question for truck drivers

why do you guys move out of the way when a truck is right there ? is that a truck thing or is everyone suppose to do that
Gweedo1967@reddit
Everyone should do that.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
never saw any cars do it only trucks so i thought it was a truck thing or something
Celtic-Dragon@reddit
I do it in the truck and thay transitioned over to doing it in my personal vehicle. Even if its not a law where you are driving look at it this way: if you were in the side of the road would you want other people to move over to give you more safe space? Dont know about you but I have a family to get home to and im sure most other people would like to get home to theirs aswell.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
this is why i came here and asked don’t want/need anyone getting killed on my watch
Full-Respect-8261@reddit
Its actually quite simple, you never know if someone is going to get out of those vehicles, or if someone is changing a tire, or working on it. The wind displacement alone from another vehicle, and more so from a semi. Could cause a jack to fall over, knock someone over, or you could hit someone or a door as it opens or closes. Easier to be a decent human and just scoot over.
Rag3QuitnRob3rtGame@reddit
I've personally watched a trailer lift off one of my jacks sure to three wind pressure from people flying past me while I was working on a trailer. Luckily, I hadn't started taking the wheel off and was sliding the stand under the axle so I wasn't likely to get crushed. Still unsettling to watch, though
25_Unknown_Devices@reddit
I usually hold the lane as well if it seems like I’ve got someone behind me itching to pass.
Like I get into the left lane to avoid a break down in the right lane and the car behind speeds into the right lane to go around me between both me and the breakdown, I hate that with a passion. So I’ll keep about 2 foot of the right lane as well, keeping it occupied.
arrynyo@reddit
I've seen other trucks straddle the line when the idiots get jumpy. Like dude there's a reason everybody moved from this lane pay attention. We didn't part the red sea so you can blast through.
ratzm@reddit
EXACTLY!!
There’s a bunch of inpatient assholes out there!!
arrynyo@reddit
But I imagine with all the new technology and monitoring it'll be way harder to do stuff like that, even though it helps keep the idiots safe.
NekoboyBanks@reddit
This is why when I get over, I almost always keep like 10% of my truck in the departure lane as a placeholder lol. I hate when people see it as an opportunity to pass on the right.
The other week, I had some lady floor it to pass but wasn't quick enough and laid on her horn and flipped me off when she finally got ahead; as if I were in the wrong and it was her God given right to pass a 40-ton semi like a moron.
LonleyWolf420@reddit
Yup same.
imgay420lol69@reddit
Jumping on this to mention that even if there’s no flashers on or the vehicle is clearly disabled and abandoned, I’m getting over if I can. My trainer told me he had a former trainee that was driving by one of those (seemingly) abandoned vehicles and someone jumped out in front of the guy.
shadowmib@reddit
Ive broke down on the road and just the wind of a passenger vehicle blowing by in the right lane will shake the truck. In addition if i need to get out its a lot safer when people arent whizzing right by the truck at 90mph.
Also ive seen dumasses who are on the shoulder abruptly pull out and block the right lane. Better to be in the left lane and avoid that stupidity
mindfusion89@reddit
Yes bro! I broke down not too long ago in Texas and another semi failed to move over and slammed into me. Unfortunately, the passenger in the semi that hit me died. Its good u think like that.
B1grich69@reddit
I live in the DFW area, lots of people around here. I can't remember the exact year, I want to say 2017 or 2018, one of those summers had quite a few deaths that were caused by someone crossing over into the emergency lane (some were intoxicated) and hitting people who were stuck there. If I see anyone or a vehicle on the shoulder, I move.
Also, I want to say thank you for recognizing that.
challenge_king@reddit
My trainer also explained that it can knock a car or trailer off the jack if they're changing a tire on less than perfect footing.
Recipe_Critical@reddit
In Texas is a law now
LonleyWolf420@reddit
It's Now a law in all 50 states.. "slow down or move over"..
Pretty sure the specifics was to slow 20MPH under the speed limit for at least florida..
But yeah cuz family could also be the ones on the side of the road as well..
DCHammer69@reddit
Trucks do it because we are WAY more concerned about legalities than the average driver.
The buffeting that happens when a semi passes is SIGNIFICANT which alone can cause problems. Also humans do the most amazing things like open their door on the side of the freeway and step out to look at their flat.
Having an entire lane between yourself and the vehicle on the shoulder is just a really good idea.
mindfusion89@reddit
Its called the move over law. Its for the safety of the person that pulled over on the shoulder and for your safety as well. I got pulled over in my personal car once because I failed to move over, luckily I got off with a verbal warning, I really didn't know but I sure did learn. I move over now every time regardless what vehicle im in. If you cant move over slow down while passing the vehicle.
Mr_Jack_Frost_@reddit
I’ve always moved over when I see a vehicle pulled over to the shoulder out of courtesy. The person may need to walk around the vehicle on the road side, so for safety’s sake it’s always best to move over.
In my state it’s legally required to move over when a tow truck is on the shoulder, as so many tow truck drivers have been hit and killed over the years.
Applying that same logic to every vehicle on the shoulder is the best practice, imo.
jrshall@reddit
For the most part, car drivers are not as observant, or as courteous, or just as generally aware, as most truck drivers.
polarjunkie@reddit
It's literally the law in most states. Some states are slowdown (20 mph) OR move over, some states are move over, and some states are slow down and move over.
DaSaw@reddit
It is with emergency vehicles specifically. But with other trucks, the issue is that we're so much wider than cars we have little choice but to get over. Cars probably should as well, but there are circumstances where they won't necessarily have to, but we do.
ArdenJaguar@reddit
I like watching On Patrol Live. The Hazen Arkansas guys are my favorites. They had one episode where the Chief had pulled someone over on the interstate. A car blew by him without slowing or moving over. He totally went after him a read him the riot act. 😆
polarjunkie@reddit
I got stopped in my semi truck for a roadside inspection and 10 troopers pulled up behind me, I thought someone had snuck cocaine on the truck but they were just nabbing people who didn't move over.
ArdenJaguar@reddit
Good tactic actually. They could station a bait car on the shoulder with a squad behind it. Then have a field day.
Mobile-Ostrich7614@reddit
Most states the law says slow down or move over for vehicles on the shoulder. If you ever blow a tire or need to stop on the side of the highway you’ll understand why people don’t really like a huge piece of metal going 70mph 2 ft away from them.
Fair_Ad5264@reddit
Becase truck drivers are profesional drivers
12GT500@reddit
Wisconsin made it a law, any vehicle on shoulder; you must move over. Other states will soon follow. Too many accidents.
Legitimate_Archer988@reddit
Trucks do it because they are gigantic. Ever had a giant semi fly by you at 75 4 feet away from you?
falardeau03@reddit
I just wanna chime in, a few people have dunked on you for not knowing this or whatever... but at least you had the thought of "But why do they do that?" and came here to ask.
There are countless other people who don't even make it that far. So good on you.
There's driving training and then there's driving training. Plenty of folks can teach you how to operate the vehicle. Then there's defensive driving. Then there's tactical driving, which isn't just for spies, SWAT teams, or secret squirrels, but really can benefit anybody if you can afford it.
Driving is one of those skills it's worth keeping up and improving over time, especially if you're young(er).
ThePeterbilt589@reddit
Well, car drivers are dinguses, so that checks out. Here in Illinois, there are literally signs that state: State Law: Move over or slow down for emergency vehicles or vehicles stopped with flashing lights.
Of course, when I got a blowout on mile marker 28¼ on I-90E near Rockford, quite a few people in cars didn't even fucking bother moving over even though my hazards were on and my triangles were out. I only counted less than a handful of truckers that blew past me when they had an option to get over one lane. When the vehicle you drive on a daily basis can fucking ratio yourself and someone else just by looking at it the wrong way, you tend to take extra caution.
IronSide_420@reddit
Cars don't do it because they're not professional drivers and they barely know how to drive their own vehicle.
SamPackElliott@reddit
In the upper midwest, the ticket you get for not moving over ranges from a few hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars. That's why we move over.
SnowBunnyEinar@reddit
It's actually the law in most places, get over or slow down for vehicles on the shoulder
chaoz2030@reddit
My current job I don't drive semis but I did before. In my work car I move over and also in my personal car I move over now. You are correct most cars won't do it. I think mostly it's because I'd say most cars aren't looking car enough ahead to spot it.
arrynyo@reddit
If you see a bunch of trucks move over to the left, that usually means something up ahead demands your attention. We can see way further down the road than everybody else because we sit so high.
mctwiddle@reddit
its just safer. a semi truck is alot wider than a typical commuter vehicle, alot of places we barely have 6 inches on either side of the truck.
god forbid someone standing on the side of the road trips and falls in front of your truck.
someone could be really close to the line and whip their door open, their arm and probably alot more are gonna be caught.
also, try standing still a foot away from a semi truck going 65 or 70, they displace a very large amount of air as they move and can even make a vortex or low pressue wake behind them that could hurt you or cause you to lose balance.
the first time you meet THAT deer in a semi at 2am will also give you a healthy respect about possibly striking someone, and if its not a risk we can avoid, we should.
OkNorth6015@reddit
I do it in an SUV and if I can't get over I slow down and pay close attention for human beings or animals.
NJNeal17@reddit
Bc they, just like you aren't told any more than the basics of driving. We go thru hours and hours of classroom work before even getting behind the wheel.
And THEN do monthly classroom work to retain that knowledge. 4 wheeled vehicles are given just enough rope to hang themselves with and their license. That's why ~100 people die. Every. Day.
PresentBarnacle6557@reddit
In most states there are signs that state move over or slow down for stopped vehicles with flashing lights. Most of us truck drivers move over for any vehicle on the side of the road.
ybrah37@reddit
Everyone should do it. How do you not know this?
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
driving instructor never told me and i only ever see trucks doing it
Emergency_Ad1152@reddit
Move over or slow down, it's the law.
