SEAT QUESTION

Using this seat for an off road buggy, I know it’s not ideal but I got it for a killer deal and I’m on a budget. The hip width is pretty good, but the rib bolstering (highlighted in yellow) feels like it is digging into my ribs pretty good. I know it’s not in the buggy yet so it’s not final wheel location, but I don’t see it changing much.
Is this seat simply not going to work, or is this normal for this style seat? Any remedy like adding padding over the aluminum frame?
Thanks!

Do you already have offroading experience? I wouldn't want that level of side bolster in a vehicle where the vehicle and I are bouncing around in for potentially hours. Any small discomfort will turn into a huge one. That is true for both my race and recreational offroad vehicles.
With all of the work that goes into properly mounting the seat and building a cage to fit it, etc., it is worth it to do it right the first time.

If you’re harnessed in properly you shouldn’t be moving enough to hit those bolsters hard. People rarely strap in tight enough.

So if you aren’t worried about certifications, would modifying the seat (in a safe and correct way) be an option in your opinion?
isaacmckinney@reddit
If you're not planning any certification and you're not going to be wearing a helmet and a full harness cut that shit off and pad out the cut so you don't bleed out because of a bur when you're 100 miles from a hospital. You're overthinking it. If it's uncomfortable sitting stationary it'll be unbearable and damaging going over rocks

Yeah, the seat is actually a lot more comfortable than I thought it would be besides the rib bolsters (I actually just sit in it sometimes for a while and think about my project or whatever 😂). As far as cutting it, I think it will most likely come down to that but I’m gonna wait till it’s in the chassis. If I cut it I’m gonna do it the right way and make the cut curved and put some sort of trim/crimp over the edge like the oem seat has, and then adjust the cover. I don’t care if I screw it up because it was only $50, I’ll just get a new one then.
I’m definitely wearing a helmet and harness tho, don’t get crazy. This is a proper vehicle im just not worried about being race ready. It wont be a death trap.

That’s a containment seat for a drag car, wrong application
You want a suspension seat that won’t beat the hell outta you lol
garbage_garage7@reddit (OP)
I mean it’s for a sprint car, and I plan on taking corners hard so I think the applications are kinda similar. It’s not for a trail rig
Boilermakingdude@reddit
The seat is for straight lines and just keeping you in it. You want a different sear dude.
CommandoSolo@reddit
I assume since you got it for a deal and the padding is trashed the cert is expired? I only ask because I’d be inclined to sell it or trade it for literally anything else.
Not knowing what you’re building but if you want a cheap seat just go wander your local pick n pull and sit in a bunch of passenger seats and find what you like best.
garbage_garage7@reddit (OP)
It’s called a crosskart if you want to look it up. Not looking to do any legit racing tho so certifications arent a big deal for me

It's aluminum bend the metal away from your body a little
whoremoanal@reddit
Being aluminum is a good reason to not bend it.
garbage_garage7@reddit (OP)
It’s digging into my arms, not my body, if I was unclear. Also, I did try bending it in a little, and while it might’ve helped some, it’s surprisingly stiff and not easy to manipulate.
IronGigant@reddit
It's supposed to be stiff, it's part of your safety equipment lol
Get some 2x4s and a scissor jack and persuade it until you fit properly.
Aleutian_Solution@reddit
Just bend them out a bit. Got the same issue with the stock car seat I have in my car.
garbage_garage7@reddit (OP)
Not worried about certifications, it’s for fun
Aleutian_Solution@reddit
Cut it and send ‘er then bud.
nhbruh@reddit
you know what to do
lunaticmagnet@reddit
It was designed for sometime with a longer torso. Just cut it down where it's digging in.
Alternatively, put more foam in the bottom to boost yourself up more.

I find Kirkey’s to be miserable at the best of times. Ill fitting Kirkey’s are even worse. Ill fitting Kirkey’s in an off road vehicle where you should be running a suspension seat is something I would not wish on my worst enemy. Go buy a mastercraft suspension seat for a few hundred bucks and enjoy your vehicle when it’s done.
Expert_Mad@reddit
The seat might have a size limit. I have some MOMOs in my Mustang that are only rated for a 34” waist and I’ll tell you, it ain’t lying. I doubt putting them in will change much and adding padding will make it even smaller. Just remember, these seats are designed for keep you upright and immobilized in a crash so being snug is normal.
