A Hail Mary Request

Hi everyone, I’m reaching out on a bit of a mission for my dad who passed away this past week, after suffering for two months following a stroke in February.
While he hadn't been in the cockpit for decades, his small-craft pilot’s license was one of his proudest achievements. He lived right near our local airport and could identify your planes by the sound of the engine before even looking up -those rumbles were a daily source of joy for him.
He was a "gearhead" through and through - a former mechanic whose barn is still filled with airport relics and military Jeeps (MVPA members, you know the type). He was an ardent WWII buff and in recent years fulfilled a lifelong dream of flying in a B-17.
I know my dad wasn't a veteran, but he was a pilot in his soul. I’m wondering if any pilots, of any type of craft, local to mid-Michigan (Livingston County area) would be willing to do a simple circle overhead or a "tip of the wing" during his visitation or service this Thursday or Friday. Nothing official or fancy - just one last rumble for him to hear. I have nothing to offer in return, except my deepest gratitude and appreciation.
If you’re interested in helping us send him off with the "music" he loved most, please comment or PM me and I'll share the timeframe and location. Blue skies and tailwinds to all of you.

Just saw this. I’ll fly over later. Look for a cirrus.

Hi everyone. Words truly can’t express how moved I am by the generosity and well-wishes from this community. I’m starting to understand why my dad had such a lifelong passion for flight - it’s clearly a community of incredible people.
My dad suffered immensely these past two months. He lost his ability to communicate effectively, to scroll through his WWII history pages, or even to turn his eyes to the sky. Some of the only times I truly "saw" my dad during his hospitalization were when I read to him from Warbirds or told him about the planes I heard circling over his house. He'd grin widely in amusement when I’d tell him about a plane I'd heard overhead, admitting to the help of Flight Radar, because I couldn't ID the engine by sound alone like he could. Even at his weakest, he was still the expert.
In the wake of his loss, it’s easy to get lost in "why didn't I" regrets. Being able to coordinate this memory with you all provides a genuine sense of hope for my family. It’s a genuine gift to be able to create one last aviation memory with him.
Several pilots have reached out to circle above his visitation, and I am struggling to find words adequate for my thanks.

From one Michigander to another, big love, brother 💙💛

I'm all the way down in NZ unfortunately, but I'll think of y'all next time I'm piloting. Blue skies mate...

This send off idea and the work you’re doing to make it happen are very loving gestures. I’m very sorry for your loss.
Cloudbuster1946@reddit
Condolences on your loss, and respect for this idea
ratthewvrill@reddit
I really hope this can happen. When my grandfather passed, some of his pilot friends did the same thing and it was a wonderful moment. Sorry for your loss, OP
New-Duty-600@reddit
Following for updates. This is wonderful. I love the aviation community
lentil2021@reddit (OP)
It has been a rough few months and an even harder past few days. I am just simply blown away by the support from everyone in this sub and will gladly share updates on how things play out. In the meantime, here's a poor quality picture from my dad's first solo flight in '94.
Map5789@reddit
That dude looks like he'd be an elite BBQ guest. Im sorry for your loss.
DucksEatFreeInSubway@reddit
Lol that's a very 90s shirt. Looney Tunes characters on everything.
vichomiequan@reddit
he reminds me of my grandpa! huge notre dame fan and plane enthusiast. he passed when i was really young but i still have some of the model planes he used to build. i hope someone is able to make this happen for you, OP, and i’m very sorry for your loss 🫶🏼 hugs
lentil2021@reddit (OP)
We still have this shirt, the back cut out post flight and all.
bem13@reddit
Seems like a really cool guy I'd have loved to have a beer with. Sorry for your loss.

Reach out to the "Michigan Pilots" association on Facebook.