You never heard that before?
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
i slow down regardless, but i’ve never moved over and i promise i never have heard that before never even seen it on the driving test
Available_Quote_5567@reddit
There are giant signs all over the interstates informing you to move over.
Gweedo1967@reddit
In fairness the law only applies to emergency vehicles. It’s courtesy for all other vehicles. I’d hate to hit a person who wasn’t paying attention and walked out into the traffic lane.
patricksb@reddit
It's anything with flashing lights- including 4 ways- in nearly every state.
ybrah37@reddit
No. Only 19 and DC have a law for every vehicle
patricksb@reddit
Sorry, I meant nearly every state out of those with a move over law protects any vehicle on the shoulder or any vehicle with flashing lights on the shoulder, not just emergency vehicles.
PlastomaGaming@reddit
Not entirely true and most people should actually check because in my state at least it applies to ANY stationary vehicles.
ybrah37@reddit
There are 19 or 20 states that include ANY vehicle on the shoulder.
azurazwrath@reddit
"Caution lights? Move over or slow down its the law" i know is at ohio pa border
Jacktheforkie@reddit
I do it for everyone, people are quite stupid in my area, I’d rather not be the one hitting one, and in the lorry I could easily blow people down with the air wall I’m pushing, when I’m over another lane it’s less likely to cause issues
Stormcell0083@reddit
People are stupid everywhere sadly
Jacktheforkie@reddit
Yeah
Emergency_Ad1152@reddit
A lot of states include any vehicle pulled over.
CrashingTiger@reddit
The wording is kind of vague whether it's only for emergency vehicles. The Ohio transportation page says to move over or slow down for any stationary vehicle with flashing lights of any color. That makes it seem it's for any vehicle, emergency or not.
fffoi@reddit
how are you not paying attention to cars moving 70mph? that sounds like a you problem if you took a few steps out and got clipped. I used to hate working on the side of the road as a medic i would ALWAYS be looking at oncoming traffic
ohhrangejuice@reddit
Bold of you to assume everyone pays attention.
BingBongFyourWife@reddit
I’m fairness it depends on the state. I drive truck across the us and each state has its own way of saying move over or slow down. Some don’t say anything
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
i swear i’ve never seen it before only for trucks telling them to move to the right side
Micro-Skies@reddit
Its called Scott's Law, at least in Illinois. If a car doesn't move over, maybe they get away with it. If a truck doesn't and a cop sees it, then they are much more likely to get a ticket
Defiant-Medicine3014@reddit
Regardless of if you’ve heard it before or not, it seems like common sense and basic human courtesy does it not? If someone is pulled over stopped and you go speeding past them you’re putting them in danger. They could be out of their vehicle doing whatever kinda maintenance on their vehicle that’s needed
Virtchoo@reddit
It’s amazing how many people are saying you should and not why. I’m sure somebody has, but I will elaborate further. If a truck is on the shoulder it’s broken down or at least inspecting what’s wrong. Sometimes it’s a tire, sometimes it’s in the engine bay, sometimes it’s the air or electrical lines between the truck and the trailer. Now imagine the latter. Driver gets out, goes between the cab and the trailer to see if he can find the problem, then comes out from between the truck and trailer and somebody didn’t move over. There will be little to no space. The simple fact is that you don’t know where somebody is going to pop out from that rig or when.
robexib@reddit
WI only requires it for vehicles with flashing lights
FlamingSickle@reddit
Same for Maryland, it’s only for emergency vehicles and regular cars with their 4-way blinkers on. Otherwise any abandoned car left for several days with nothing in it but a white cloth in the window would require everyone to move over, and there sometimes can be plenty of those over here.
Leelze@reddit
Not every state requires you to move over or slow down for non-emergency vehicles. I think it's half, or less, of the states that require it.
FLATL1N3@reddit
Even its not required by law its just common courtesy would you rather have a 2 ton hunk of metal flying by at 70mph be 2 feet or 12 feet away. Ive been on the side of the road for hours waiting on a tow, I think every trucker in here has as well, and I'll tell you i feel a lot safer with the 12ft buffer
BlackStar31586@reddit
So if it’s not required by law you won’t move over or even slow down? You need the law to teach you common sense and safe driving?
Leelze@reddit
I'm just pointing out that "move over or slow down, it's the law" is not law everywhere for every circumstance. It could also explain why OP wasn't taught it because, again, not a law, so their instructor(s) might not bother teaching it.
Go be mad at someone else.
2005focus@reddit
In Illinois if you don’t move for vehicles in that lane you can get a huge fine $14,000? and or 10 years in jail - called Scott’s law after a state trooper who was killed by a car years ago
thecrimsonfucker12@reddit
Isn't that just for emergency vehicles?
CristianKo@reddit
Only trucks do it because stupid law enforcement doesn’t do their jobs just like how they should clear the left most lanes of people not passing by just enforcing the law and giving lanehoggerstickets
BigSchmitty@reddit
To be fair, I think that’s for emergency vehicles.
wickedcold@reddit
Probably in many states but you don’t know where OP is.
JumpyTrucker@reddit
I want to be gentle with you here because you atleast asked the question and most never willl......but aren't you able to put yourself in the "others" position, not just while driving, but in life in general?
Maybe I'm asking for too much, but shouldn't we always try to check our own behaviour through the lense how it affects those around us?
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
sc has it for emergency vehicles not for all vehicles that’s why i didn’t know
JumpyTrucker@reddit
You’re right that some places only require it for emergency vehicles.
But most truck drivers move over anyway because it’s about reducing risk, not just following the letter of the law.
When someone is on the shoulder—broken down, changing a tire, or waiting for help—they’re extremely exposed. Even if they’re technically “off the roadway,” traffic passing at speed creates real danger from wind, spray, debris, or a small mistake.
So the mindset is usually: if I can give them space, I will—not because I’m forced to, but because it’s safer for everyone involved.
Independent_Leg7358@reddit
I believe every state it's required to an extent. Minimum is typically cops/fire trucks. Some also require for wreckers/roadside. Some require for all activity (hazards). Some require it even for parked/abandoned vehicles.
Although I'm trying to figure out how you never figured out that it's a basic common courtesy on any road. Bicycles, pedestrians, people who gotta get luggage adjusted, flat tire change. If you drive ebough, it'll be you one day and wondering why there are assholes not even trying to get over or slow down.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
south carolina law says only for emergency vehicles 🤷🏽♀️
Independent_Leg7358@reddit
Yeah, sad they had to make it a law. Yet people continue to be struck on the roadway. Dot workers are typically at the highest rate. Cops are roadside for a few minutes. Dot might be roadside fir the majority of the shift.
MissingGhost@reddit
I have been to several Canada provinces and USA states that even have signs every few kilometers to remind you of that rule.
princecutter@reddit
It should have been a question on your written test. What state are you in?
radiationblessing@reddit
This was not a question on my test back in 2014. Some states that is not even law.
Wicell@reddit
That is a law in EVERY state, some are move over OR slow down, and some are move over AND slow down. Hawaii was the last state to pass a "Move Over" in 2012.
radiationblessing@reddit
Are you thinking of the law that requires you to move over for emergency vehicles? Every state has that law but we're talking about non emergency vehicles here.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
south carolina, the place i went to only talked they didn’t give a written exam or anything i also didn’t see it when i went to the dmv to take the test
Sky_biker5683@reddit
You're lucky you're in one of the few states I would give most people a pass on not knowing things 😅
In all seriousness, yes there are signs all over everywhere, but that doesn't help because reading road signs is a lost art among most drivers, as is common courtesy and common sense. Not saying you don't possess them, but if you were on the side of the road would you want people to move over and give you space if they were able? Not everyone has been stopped on the shoulder for some reason and felt the Shockwave of even smaller vehicles passing by them at 55+ mph.
Take that coupled with the percentage of people who are driving distracted (whether that be with a phone in hand, hitting buttons on the dash, eating, looking elsewhere, or even daydreaming or otherwise zoned out while their eyes are physically pointed at the road) which I would say is easily above 60% and most likely above 75% taking into account all the things that take proper attention off the road and whatever hazards may exist. Now would you feel comfortable being the one on the shoulder that close to so many drivers who are absolutely not paying any attention to you, nor would even care if something happened?
Now you understand why so many truck drivers are hanging up their keys for good. It really is the wild fucking west on these roads. One of the reasons why some of us would agree with self driving vehicles. "I don't want those things on these roads next to my family". Compared to what's already on the roads with your family? Might as well replace some of these hazards holding steering wheels
Wicell@reddit
The 1st move over law in the US was drafted and enacted in South Carolina in 2000. In 1994 a Lexington paramedic was struck and injured while at a crash scene. At the time, there was nothing on the books about a situation like that, so the State trooper gave a citation to the paramedic 🤦🏾♂️ He then dedicated his time to getting that law passed. It was the predecessor to the well known Scott's Law in Illinois, passed in 2001 after a Chicago Firefighter was struck and killed on a crash scene just before Christmas 2000.
wetstorm95@reddit
Trucks do it more than cars because they seen tragedy on the road far more often. “Move over, save a life.”
True-Count1264@reddit
It’s the law in most states. A state trooper was killer doing a traffic stop. You can look up Scott’s law for more information.
ybrah37@reddit
Not a good driving instructor then. Way too many people have been killed or severely injured because drivers didn't slow down and move over.
RockertheTrucker@reddit
I imagine that people have also been killed when trucks that are on the shoulder for any and all non emergency reasons have pulled back into traffic without sufficient warning.
ybrah37@reddit
I'm sure that's happened. I've had few close calls when trucks and 4 wheelers have done just that.
Radiant_Swan187@reddit
Thats mostly because the average driver is a peice of shit. Its the reason I dont move over for non semi trucks
december151791@reddit
Congratulations, you're just as much of a piece of shit as the rest of them.
busman25@reddit
That just makes you a piece of shit too
LuckyLystrosaurus@reddit

