Car Max Scam on Shipping?

Is CarMax running a scam on auto shipping? There seem to be an awful lot of high demand vehicles listed on the Southeastern and Eastern seaboard.

That's odd because the West is such a huge market. Assuming they have a very low rate auto carrier shipping contract, are they shuttling vehicles to the East and Southeast just to add shipping charges going West? Any CarMax employees out there who know anything?

I wouldn’t jump straight to scam. It’s more likely pricing based on distance, carrier availability, and regional inventory imbalance. East-to-West transport can get expensive fast, especially if the car isn’t already moving through a common route. Still annoying, but probably logistics pricing more than a deliberate trick.

The majority of CarMax exists in the South/Southeast since thats where they started from IIRC.

the shipping costs is determined by the average cost to ship a car. Its very expensive regardless if they load up an 18-wheel transporter to move 8-10 cars from 1 dealership to another, or they hire 1 dude in his F-250 with an enclosed trailer to deliver a vehicle to a customer to their door.

I used to work for CarMax. Unless something has changed drastically in the ten years or so since I worked there, they wouldn’t do this because it would cost them sales. Most customers aren’t willing to pay to ship a car unless they’re looking for something specific. Also, they don’t really make any money on the shipping fees. You’re basically covering their costs to ship it.
