Mercedes-AMG releases additional teaser pictures of the Mythos CLE63

It’s heavily rumoured to be limited to 30 units ànd to have 646 horsepower. Spyshots show it features a roll cage, à rear end wider then the widened hips of the CLE53, à tall ànd long spoiler with an active moving spoiler on the top of it, new front facia air intakes, and a partially redesigned rear. Based on spyshot photos has a lot of the inner workings behind the grill are heavily exposed. Not just the Mythos based CLE will be released this year but also the heavily promoted 2nd generation AMG-GT Black Series. Mercedes-AMG has commuincated it’s heavily based on their upcoming new GT3 variant of the AMG-GT.

The article suggests this is a GT3 RS rival. Isn’t the new AMG GT Black successor that we just got photos of supposed to be the GT3 RS rival? I don’t understand how this is also going to be a rival. Wouldn’t this be an M4 rival to some degree?

This isn't a rival for anything, it's a garage queen that is going to be bought by rich Mercedes vips, I imagine all 30 are already spoken for. Nothing about this car makes sense, it's taking the heavy, non sporty, cle chassis and turning it up to 11 with a roll and v8, while they sell the gt which is probably going to cost less than this. I would be shocked if this costs less than the gt 63 and out performs it. And the gt 63 is already SLOW. All this car is a way for Mercedes to generate 6 million (30*200,000) in revenue through making a parts bin special. Usually parts bin specials can be cool, but only if the actual parts in the parts bin are good. What is good or high performance about the CLE chassis? Sometimes I think cars like this are cool because even if I'll never buy one I might see one at a car show or track day. But at 30 units? I highly doubt any of them will even be tracked, Mercedes drivers / owners are usually not into motor sports or tracking their cars.

How is the gt63 slow?

Pulling some numbers from car and driver lightning lap. The new gt 63 pro is slower than the last gen c190 gt r and the 2017 911 turbo s; both of which additionally have the disadvantage of 8 year older tire technology. Also slower than a new 911 GTS. The gt 63 non pro was slower than the Cadillac ct5 blackwing and m3 cs in the same year it was tested, also slower than the 2020 porsche Cayman gt4. It was also only 7 tenths faster than the 2016 c190 GT S. Rerun that c190 on modern tired and I bet it's faster. Car and driver isn't the end all be all of lap times, it's just a conveniant source that actually has lots of standardized old data. They also run quite a few laps to get the best time. James from throttle house actually lapped the new gt 63 faster than the old c190 GT. But I don't agree with their methodology, he only does 3 laps in both cars. Also I believe he did it on a colder day so I imagine the awd system helped more on a day like that. Ultimately I don't even need lap times to determine it will be slower than the old gen or just be slow in general, basic power to weight and front rear balance will tell us that. GT63 makes 577 hp from the same now modern classic 4.0 tt v8 that all v8 amg cars use in various states of tune, while weighing 4245 pounds, 7.35 pounds per a hp. The c190 GTS would have been like 505 hp but 3650 pounds, 7.22 pounds per a hp. While that seems really close the real difference maker is the chassis. Because the last gen c190 used a totally bespoke chassis it was able to mount the engine entirely behind the front axles, making it mid engine ( front mid engine). It also was able to use a bespoke dct transxle, mounted under the trunk. It had a 47-53 front - rear weight distribution. While 50/50 is often cited as being perfect, closer to 45-55 is actually faster due to being able to load the rear more under acceleration and keeping more weight over the rear under breaking. The new c192 amg gt 63 is 54 - 46 front rear, which comparatively is really awful for performance. The c192 is also using entirely off the shelf Mercedes parts. It uses a standard Mercedes 9 speed slush box auto, not because it's faster, but because it's an off the shelf part which makes it cheaper for Mercedes to produce. The awd system, the v8+ 9 speed auto, the interior, are all of the shelf Mercedes parts. Even the platform is shared with the Mercedes SL which I imagine is just a modified c/e/s class platform. Now you do get the benifit of awd on the new gen, but I don't think that's worth the massive weight distribution penalty. Also don't really think 577hp is enough power the justify awd. And it seems some lap times agree with me. The awd isn't for performance it's to make it a better daily driver. Every change about the c192 vs the c190 is to make cheaper for Mercedes to produce, while increasing price over last gen, to really just pad out their profit on the car. And to make it into a comfier grand tourer that 80 years old can take to golf. Where as the c190 was a purebread dedicated sportscar with lots of bespoke and expensive parts. I don't think the c192 is a bad car for its target demographic, it's probably an amazing car for its target demographic. But that target demographic is entirely different than the one for the c190. It's just that the c190 was a very special and cool car, and the c192 is just corporate laziness and greed, it's corporate slop. Also if you don't trust my opinion on this at all trust Mercedes than. The new c192 gt is such a slow platform that they are making another bespoke platform to homologate their new GT3 race car. The c192 is so bad at performance that Mercedes racing refused to use it for the new GT3. Sorry for the long comment I had time to kill while waiting for something haha.

Fair enough I could have specified, In my mind everything with cars is relative. Take a 200 hp dct elantra and go back 10 years and that car is fast. Relative performance is the best way to measure things to me. The new amg gt, relative to competitors at its price and below, relative to other cars around it's power, and relative to its own previous generation, is very slow. Like a BMW m2 is faster around a track than the gt 63 for 1/3 the price. The amg GT is slow relative to the modern era of performance cars. Its only fast when you compare it to 20 year old performance cars.

Yeah that’s true. I think it’s just not a car they tried to make a performace juggernaut comparison wise.

Its a car meant for 80 year old men to show off when they go to golf, that's very soft for their old bones, with awd so they don't get anxious in the rain. And for doing all of that, it's amazing. Massive trunk, super comfortable from everything I've read. It just has the unfortunate luck of being the successor to the c190, which was a truly phenomenal sports car for driving enthusiasts. The new c192 is an amazing s class coupe. Just isn't a good successor to the amg GT name.