Every single state has a move over law...some include ANY vehicle on the shoulder. South Carolina is behind on legislation to include any vehicle, unfortunately.
https://scdps.sc.gov/drivinginsc/move-over-law
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
ah makes sense probably why it wasn’t mentioned i took my classes in april last year, dont know why i wasn’t told about the move over law
ybrah37@reddit
Moving over for emergency vehicles should have been covered, since it is the law. Like I said, not a good instructor.
Small_Claim_3593@reddit
When merging onto the freeway 1)look and anticipate if you are going to be blocked by a semi from merging. 2) step on it and get ahead or slow down way early. We hate having to slow down to let you in if there is a car blocking us from moving over for you 3) don’t let off the gas until you are like 3 semi truck lengths ahead of us at least. If you pull in front of us and slow down, most of us have stupid AI dashcams that will notify our employers that we are following you too closely and that pisses us off. Imagine if your computer at work notified your manager if you didn’t move you mouse or tap a key for 10 sec
Exnoss69@reddit
Move over for emergency vehicles, it not cause theyre fat. Its for safety. Lets extend that to everyone. Someone could be working around the vehicle and trip or something and fall to the road. As a truck driver its a thing (dont know if actually law but i was taught to always either move over or slow down).
Im_GumbyDammit@reddit
Would you like to accidentally hit someone with your car or possibly kill them while they’re outside their car or truck working on an issue that they are having that caused them to pull over on the side of the road? People who pull off are not thinking fully on the traffic around them. They are worried about what they’re trying to fix. It’s safer to move over and give them room. It’s common sense people!?!? Come on!?!?
KirbyUOR@reddit
It's also the law in a lot of states.
Drakomis@reddit
Because big truckie wuckie no stoppie woppie in timey wimey, so then person-werson go splattery-splatter. But if truckie wuckie move over, no splattery.
Electronic-Affect-93@reddit
It's a curtesy/safety thing. Ya never know if someone might jump out in the road
Aromatic_Sun_4916@reddit
most states you are supposed to slow down or move over for stopped vehicles, emergency or not.
Unique_Arm435@reddit
You must always think ahead. If driver side door opens, then what? Are the steers turned towards the lane of travel, are they pulling out without a blinker? If a big rig, the driver walks from in front of the hood towards the white line, meaning he pops up out of nowhere, then what?
FantasticPainting232@reddit
The worst is when we move over and some entitled fourwheeler or even another truck driver takes the opportunity to pass you on the right. Right next to the disabled vehicle.
Lost-Astronaut-8280@reddit
This pisses me off so much
FantasticPainting232@reddit

Or you turn your signal on like 1/2 of a mile from the disabled vehicle, waiting for an opening and the cars or other semi speeds up to block you from moving over in time.
FantasticPainting232@reddit
Most irksome!
nsandin88@reddit
I remember going east out of Gallup, NM or thereabouts I moved over for a truck on the shoulder and a car hauler that was riding my ass blasted by on the right between me and the broken down truck, while throwing the middle finger out the window. The stupidity hit so hard I went straight past being mad into laughing at them.
ImmortanOwl@reddit
I love when they switch from left to right "ohh that's why he moved over" and switch back left. Idiots.
Mr-_-Soandso@reddit
Kind of like when you notice sirens behind you, so you pull to the side. Then the asshat behind you passes, but their brain starts clicking when they get the big honk.
datgazz07@reddit
I have noticed half the truck on the shoulder are not broken down. They just stopped to take a piss.
_877-CASH-NOW_@reddit
Passed a guy yesterday on an exit ramp who couldn’t even get off the road half his truck was in the right turn lane at the bottom of the ramp. Didn’t even have his hazards on or anything just blacked out at night with half his truck in the actual roadway. What are some of these guys smoking?

