Worth getting a manual?

If the car shifts it has lag.  When you shift manually that lag feels less annoying because you're in charge of when it happens.  But electric has no lag and hybrid usually doesn't - when there's only one gear you're always in the right gear.  So to my taste *those* drive the best. > any tips 90% of the smoothness is footwork. Brake is the same, you should already know it. Throttle is different, there's no "release to vaguely glide," at least not in low gear.  Make smooth adjustments when in gear.   When not in gear, a brief kick will speed the engine up.  Don't be scared to kick it fairly hard - avoid holding it on the rev-limiter but otherwise it's fine. Right foot should be on the throttle or on the brake.  While on the brake you should be able to kick the throttle. (note: heel-toe *is* a street driving technique.  The thing you should keep off the street is fast corner entry enabled by trail braking; that is, you can't properly practice trail braking without a controlled environment) Whenever the two halves of the clutch are spinning at different speeds the torque between them is controlled by clutch pressure, not by the speed of the engine.  (These materials follow Coulomb's law of friction.) And the pressure holding the plates together is the spring clamping force minus whatever force you put on the pedal.  A light touch on the clutch commands heavy acceleration (or deceleration) and a heavier touch commands gentle acceleration.  Once the engine speed matches up with the transmission torque will drop off to whatever your right foot is commanding. So you can open the clutch quickly by jumping on the pedal but practice a smooth, lingering release of the clutch pedal. (Once you're in gear and driving around, completely release the clutch pedal to avoid premature wear on the throwout bearing.  But don't rush to reach that point; don't be scared to add a clutch pressure when you don't like something.)
