What’s happening here?
Just landed on a delta 757-400 at a remote stand at jfk. Spotted these by the tires as we left the stairs. What’s going on?

There to catch the drips. If there ain't oil coming out of it, then there aint oil in it!

Just cans of engine oil. Don't know why they're sitting in that particular spot. Don't worry though; someone will grab them.

Financial-Bug8013@reddit (OP)

Do they need oil every flight?
View on Reddit #85782579

CrazyGuineaLlama@reddit

Yes engines always need oil, but a refill depends on how much gets used during flight.
View on Reddit #85782654

rigol2000@reddit

It's blowing my mind that I never thought of jet engines needing oil. If I think about it, of course they do! But I never saw anyone with an oil can and a funnel in-between flights.
View on Reddit #85962748

AlphaThree@reddit

Depends on the motor. In 2 years on C-130Js I never serviced a single quart of engine oil. A B-52 will burn through several gallons in a normal flight across all 8 motors. Generally Id say a few quarts per flight is "normal" for a heavy.
View on Reddit #85783486

Breck_the_Panther@reddit

I was gonna say, those seem like small amounts for a 757. I used to put cans like that in Cessna Citations and Learjets
View on Reddit #85784209

fly-guy@reddit

I got the a330 and each engine usually gets around 1 quart after each flight. Sometimes a bit more, usually is than that..
View on Reddit #85812206

Freddan_81@reddit

As a trainee with SAS I once worked an A-check on an A330 (not one of ours but from an airline that leased us for A-checks) where the logbook showed that engine no:1 had consumed about 1 quart per flight and engine no:2 had used up about 4. It had been like this for a few weeks and we found it strange that no one seemed to have noticed or cared to investigate, despite the oil consumption being noted at every refill. Well, as we opened up the c-duct we found the missing oil! Charred to an almost glass like matter, caked on the inside of the cowls. As the trainee it fell on me to clean the mess. It wasn’t the best of nights.
View on Reddit #85853336

danit0ba94@reddit

Imo thats pretty good for a big engine like that.
View on Reddit #85831244

hotrodruby@reddit

To be fair.... You're talking about a 12 gallon system vs a 15 quart system
View on Reddit #85792174

fresh_like_Oprah@reddit

The difference is carbon seals vs labyrinth seals
View on Reddit #85826119

hotrodruby@reddit

Not really... The T56 has lab seals and the AE2100D3 has carbon seals. They're both 12 gallon systems and neither really required servicing. I have about 4 years experience on both engines.
View on Reddit #85827833

fresh_like_Oprah@reddit

On the 747 the difference on a long flight was a case of oil for the -200s versus maybe 4 qts for a -400. But now looking it up I find the JT9D-7R4 had carbon seals...so my theory is suspect.
View on Reddit #85837231

Beaver_Sauce@reddit

We had a one quart per flight hour per engine limit for TF-33's on E-3's. (same motors as B-52's). Anymore than that and the motor was pulled out to rebuild for excessive oil consumption.
View on Reddit #85834677

AlphaThree@reddit

Yeah, but you have to remember we had 8 engines and our sortie times ranged anywhere from 7 to 30 hours. It wasn't uncommon for one to come down after a 20 hour sortie and have multiple engines take over 10 cans. Something like a 5,7,12,9,2,15,2,7 would be a normal oil callout. Thats almost 15 gallons lol.
View on Reddit #85835054

Beaver_Sauce@reddit

Thats why I said per motor limit. Not a quart per hour for all 8 engines combined. I have many times put multiple gallons in just across 4 motors and well within oil consumption limits.

Working a major at main hub, id say at least 1 of my 6.5 flights got oil. When I worked ramp, I would hardly notice the tech ops showing up to add oil.
View on Reddit #85784081

nic-sfr@reddit

Depends on the engine. On the 767, CF6s need a lot of oil, while I can probably count on one hand how often I had to service a PW4000 in 4 years of working them
View on Reddit #85811018

SoulOfTheDragon@reddit

Jet engines burn a bit of oil by design, so they are getting oil checks and refills as needed. It's all actively monitored and excess consumption can indicate engine wear, etc.
View on Reddit #85804843

Disastrous-Wall-6943@reddit

CF-6s usually go through about 1/4 quart per hour in flight, PW4000s a bit less. It's normal.
View on Reddit #85786708

danit0ba94@reddit

V2500s (seen on a32x classics) are probably the lowest oil consumption in their class. I'd say 1 in every 5-6 planes i service ever needs oil. And even then its usually 1 or 2 quarts at most.
View on Reddit #85788236

fly_awayyy@reddit

Their competitor the CFMs deff use more lol
View on Reddit #85791569

danit0ba94@reddit

Oh yeah. Pretty much any GE engine chews through oil. Whenever i deal with embraers, it was very rare that i *didn't* have to add anything. Lol
View on Reddit #85796241

Hamstorm@reddit

Oil usage is closely tracked. If an engine typically uses say 1 quart for a set number of flight hours, it's helpful to know if it starts using more oil. They are looking for trends, and if it starts trending badly, they can start planning for an engine swap. Most of the time when a plane shows up at our facility, we'll have to add a bit of oil, and document how much was used in each engine.
View on Reddit #85791993

fredly594632@reddit

I used to put stuff around the MLG (or at least we'll under the a/c) to keep the rampers from driving over it... Could be that.

Fun fact: jet engines don’t get oil changes like your car. They consume oil during normal operation, so it’s not all that rare to see it being topped off at the airport.