Anything could happen on the road. Imagine someone is getting out the car and he or she trips and they fall on the lane you’re driving on and you run their head over. Yeah, sounds brutal but unfortunately it’s life and it goes very fast.
MuphDiesel@reddit

ratzm@reddit
Most states have a law that says everyone is supposed to buy a lot of cars drivers ignore it.
I’ve known or known of 2 people who have stopped to assist someone and lost a leg because of someone not getting over and actually going closer to the stopped vehicle.
I also know of someone (a young off duty firefighter) who had a young wife and baby who lost his life because he was assisting someone on the side of the road and a driver didn’t get over and actually hit him because they went closer to the stopped vehicle.
ALL drivers of any vehicle should get over to give the person on the side of the road safety!!
quackl11@reddit
It's a respect thing to move over no one wants to be on the side of the road for some shifty reason and have cards and semis flying by mere feet away at 60mph even if you think oh it happens to me so I'll do it to others that's like saying oh I was raped as a kid so im going to do it to others. Just be better than the person who wronged you
thatsmymoney@reddit
I almost always go with what is less likely to kill someone. The cost of moving over is almost zero.
aeroxan@reddit
It does add up in blinker fluid.
Mountainear99@reddit
If they even use it
thatsmymoney@reddit
Hey I use my blinker fluid. Blinkers overheating is dangerous and irresponsible. Just ridiculous that we even still have to talk about it in 2026. I heard CDL schools don’t even mention it anymore.
Mountainear99@reddit
No way. is that why tail lights turn orange or even red ??
thatsmymoney@reddit
If you run out and you’re in a jam, just lick them occasionally to keep them moist and that should get you to an AutoZone.
Personal-Damage-7051@reddit
We moved out of the way because it's the law to. Slow down or move over with any vehicles with flashing lights. Recent laws in a few states, and coming to many more. Are saying hazard lights on vehicles on the side of the shoulder. Are "flashing lights" as well. And drivers should move if safe to do so or slow down.
Second. Common sense. What if they have a blown tire on the driver side and need to see how bad it is and how far they can make it to a safer area? I'd rather now run someone over who's just trying to do their job. Professional courtesy. And also something to call out over the CB so drivers coming up behind know about it. And can merge over smoother
Affectionate-Tax-119@reddit
Some states it's required to leave a lane between vehicles on the shoulder and some it isn't, since I don't have a legal library in my head and it's safer anyway, I just move over.
EscapeWestern9057@reddit
Some states have laws specifically stating you're to move over for emergency, maintenance or disabled vehicles.
brettny585@reddit
Some states it is the law to slow down and pull over for disabled vehicles. Anyone in a disabled vehicle on the side of the road like that is in a very dangerous position. Can be very dangerous.

In most states its the law, it also reduces the chance of having an accident, it puts a saferty cushion between you and a potential problem.
JayGT1@reddit
We do it for safety on all thats on shoulder or those competent enough to realize.. a million and one things could go wrong either side of that line...
possibly_lost45@reddit
Well first off in Most states it's the law to get over. And second because I don't want to hit some idiot that trips and falls into the road
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
in sc it states emergency vehicles nothing else
possibly_lost45@reddit
Who cares. If someone's on the side of the road move over and don't be a dick.
yoda417@reddit
I talked to a safety guy at the first place I drove for. He told me how he was on the Interstate and there was a broken down van on the side of the road. He moved over and as he passed the van a young kid that got away from his mom ran around the front of the van into the lane he just left. Without moving over he would've killed the kid. That's enough reason to try to move over in my opinion.
0to60in2minutes@reddit
Risk mitigation.
The closer you are the greater risk of catastrophic danger. Why bother with the risk when you can just change lanes?
There is even an old saying "better safe than sorry" than can be applied
JumpyTrucker@reddit
When I road test truck drivers (for employement screening), I will literally fail them if they do not atleast try to move over when there's a disabled vehicle on the shoulder (I realize it's not always possible)
JumpyTrucker@reddit
Does no one else check their own behaviour through the lense of how it affects others?
I wouldn't like traffic zooming by less than 1ft away when if I'm on the shoulder - so, if I don't like it, I'm going to venture a guess others won't like it either.
Now, apply that logic to wheverever you can in life and maybe we might just have a chance.
CBTwitch@reddit
It’s a safety and a courtesy thing, and in many states, if it’s an emergency vehicle, it’s mandated by law.

I’d love to get over for people in the shoulder but unfortunately there’s almost always someone passing me so I can’t. Had one guy on the shoulder wave at me point for me to move over when I had a 4wheeler in the left lane. Like nope dude sorry you’re getting splashed sucks to suck.

Slow down OR Move over. It is the law in most states. This applies to all vehicles. Although the law is not commonly enforced especially in metropolitan areas.
If you see a vehicle displaying their 4-ways (hazard lights) an emergency vehicle etc... You are required to slow down enough to be able to safely pass that vehicle in the event of an unexpected action.
OR
Simply move over one lane if it is safe to do so.
Howard_Cosine@reddit
What? You couldn’t find an image of a truck on a shoulder lol?
But yeah, in some states it’s the law. Move over and don’t put you or the truck/driver, or a car/driver in any more danger than necessary.

khamibrawler@reddit
It a lot of states I've been to it's the law. Even if they are pulled over enough, the thought is if you're further away from the driver (if they're outside) they won't get hit by debris shooting off your tires. Now if you merge to the next lane you just slow down at a safe speed.
Good and honest question, doesn't hurt to ask.
Immediate_Lunch7713@reddit

Also known as the "Move Over" Law, Scott's Law was named in remembrance of Lieutenant Scott Gillen of the Chicago Fire Department who was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver while assisting at a crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway.
Scott's Law mandates that when approaching any police or other emergency vehicle stopped along the roadway, you must:
Change lanes if possible Always reduce speed, but reduce greatly if unable to change lanes Proceed with increased caution An authorized emergency vehicle under Scott's Law, includes any vehicle authorized by law to be equipped with oscillating, rotating, or flashing lights (under Section 12-215 of this Code) while the owner or operator of the vehicle is engaged in their official duties. This includes emergency vehicles, Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) vehicles, and snowplows, among others.

holysbit@reddit
If youve ever been on the side of the highway, which im guessing you havent, youd know exactly why they move over. Its terrifying to be on the shoulder and have any kind of vehicle fly by at 60-80 mph. Moving over gives some room to the guy on the shoulder who might be somewhere where you cant see or is about to step out of his vehicle or something.
You should move over when you see a car on the shoulder, everyone should but most dont
ExplanationThen747@reddit
I broke down in my truck on the interstate in Virginia. I was trying to disconnect the battery and clean the terminals and whatnot on the side of the road but it's on the driver side. The cars and trucks that blow by you and how close they are is so scary tbh. The wind alone rocks the truck from the vehicles.
It's easier so you give everyone a piece of mind to just move over. If you can't just slow it down until you pass them.
Im-PhilMoreJenkins@reddit
Everyone should do it. Truckers mostly do it because we tend to be paying more attention to whats ahead, and we take up more room, So we gotta give more room too. On top of that many states have move over laws, slow down and/or move over for vehicles displaying flashing lights. You'll see signs when you enter a new state displaying state laws pertaining to driving. That being cell phone use laws, move over laws, etc. They use the term flashing lights and not strobing lights to encompass all types of vehicles, not just emergency (so cars/trucks displaying 4-ways).
The reason you move over is one, courtesy; and two, safety. You want to give the disabled vehicle room because you DONT KNOW if someone is working on or around that vehicle. Someone could walk around the front of that vehicle at any moment and you might clip them with your mirror. People are clumsy, they might be stressed being on the side of the road, so what if they fell down and fell partially into the road? You dont want to hit them.
Give em room. Your instructor not mentioning it is unacceptable imo. Pay attention and move over! Some states will ticket you if you dont.
WHODUNNITT303@reddit

