Holding it in weird angles up to the window so you dont lose a life 🤣
dudderson@reddit
I had one of those things you snapped onto it and it had a light and a magnifying screen. Added like, 30 more pounds to that brick but it was PERFECT for our road trips!!! As long as I beat Island Adventure before the batteries wore out....which never happened, lol
Negative-Wrap95@reddit
There was an aftermarket light kit. Basically a light and magnifier combo.
Source: I had one in my 1st gen
Dakkin4@reddit
Yes! This is what I came to say. I had it too.
PYCHYOUOUT97@reddit
or trying to read in the car at night
Daylight-Silence@reddit
That's why the true degenerates had this abomination
Secret_Elevator17@reddit
Yep, it was necessary in the stationwagon on 14 hour drives.
the_well_read_neck_@reddit
I had one of these and it was awesome for the 15 minutes it worked before it drained the batteries.
Dandruff83@reddit
I rocked the Booster Boy
Daylight-Silence@reddit
That looks somehow more absurd than the other one, which as I recall was semi functional once you took the button covers off
Dandruff83@reddit
Loved it 👌🏻
SubstanceNo1544@reddit
I would have been jelly... all i had was the little light thingy
Daylight-Silence@reddit
This one? Don't be jealous, I had both and the little light was way more functional, and actually still portable unlike the other fiasco
SubstanceNo1544@reddit
Yep thats the one nice find!
Sirtriplenipple@reddit
I was this degenerate.
solidwhetstone@reddit
You gotta show the OG though
NatrousOxide23@reddit
jaywinner@reddit
That's why you get a Game Gear.
Powerful_Wombat@reddit
And burn through six AA batteries in a few hours playing Columns? I’d rather have a Game Boy
Satur_Nine@reddit
It came with adapter. I used that more than the six batteries
an_inverse@reddit
Columns as a diss is the best thing ever. Lol 🤣
ConfidenceFragrant80@reddit
You mean playing the original sonic the hedgehog just to run out of battery life on the very last level.. 😭
FidgitForgotHisL-P@reddit
Or mortal kombat and same lol
jaywinner@reddit
It will burn through batteries but it had good games too.
weedtrek@reddit
That's why I had one of these...
TheDukeofArgyll@reddit
Money bags over here had accessories
weedtrek@reddit
I feel like it was like $12, which was cheaper than most games. It was a life saver on car rides.
TheDukeofArgyll@reddit
$12 for a toy? Is it my birthday or Christmas? I guess you must be Richie Rich with that kind of cash.
neuro_space_explorer@reddit
I rocked this light until the backlit gba.
YogurtOld412@reddit
Still have mine, it's green
theforestbather@reddit
I had one of these bad boys. Wasn't the best, but it helped. Mostly it just doubled the amount of batteries needed.
CantaloupeAsleep502@reddit
Who's got a working giant og game boy these days??
brainfreeze77@reddit
I have one but it's impossible for my old eyes now. I play emulators on a Retroid Pocket now.
brainfreeze77@reddit
I refurbished mine this winter so I could play some games and it's impossible to see. I ended up getting Retroid pocket and it's so much better.
46handwa@reddit
Watched an interesting video about how the fact that it wasn't backlit meant that it consumed less batteries which allowed it to outcompete backlit systems, due to having to budget less for batteries
robin_888@reddit
We even turned of the music or dialed down the volume to save batteries.
XennialDad@reddit
I saw this too. I would have doubled the AA use. I would have been ok with that honestly. Especially if they'd designed it to still work with 4 and no backlight, or you slap 8 in to get the backlight.
Joker-Smurf@reddit
Or in sunlight. Or in low light. Or direct light. Or indirect light.
alwaus@reddit
The gameboy could if had a backlit color sxreen butbit would of cost an extra $3 per unit and cut the runtime down by 25% or require 2 more AAs so we ended up with the smeary monochrome abomination they used.
No big loss, they ended up selling the screen to make the Game Gear.
Ultimate-Flexionator@reddit
blanket over head and flashlight
Sufficient_Brush9501@reddit
the struggle was REAL
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Shout out to the Gameboy pocket!
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I squinted. Was lucky to have enough money for batteries.
Mr_Snub@reddit
I spent so many sitting on the toilet with the lid down because it was the best lighting for a Gameboy. I recently had to bust out my old Gameboy Advance to finish Mother 3 and it was a fucking nightmare.
I love my retro games, but god damn.
FidgitForgotHisL-P@reddit
Nothing like realising how much you put up with when we didn’t know better haha.
I got my old psp out to show the kids and wow, even just basics taken-for-granted control systems for movement hadn’t been developed yet. Even the best games on it can be a total slog.
donutseason@reddit
This just fucked me up whoa
NextBestHyperFocus@reddit
I dunno I had an Atari Lynx, never had the problem.
Aromatic_Battle_@reddit
Holding flashlight with chin while gaming lol memories
johndicks80@reddit
Yep I had a light attachment that sucked batteries.
NotBornYesterday420@reddit
It was worse in the sunlight
SignoreBanana@reddit
Core memory unlocked
S1ayer@reddit
TURN THAT OFF, IT'S ILLEGAL
JediRebel79@reddit (OP)
🤣😂🤣 they lied to us!!
_MartianJasper_@reddit
man the battery life on those things was brutal
Cinderhazed15@reddit
That’s why combat was turn based!
throwaway43234235234@reddit
Thats why we have chromatic now. Backlights with color screen!
