only wants to love you and be friends experiencing terrifying confusion is heartbreaking. It's seeing innocence get crushed, it's why we react violently and angrily to dog abusers. IMO ofc.

Same with planes.

How dying in (or surviving) a plane crash is a bigger deal that a car accident?
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
A plane crash is an anomaly. Car crashes are a systemic feature.
Dark_Knight2000@reddit
Also people perceive some degree of control on car crashes. Plane crashes as a passenger are equivalent to a natural disaster, you’re just there for the ride.
assasin1598@reddit
Also the scale. A single car crash kills 1-2 people on average.
A plane crash can kill 200 people at the same time.
Theres also that to crash a plane is more difficult due to more safety features often being escalation of several problems at once, rather than some drunk idiot speeding in to a tree.
Unless youre flying with Aeroflot, thats a gamble.
basilisk_boi2@reddit

Res_Novae17@reddit
We do the same thing with guns. When we talk about gun violence, we imagine mass shootings, but the overwhelming majority of firearm homicides are one person shooting one other person with a handgun. This is an actual problem because it causes politicians to focus policy discussion in directions that will have very little statistical impact (i.e. the obsession with banning this one model of firearm that is used in less than 0.2% of gun homicides.)
We're just wired to pay attention to spectacular events.
AmaterasuWolf21@reddit
This just proves that planes crashing is so rare that it needs a headline
AlfredKnows@reddit
I agree with that. However the sentiment is about catastrophe, tragedy, loss of life. It is a spectacular death. I say it is not fair, because in a sense of a tragedy, daily life in traffic is much more tragic.