DeadRatRacing@reddit
It's the law in Oregon and Washington. You must move over or slow down 10(?) mph below the speed limit. I have noticed some tow truck drivers tend to slow down and turn on their hazards while rolling past othe tow companies who are in the middle of hooking up to a disabled vehicle.
Ill-Construction637@reddit
I move over for the reasons that have been listed, but I’ve had truck drivers on the shoulder and just decide not to get up to speed, but just jump right out there in traffic!
ExpedientDemise@reddit
Staye law, at least here, is to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles. Any vehicle with flashing lights, like hazard lights, should be considered in an emergency.
hoarder59@reddit
I have had vehicles pull into traffic at the last minute. I have had a kid step out from the back seat of a car to puke ( saved only by his mother flinging open her door.) So close to decapitating them with my mirror. Me moving over also hopefully alerts traffic behind me to a hazard. And, in some states it is the law to move over for anybody while in most states it is the law to move over for law enforcement, tow operators etc.
dtitus74@reddit
So in some states it’s the law to either slow way down or move over a lane for any car parked on the side of the road. Mainly it’s out of safety and courtesy because when we are on the side of the road we appreciate the drivers that move over for us. So it’s either the law, courtesy or safety reason.
84WVBaum@reddit
Not a driver but the nephew, grandson, and son of drivers.
Truckers do that to give space, they've got a lot of weight to get to speed and merge with. Making space is the right thing to do.
Likewise, yeah you should when you can. Outside of major metro areas, in my experience, it is the norm to switch lanes to allow for someone entering the highway. Not only does it let them in, of most often prevents you needing to slow down if they merge ahead.
This disappears in the attitude and tighter traffic found on big city beltways and such. But, most places ya give some grace and then others give you grace later.
BrapsPooShidden@reddit
I remember when my 2500 broke down on the side of the highway towing a 26” trailer. When i was underneath it trying to fix it I could feel which vehicles moved over and who didn’t lol. The entire truck would shake like it was in a hurricane, it was lowkey scary as heck. Also the fear of some dingleheimer not paying attention and slamming into my trailer while i was in the truck was kinda scary too
LethargicMeh@reddit
It's a law called the "move over law". It's to protect those stranded on the road and first responders. It's giving clearance to people tending to that vehicle. All vehicles are required to do that
DumatRising@reddit
If it is safe to do so (you have the space and all) EVERYONE should move over one lane and slow down slightly. Sometimes doing both isn't an option and so doing one is better than doing neither. Some times it's even the law with many places requiring you do one or both.
Do not slam on your breaks and force your way over though just pay attention ahead and if you can get over do so. If you can't just slow down a bit.
The reason for this is that if a person falls over next to the car they could be in the lane. If they are in the lane and a car is also in the lane they won't be anywhere for much longer.
Existing_Many9133@reddit
Never drive in a trucks blind spot, if you can't see the driver in the mirror he can't see you. When a truck passes you, flash your headlights so they know they're ok to merge in front of you.

LH2man@reddit
I was hit on the shoulder of the highway once after hooking up a vehicle to my tow truck. 1987. Me, not my truck. I had just finished hooking up a broken down van, reached for the door handle, and just as my hand touched it something slammed into my back. The passenger mirror of a 1975 Chevy Monza hit me in the tailbone. If I had gotten the door open a few inches it’s a different story. Still, I bounced off the side of my truck, and landed partially in the live lane. I managed to get up before getting run over. Plot twist: I was 18 years old, and the guy driving the Monza was an off duty Toronto cop in his 40s.
That’s why. At most it’s for safety. At the least it’s courtesy.

Charming_Pin9614@reddit
1) For safety, so we don't side swipe the other truck. The trailer can drift because of a bump, the wind, or just a tired driver.
2) The truck on the side of the road might be trying to reenter the roadway and they will be going very slow. We give them a clear lane, and don't have to worry about slamming on breaks to slow down from a truck moving at 15mph as it starts rolling again.
Horus_Whistler@reddit
Only in some states are you SUPPOSED to do it. But in many of our opinions, whether you're in a car or truck, no matter what state, you SHOULD move over.
It's common courtesy. I wouldn't want people blasting right by me while I'm pulled over. So I won't blast right by anyone else that's pulled over.

So everyone is supposed to do it, just in case the car (or people inside) on the side of the road need room for an emergency or whatever. Trucks specifically do it because trucks are big and heavy and if someone opens their door on the shoulder it’s really easy to rip the door off or hit someone getting out.
Just always better to be safe than sorry.
Temporary_Big8747@reddit
Aside from it being a law, semi trucks pack a ton of opposing & trailing wind when passing. These winds are incredibly forceful & can potentially knock a person over.

superthrust@reddit
Everyone should. It gives enough space for the person if they are working on their vehicle.
But if a truck is on the side, and a guy is under the trailer checking his lines or tires or something, then appears out from under the truck, he could be close to your vehicle and be hit. Or trip, then fall in front of your vehicle. Or the wind pushes you a bit too hard and your vehicle partially veers into the parked side vehicle, even a graze.
Especially tow truck drivers deserve the room. They get hit far too often.
And other small cars and family vehicles on the side of the road too. Someone having bad day with a breakdown or flat doesn’t need to have it made worse by being hit or killed

Orion13Quest@reddit
Scenario: You catch a flat on your driver's side tire. You pull on the shoulder to change it. You have your hazard lights blinking, and you think you're okay to work. A number of cars are courteous and move over a lane. An asshole doesn't move over to give you room. They look down at their phone, distracted by something else, and slowly drift onto shoulder and doesn't see you until it's too late. Or it's raining and they don't get over and hydroplane onto the shoulder. That's why.

Everyone is supposed to do it because if theres a reason for the driver to be close to the road or get in and out of his truck its safer for him. Its the same for when someone is pulled over. Its common courtesy that all truck drivers try to give to other trucks drivers. Its not mandatory pe a requirement but its safer for all drivers to do this and give space to a broken down vehichle. "A move over law is a law which requires motorists to move over and change lanes to give safe clearance to law enforcement officers, firefighters, ambulances, utility workers, and in some cases, tow-truck drivers and disabled vehicles."
RamblingswithInoki@reddit
Everyone should move over, it’s a courtesy and safety thing. Unfortunately, not everyone can due to other traffic or some people just don’t care and stay where they are. Imagine you're broke down on the shoulder and your loved one is changing a tire. Would you want any vehicle traveling at high rate of speed 4 feet away from them? Rather it's inattentive driving or unintentional swerving, too many things can happen. Be considerate and move over.
If you move over for police why not move over for everyone else?
robRigginsstar@reddit

You are supposed to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles. I’ve always considered this to include vehicles in an emergency situation as well.
we get over because we don’t want to kill someone. It’s also a courtesy to the people broke down to help reduce anxiety. Having a steady stream of full speed semi trucks rocking your car every half a second is hell on the nerves.
25_Unknown_Devices@reddit
I knew an older feller named Gary when I was a kid. I’d help him around his car lot detailing cars and stuff.
He was on his was back home one night from out of state when a cardboard box blew out the back of his pick up truck. He gets turned around and goes back to get it, when he comes up to the area it blew out, he stops. Put his hazards on and a safety vest.
Got out , picked the cardboard up and stuck it in his truck.
Around this point in time, 2 semi trucks are traveling his way, the second one fairly close to the first. Neither get over and Gary is standing behind his pickup, waiting for them to pass to get back in.
The backdraft of the first truck, caused Gary to loose his footing and fall into the roadway, directly into the path of the second truck.
MacandMandy69@reddit
You never know when a truck parked on the shoulder will come right out in a lane of traffic, and then expect everyone to just go around him. 9 times out of ten when another vehicle hits a truck from behind, this is the reason why, and may I add that the person that runs into the back of the truck is paying more attention to something else, (phone) and not paying attention to driving.

I’ll tell you this. Having to change a flat tire on the side of the road sucks. It makes me feel a little safer when people get over. Until you’ve experienced roadside issues on a busy interstate or highway you’ll never know the relative feeling of safety.
BouncingSphinx@reddit
Everyone should, it's safer for the person or people in and/or around the car to have some space between them and the traffic passing.
Semi trucks do it more than other cars because they're a large vehicle and create much stronger wind currents with their passing than a car does. In a car, you can absolutely feel the wind from a passing semi rocking the car if they're in the lane directly next to you.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
this is one reason why i thought it was only a truck thing because of the wind power they possess, i understand it now because i’ve sat in the turning lane multiple times and felt cars just whoosh by

Turns out the passenger of the vehicle was outside of the car taking a piss. He was drunk and got too close to the highway just as that trucker passed by. He got hit and died instantly. The truck driver was charged with involuntarily vehicular manslaughter. Whether it's illegal or not, you should definitely try and move over.