My deepest condolences on the loss of your dad. In addition to the above suggestions, there may be a local formation flying club you can find through the FBO. We have one here that practices during the week anyway. Maybe they could shift their practice time to go over during the visitation or service? Wishing you luck with GA community and peace during this difficult time.
engineereddiscontent@reddit
There is a small airport between brighton and milford that might getbyou what youre looking for.
I grew up around there and my childhood was filled with sounds of divebombing. I think a stunt pilot flew out of it. Though that stopped sometime in the late 2000s. But still.
strawzy@reddit
I cant contribute to this but upvoted and commenting purely to keep this at the top, this is an absolutely lovely gesture and I wish you the best of luck friend <3
N40189@reddit
I'll will try help out weather permitting. I'll PM
MattyHurricane@reddit
You should reach out to the FBO or airport administration. They would probably be the best way to put the word out locally to the folks who could make it happen.
jojobdot@reddit
OP this is a great suggestion. If there are small airports near you and you can call or even better stop by, they will be so down for this. Aviators are beautiful saps and this would be such a joy. 💖
Vast-Negotiation9068@reddit
Not only this but it would be safer if they coordinated if more than a few wanted to participate. They could create a route for each to follow so that traffic isn’t zig zagging all over the airspace.
greatlakesailors@reddit
Contact info for that airport's FBO is at https://www.airnav.com/airport/KOZW/A
Almost certainly there will be a pilot or three who will be up at that time and would be more than happy to give him a little send-off.
ncurry18@reddit
Seconding this suggestion. Even just letting one of the line guys know could pay off.
viperfan7@reddit
And any flying clubs too, especially if he was a former member
dlobnieRnaD@reddit
Call the folks at Crosswinds Aviation school, they operate right out of there. I’m positive they’ll find someone. Sorry for your loss, sending love from Hartland.
GrouchyHippopotamus@reddit
I'm so sorry for your loss.
As others have said, try the local EAA chapter. Vans RVs are common experimental airplanes and RV pilots tend to like to fly together, often in formation. A missing man formation is tradition for stuff like this. They might be able to help.
They're not the only ones that do stuff like that so there may be other groups.
Wish I was closer, because I know plenty of people here that would love to help out.
Jealous_Fail6071@reddit
Would do it but I am AOG!
shemusthaveroses@reddit
Boosting for engagement and visibility and shout out to a man of aviation from not too far up the road from me. Hope if there is a cost to this we can all chip in ❤️
mason_mormon@reddit
Post this on Michigan Pilots Facebook group.
freddie54@reddit
I live with my plane 5 minutes away at Brighton airport. I might be able to help. Send me your details.
My concern would be coordinating a number of small aircraft flying in a confined space at the same time. Maybe get the aircraft to stage at OZW then fly a predefined pattern at 5 minute intervals at a predetermined altitude and airspeed.
Euphoric_Cat4654@reddit
Sorry for your loss. Blue skies and tailwinds.
SoundOk4573@reddit
As others have said, EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association). Specifically Chapter 1056 of EAA is based at your (dad's) airport. I won't post here on reddit, but public contact information of the club can be found online. Call up the chapter president, leave a message if needed, and tell him what you are looking for.
I'm 90% or more certain they can and will help out with your explicit request.
Sorry for your loss, and blue skies and tailwinds for your dad.

I'm very sorry for your loss.
Please try and post this in your local sub as well, maybe you will get a hit there as well. I sure do hope you find someone to honor your father.
My dad was also a pilot. His chosen burial plot is in the direct flight path of one of the small local airports near here.
mpg111@reddit
Just want to say that I hope that someone who can help will see your post!
Laxku@reddit
Yep, commenting for visibility. OP I really hope you can find someone for this, it's a beautiful gesture.
Aaron90495@reddit
Same!
Choice-Tiger3047@reddit
Maybe also check with the EAA and see if there's a nearby chapter member who would like to help out. (Experimental Aircraft Association) My dad was a lifelong member and this would have been right up his alley (or runway).
My deepest condolences on the loss of your dad.
Interesting-Bison108@reddit
Omg💖 I really hope someone out there does this❤️
matthewmaes@reddit
@lentil2021 i’d be willing to send a pilot $50 to help defray their costs. Please reach out to me lentil.
letsgotomarsnow@reddit
I would recommend seeing if there is an EAA chapter nearby who could help out. I’m sorry for your loss.

My dad also past two weeks ago.. lifetime of being a pilot where he started in high school and retired just short of 34k flight hours in the corporate segment.. many of those in King Airs.. at hospice the army had four helicopters come over and one did a ‘touch and go’ 300yds away. Totally unplanned.. but no replacing that chop, chop, chop shaking the windows.

That's amazing, what a tribute!
quesarah@reddit
Your best bet is to contact "https://miflightmuseum.org/" They are 20 miles away.
However a flyover generally costs money. I don't know what the answer will be.
qkdsm7@reddit
Sorry for your loss. Gen aviation community via local FBO is likely to have several willing to help you out.

If they cannot do this perhaps you can get him on some sort of honorary CAP flight or something?
PlanetMcFly@reddit
I’m very sorry for your loss. I hope you find someone to help with your dad’s send off.
Hogchief@reddit
At the flight school I used to work at we had this bag that you could fill with ash after someone was cremated. I think it was done for the cost of renting the airplane. They would take up 2-3 family members, open the window and hold the bag out, which would unravel and spread the ashes behind the plane.
Tortex_88@reddit
Commenting for visibility too.
RIP to your dad. Sounded like an awesome guy.

I gave an upvote and comment to drive the engagement machine. Hoping someone with a connection can help out.