Thanks for asking! Other things that help are 1. Enter the freeway at freeway speeds, then put distance between you and other vehicles, either by slowing down or speeding up. 2. Pass trucks QUICKLY, and don't pull back into the right lane until you can see the entire truck in your rear view mirror. If approaching a red light, don't pull back into the right lane at all. 3.If you see a truck turning towards you at an intersection, stop short to let them use your lane. They need it. 4. Trucks are governed, usually, but they still need to pass sometimes. Have patience and let them get back over, do NOT pass on the right. Those are the main things I see EVERY SINGLE DAY, that I wish more people knew.
Georgiaboy03@reddit
I see alot are commenting about laws, or air flow, or line of sight. While all have it merit, the only reason you need to get over for not only trucks, but any vehicle sitting on the shoulder is that you never know when someone will walkout from the front or back of their car, or stand on the side, you never know what they will do. Walk out, fall, trip, or if something comes from under your wheels and hit them in the head killing them. People are stupid and do stupid things, so always cover your ass and keep away from them. Thats the safest way to live and drive.
RandomMansThoughts@reddit
Look up the "Slow Down or Move Over" law. We dont do it just bc it's a law, we do it bc it minimizes the chance of us hitting someone on the shoulder. A broke down car or truck shouldn't be the reason someone dies. If you can't move over, slow down to 45 or 50 mph. Some states have a set speed while others say slow down significantly. This is why you should always look as far down the road as possible to see these issues before it's too late. Good luck and keep trucking 😎

We are a traveling blind spot for those following behind us. It's especially important to give anyone following us a clear view of stopped vehicles whenever possible. Experienced truckers will "drag the white line" it's a move that leaves more room for others on the road, traveling with or against us. If you're following close in the draft and the lead truck doesn't move over, there's a high probability of a collision between the following vehicle and the stopped vehicle. This all boils down to safety and courtesy
pixel_knightt@reddit
Pull over right there and sit for 5 minutes. That will answer your question :)
coperifaldia@reddit
Alot of states of a move over law and actively enforce it. If you dont, a trooper can give you a fine not only for not moving over, but for distracted driving.
DrSideShowbob@reddit
When your time comes and your vehicle is disabled. You will thank each and every person who moves over. Car, simi or cop you should always try to move over or slow down.
Could you imagine being broken down and our big ass trucks are a foot or two away from you and we are full steam ahead? Would be scary as hell
carhauler54@reddit
State law in many states. Move over for emergency vehicles or vehicles with hazards lights on.
mctwiddle@reddit
its just safer. a semi truck is alot wider than a typical commuter vehicle, alot of places we barely have 6 inches on either side of the truck.
god forbid someone standing on the side of the road trips and falls in front of your truck.
someone could be really close to the line and whip their door open, their arm and probably alot more are gonna be caught.
also, try standing still a foot away from a semi truck going 65 or 70, they displace a very large amount of air as they move and can even make a vortex or low pressue wake behind them that could hurt you or cause you to lose balance.
the first time you meet THAT deer in a semi at 2am will also give you a healthy respect about possibly striking someone, and if its not a risk we can avoid, we should.
Far-Implement3231@reddit
In alot of states now it's mandatory to move over or slow down when a vehicle or emergency vehicle is on the shoulder. And it's plain common courtesy
Sorktastic@reddit
In some states it is the law that you, even 4 wheelers, have to move over if there are flashing lights, im assuming that means hazards as well, on the shoulder. In states where it is not required it is a safety thing. There have been quite a few people that have been killed on the shoulder because they have fell into the driving lane from the shoulder for one reason or another. As a part of safety training for a company I used to work for I had to watch a video of a driver running over a mans leg because he, the man under the vehicle on the shoulder, didnt realize his leg was sticking out in the driving lane. Obviously the leg being run over isnt shown in the video, but you do see a noticeable bounce before the driver immediately stops
JackyOctavius@reddit
Imagine there's someone walking around the vehicle stopped on the side, and they happen to trip. You just killed somebody.
caseylain@reddit
I'm glad you asked. It's frustrating how many times drivers block me in because they don't understand why I need to get over.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
yeah, i’ll start moving over now, i usually just slow down because i was told you guys park there to sleep
StreetsRUs@reddit
Jesus fuck. Are you guys that out of the loop now? Can you not imagine what the other guys’ shoes feel like?
Koala_Hands@reddit
No no no, people should not be and likely are not sleeping on the breakdown lane of an Interstate. If a truck is there they are usually broken down or relieving themselves. Amount of air displaced by a 13' tall 8' wide Semi traveling at highway speeds is a lot and would shake the ever loving snot out of someone sleeping all night.
You move over as a courtesy, you're operating thousands of pounds metal, at high speeds you don't want to be really close to a parked vehicle or a person that might be outside, trying to troubleshoot a breakdown.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
oh well now i feel even more dumb, i was told years ago that they pull over on the side, whip out a mattress and go to the back to take a nap
Koala_Hands@reddit
There is some truth there, many many truckers do sleep in the back of the cab, but they pull into designated rest areas or truck stops to sleep. Now I have slept on the shoulder of an on-ramp before when I was extremely tired and couldn't make it somewhere safe, but even on an on-ramp you hear everyone that passes getting on the interstate.
RockertheTrucker@reddit
Unless they're foreigners. This automatically makes the shoulder their parking area. Don't expect them to use flashers or give warning when merging back into traffic either.
First_Light_6418@reddit
Thats a fun way to have your door knocked on by the dot/ state patrol 😅
MssMoodi@reddit
Here in Oklahoma it's a law you got to move over for emergency vehicles and vehicles that are getting on the freeway from a ramp.
RJonesLore@reddit
For most states, it’s the law to move over for any vehicles with their hazards on.
_877-CASH-NOW_@reddit
As others have said, everyone should do it. I was the passenger in a car once with a friend driving and he didn’t move over for a disabled vehicle. Just as we were passing, his spare tire rolled into our lane and we started fishtailing at 65mph. Fortunately my friend was able to regain control but that could have been really bad. Hundreds of people are struck in the breakdown lane every year. Giving them space is a defensive driving move.
J9Dougherty@reddit
We should all be slowing down or moving over for stopped vehicles. Not just tow trucks, fire, police, any vehicle. Fun fact where I live it is state law that the speed limit decreases by 15mph in the lane closest to a stationary vehicle on the shoulder, and that rule is fairly likely to be on the books in your city or state as well.
Arnhildr-Fang@reddit
3 main reasons.
First, every state has some version of a "move over" law, a law that states when a vehicle with flashing lights is on the shoulder, move over or slow down". Now, us truckers aren't paid by the hr, we're paid by the mile. Slowing down repetitively takes money off our paychecks, so its easier to move over
Second, safety. The same reason the law exists. If an idiot on the shoulder opens his door as a semi is bearing on him, BEST case scenario is his door is gone...worst case is hes gone too... plus, if drivers get distracted & drift, they're likely to plow any vehicle on the shoulder...take a look, youll often seen fresh dmg on abandoned interstate vehicles facing the road.
Lastly, respect...next time youre broke on the interstate, watch & feel the sheer mass of the semis that dont move over...youll be REALLY thankful of those who do after your 2nd close-pass
Elite_Slacker@reddit
Because you can very easily kill someone on the shoulder. Even more easily when your vehicle is the width of the whole land and 40 tons.
Lopsided-Walk-7743@reddit
its just common sense.
some people absently back into the road and it only takes one person being dumb to make a mistake you cannot come back from.
what if you blow a tire at that very moment? or a gust of wind hits you? you might veer a few feet into a person changing their own tire.
some people just barely park off the freeway too and your tractor trailer only has like 1 foot of room on each side in the lane lines. it takes 3 seconds to move from one side to another and the alternative could be maiming someone for life of worse.
edsavage404@reddit
When you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road you dont move over? Same concept
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)

Frogspoison@reddit
Everyone is supposed to do it for any emergency vehicle in all states, or vehicle in an emergency in most states. Tow Trucks and roadside repair count as an emergency vehicle, so any truck on the side will likely have an emergency vehicle in front.
Yes, your instructor didn't mention it to you. Your instructor likely didn't tell you much above and beyond the basics. You don't need much to get the basic license.
Do you WANT to risk hitting and killing a guy working on the truck? Move over a lane, move back when you passed.
RollinHellfire@reddit
When a vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a high speed motorway... especially a truck (and sometimes it can happen on the inside shoulder by the takeover lane) it is only sensible to give a little space. If you're doing a reasonably low speed you can still splatter a human if you're too close. Just imagine someone opening a door while you're passing by. And a large truck can hide a person behind it surprisingly well...
So, yes, we like to give an entire lane free when we pass a standing vehicle, because of these exact safety reasons. Plus, because a 40 ton block of steel and rubber creates an immense air wave at 80-90 km/h at close range. It can knock you off your ass or toss you under the next vehicle coming after the truck.
VonteHD@reddit
Iirc the law here in Texas says move over or slow down to 20 under the speed limit when someone is on the shoulder. I’d say you only see trucks do it because they are professional drivers and they understand the need.
moveslinkuei@reddit
Just move over so you won't accidentally kill someone. Nothing more nothing less
ntbirk@reddit
It's basic highway safety. I do it in my truck and in my Jeep, for my own safety just as much as the person on the shoulder. This is basic common sense and really shouldn't be to be taught.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
i mean i was only told to move over if there’s a cop there, nothing about other vehicles
Dknowles391@reddit
We've been that driver on the road. Its law in some states, but it's also courtesy as we send that driver. Do you drive 600 miles a day you're going to eventually break down on the road on the highway. And the last thing we want is for someone to walk out from around the vehicle or somebody to open a door and for us to hit them
hugothebear@reddit
Trucks going 60 displace a lot of air. It’s courtesy to not shake them.
Also, safety, i try to move over when someone is pulled over. If not safe to move over, slow down
K-Dog7469@reddit
Its the scooch over law.
Content4OnlyMyLuv@reddit
I have always gotten into the next lane if possible, but definitely slow down. I did it before it was a law in California (im from CA) and im pretty positive I learned from watching truck drivers (i am not a trucker driver) because it made sense to do. Safety and all.
humpthedog@reddit
It’s common courtesy and is a law in many states. It honestly should be a law in every state with license suspension mandates.
esneedham12@reddit
If you’ve ever had to stand on the shoulder of a highway you’d understand the importance of other vehicles moving over. Sometimes you can’t switch lanes so that’s why you slow down.
No_Ocelot4019@reddit
Some states its a law to move over for ANY vehicle with emergency lights (in my opinion hazards/4ways can be argued as an emergency light) and as a high percentage of us travel coast to coast its easier to just move out of the lane next to the broken down vehicle or emergency vehicle than debate with ourself of we are in one of those states. Past that (this is where I hope everyone's head is) if you've ever been stopped on the shoulder for any reason in a semi much less have to be on the traffic side of your semi its unnerving as hell for cars to go by at highway speeds much less another semi... safety because if you havent been there you will be if you drive long enough and heaven forbid the person walking around the vehicle falls into the lane...theyre not making it back home. So personally I do it everytime its possible to do so without hitting another vehicle or causing a wreck and if I cant move over im dropping a considerable amount of speed.
Djs2013@reddit
Absolutely! It's the law in lots of places. It also common courtesy. Either move tf over, or slow down and toss on the flashers til you pass safely.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
i slow down, but i guess moving over is more beneficial, so i’ll start doing that
Miserable-Bridge-729@reddit
A truck , nearly any vehicle really or emergency vehicle takes up the whole breakdown lane. Anybody opening a door or stepping too close to the lane could get clipped by our wider vehicles plus the force of the wind pressure on the vehicle or emergency personnel from our trucks can be dangerous for them. Good if everybody did it but even more important for us to do it.
CaseyJones37@reddit
Semis too close can do weird things with wind.
Still a good idea to clear the lane if you have the space.
roundtwentythree@reddit
You used a picture of Ontario, Canada so I'm going to go with their laws.
https://www.ontario.ca/page/driving-near-emergency-vehicles
Specifically check the "Penalties" section. Everything is ramped up for commercial drivers, at least in the states. Move over laws are ubiquitous in North America. I cant speak to Europe because their roads are generally much narrower and maybe they don't have room for moving over, but I'd bet good money they at the very least have slow down laws if not move over as well.
This is a law for literally everyone in North America is supposed to abide by in one form or another. While everyone is supposed to do it, truckers do it because its an easy way to lose your CDL and get hit with massive fines. If they actually started pulling class Ds for not doing it, people might actually start giving a shit about it.
Keep in mind that, yes, this is specifically for emergency vehicles. But if its worth doing for emergency vehicles is worth doing for the rest of humanity as well. Your simple gesture can save a life. You should do it for anyone, highway patrol, tow truck driver, broken down car, truck, literally anyone and everyone. Why blow past someone at 70mpg from a food and a half away when you can be 12+ feet away? All it takes is for someone to trip at the wrong time and congrats you've now killed someone when all you had to do was move over a lane at zero cost to you.
And GL if that person you killed was a trooper.
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)
I live in the United States i just found a random photo online
Redsoxdragon@reddit
The safety reason is that you move over because you never know if someone's gonna step out on the roadway.
The courtesy reason is if someone is sitting around, they don't get rocked by the wind wash of a truck every few seconds.
The legal reason is that if there is a service truck or a cop parked in front of the truck, it's the law to move over
Leaf-Stars@reddit
I move over whether it’s a truck or a car and in many states it’s the law to move over if an emergency vehicle is parked there as well. It’s simply the safest thing to do.
RetentiveCloud@reddit
Anyone pulled over in this lane may decided they’re getting out of their vehicle as soon as you can hit them purely by accident. Do it so you don’t kill a driver, a tech, or some idiot not paying attention.
Redmistseeker@reddit
I seen a guy walk around his rig on the shoulder and get smoked by a semi on I80 near the 60th street exit in Omaha, Ne about 15 years ago. Dead instantly, shot him about 4 lanes over into more oncoming traffic. I slowed down to help because traffic had stopped and as I rolled up to him I just kept driving. There wasn't anything I was going to help him and it was obvious. Just slow down or move over.
wwwwweeeeelllll@reddit
When you get the chance pull off on the shoulder and wait for 5 or 10 minutes. You'll have a few cars and even trucks not slow down or move over.
The wind that vehicles produce (and especially trucks) will be enough for you to feel the danger you are in.
I need to stress that this is dangerous. I know it just told you to try it some time, but don't actually pull off to the shoulder unless you really have to and if you do put your flashers on and open the passenger side doors and or trunk to increase the visible area. Opening doors will also let people know the vehicle is potentially occupied and not just disabled and empty.
hitm4n1985@reddit
I honestly think it's a smart decision to post here. It's a courtesy thing and respecting other motorists. Some of us big guys even pull over to help. But those days are becoming few and far between....
AffectionateSoup8035@reddit (OP)

hitm4n1985@reddit
It's because Americans are ignorant and don't get proper training on how to operate a vehicle aside from a parking lot.... Sorry being honest. The license and training here is like 1 step above crayons and drawing
BigSchmitty@reddit
If you’ve ever been on the side of the road when a truck goes by, you’d understand. First of all, it’s scary having a truck doing 65+ mph right next to you. Next, the wind between the truck and the vehicle on the side makes for some intense shaking, making it even more uncomfortable to be there. On top of that, if someone is pulled over it’s likely there’s an issue that would cause them to exit their vehicle. No driver wants to take out a person because they hopped out at the wrong moment. It’s just way safer for everyone to just move over.
duckbobtarry@reddit
It's definitely ideal that you move over for any vehicles (truck, car, bike ect). Where I live, its not law unless its an emergency vehicle. But I will say that its basically common courtesy in driving and other drivers will judge your character for not at least attempting to move over.
Milbrethyr@reddit
Primary reason is safety. Too many times I've seen cars do everything right and pull over with hazards, but then step out of their vehicle in a hurry because they're preoccupied with something going on with their vehicle or themselves and just simply not think. If I don't clip them in a truck, the wind from my passing by might just knock them off their feet.
Secondary reason, and this applies mainly to trucks. If you're on a busy stretch, there is no safe way to merge back on if there is a continuous flow of traffic. Takes a lot to get up to speed. Also, with cars, almost no one in a car will get any speed before merging back. They don't judge vehicles in the right lane well at all and will pull out into the road without even going 10mph.
First_Light_6418@reddit
Its the law you have to get over or if you cant slow down. Whether in a car or a truck. You never know what could happen someone could get out of the vehicle. They can be in front of the vehicle and you dont see them. Then they walk out to the driver side. Someone can trip and fall into the freeway… Anything could happen its best to take precautions even if everyone else around you isnt.
First_Light_6418@reddit
The law is in the driving manual as well I learned that when I was first learning to drive.
Shut_It_Donny@reddit
Safety and courtesy.
I did it in any vehicle for any vehicle.
You never know if someone is standing in front of it and might step out. Or they may pull into the road trying to merge without looking.
TopDogTransport4731@reddit
I move out of the way not only because it’s the law its also for safety as sometimes someone might open the door suddenly or step out to inspect the vehicle or go underneath it etc. also you will have that one absent minded driver that doesn’t know how to signal and merge into traffic creating a dangerous traffic situation
ZealousidealLie5662@reddit

RoadRatzzz@reddit

bmf1989@reddit
It's just safer to give to give anyone parked on the shoulder space if you can. I've seen trucks pull off the shoulder with zero regard to approaching traffic far too many times to just trust that they're gonna stay there. They might also be out of the truck walking around.
It's just generally a good idea to create distance if you can

Everyone should move over, if you’re completely boxed and just slow down. There most likely will be people walking around the stalled vehicle trying to remedy the situation. Such_Pickle_908@reddit
My state, anyone in the emergency lane with flashers on you movel over or -15 mph. I always move over unless they have a sticker to tow.
If you have ever stood on the side of the interstate, you'd understand real fast why tout need to move over.
MiIarky22@reddit
I move over depending how close they are to the shoulder. I don't want to cause any unnecessary accidents
gelema5@reddit
When you can safely move over, you should. If a trucker happens to slip and fall coming out the truck, you could hit them at full speed (even slowing down a bit, it would still be fatal). People can be stupid sometimes, and accidents happen. So it’s the right thing to try to prevent accidents.
Also if they swing their truck door open recklessly it could hit your car and cause YOU to crash. If they’re a full car width away from the side of the road where they definitely wouldn’t hit you or get hit by you if they fell over, then you don’t have to get over.

jinkeeez@reddit
It’s the safe/courteous thing to do. ESPECIALLY if there’s people in or outside the car. Sometimes it’s just an abandoned car and you can tell because it’ll have a neon green or orange or something sticker on it. For those I’d still try to get over, but if I wasn’t able to it didn’t feel like as big of a deal. But when there’s people involved? Yeah, I’m getting tf over and if no one will let me get over then I’m slowing down.
drinkslinger1974@reddit
From what I was told, it’s for safety, not only for the truck driver, but also for yourself. If you blew a tire and your steering wheel was jerked over to the right, you could either hit the Mansfield bar, fuel tank, slide under the trailer and have your top half removed, or you could hit the driver. I’ve been broken down on the side of the road and caught strong enough wind to make me lose my balance for a second. That’s also why if you see a vehicle pulled over or broken down, get in a lane that lets a truck in the center lane.
rsqx@reddit
trucks that are taking piss on th side of road create havoc for this reason, it should only be emergency

I drive with an Entertainment/Show convoy and whoever is the lead driver at the front will call out over the radio “Stalled vehicle on the right/left shoulder” to alert everyone else…then all 12 vehicles will simultaneously activate their turn indicator and change lane if clear, then merge back to the right lane after passing the vehicle on the side of the road.
And no, this type of “rules of the road” thing was not taught in my CDL school I attended in 2023. New Mexico was the state. The focus in class was always about learning the Pre-Trip and how to handle the vehicle on the road and the parking lot maneuvers that the examiner may have you do.
Not only are the rules of the road not covered unless someone asked, but even hitching up to a trailer was SHOWN as an example only because the instructor needed to move a trailer. It was explained, but not taught as a “lesson” since they only teach what the examiner will test for. They even explained why they didn’t cover the operational basics of trucking simply because “the company you go to work for will teach you the way they want it to be done” so you don’t have to unlearn anything.

xoutlawtrucker@reddit
Its courtesy. If you have ever been stopped on the shoulder and a truck passes at 60+ it rocks the hell out of you, it also kicks up all kinds of dirt and debris. A person could be out there fixing something or checking on something and you will be too close. Kids or pets can be out there running around, a person can touch something hot and jump out into the road instinctually, something can roll, fall, bounce, or run into the road.
For the 2 seconds it takes to get out of the way can avoid a lifetime of nightmares and headaches.

Jimjam916@reddit
If someone is on the side of the road, it's usually for emergency reasons and there's likely to be people outside of the vehicle. Moving over greatly reduces the risk of crashing into the car or running someone over.
claster11@reddit
Really everyone should, shouldn’t even be a thought but with truckers it’s a respect thing too and we know what it’s like to be on the side of the road broke down and people flying past you just a couple feet away and please especially with Emergency vehicles/Construction vehicles and tow trucks MOVE OVER!

Someone could get out of the truck or step out from in front of it at any second. If I stay in the right lane, then one wrong twitch of the wheel or a sudden wind gust to the right, and they could die.

It greatly reduces the slipstream they feel. Cars are a lot smaller and dont produce the same level as a truck. If its too busy to move over safely, I just slow down
neural-glitch@reddit
Physics. The air flow around a moving object inherently has low pressure. This low pressure, at the right speed, distance and the weight of the person who’s being passed on the shoulder, can inadvertently pull them into the lane you were just in, putting them in a dangerous position to get run over by an unsuspecting oblivious driver who was inevitably tailgating you.
This is also the same reason why you’ll see trucks unwillingly get closer to each other when they pass one another. The low air pressure. It’s exponentially more powerful with larger vehicles. So get the fuck over because physics.
Baconated-Coffee@reddit
It's a law for emergency vehicles (which includes tow trucks) but we do it for all vehicles because it's safe and courteous. If you were broke down on the side of the road, would you want a bunch of 80,000 lb vehicles flying by two feet from your face?

Most states require you too. It's a safety thing for in case a person walks around and is then close to the road way. Plus trucks in general take up a whole shoulder and I don't want to smack a mirror on their trailer if it's that tight, let alone possibly hit a person or even road debris that get kicked up and into that person.
And it's not just trucks. I move over for cars if they have their hazards on or I see people moving around outside of it. It's the law and courtesy

I move out of the way, if I have room, if anyone is on the shoulder other wise I'll try to slow down some. Police, tow truck, truck, or a car. I don't trust the last two and the first one it's part of the law. Cars and trucks will just try to get on the road without picking up any speed or try to get out of their vehicles and they'll be parked too close to the white line. I've been cut off a couple times because another truck is speeding and caught up to me on my left and the guy on the shoulder will just pull on going 10 mph.

common sense and courtesy, you don't want a truck or any other vehicle to blow your doors off going +65mph when you're broken down or pulled over

If they are on the shoulder (your circle), they could step around the front of your truck and be the proverbial bug on the windshield. Or even, if they aren't paying attention and open their door....blam!!!!. Also as with any vehicle on the shoulder, it's a courtesy to move over. Something that is a lost art in the driving world.
