Spent a week in South Dakota (KMDS) getting my Multi Add-on. They had a nice fleet of 1950s Pa-23 Apaches, It was a great time.
hunter8333@reddit
Got my multi in the same bird! Did Morris ever tell the story about acquiring that one? It’s a great story
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
Small world, huh? He didn't, but I'd love to hear it if you can recall
hunter8333@reddit
Dude was hiding it from his wife during a divorce, they found it behind a false wall in a warehouse years after he died lol
vyqz@reddit
so, with people waiting months to get a check ride, how does one spend a week at a destination school and get a check ride instantaneously?
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
Owner of the school is the in-house DPE. I finished training in 3 days, had to wait another 5 for the checkride.
Manha77anProject@reddit
> Owner of the school is the in-house DPE.
This stuff is wild to me. Such a massive conflict of interest, but also such a great setup if you are a student. It's nice to have a one-stop shop for the training and checkride.
SMELLYJELLY72@reddit
oh absolutely. the way i understand these operate is there’s another instructor who provides the sign off, but the instruction is usually provided by the dpe, or by an instructor who was hand chosen by the dpe to provide almost identical instruction.
as far as the faa is concerned, since the dpe didn’t also give them an endorsement, it’s perfectly above board.
Manha77anProject@reddit
Technically above board, sure, but the DPE owns the damn school!
acidreducer@reddit
He owns the planes, the flight school, the fbo, the mx hangar AND is the in house dpe. Need I say more.
More-ponies@reddit
Or maybe he has integrity and would only pass people if they deserve to be passed? Novel idea I know but there are people like that.
acidreducer@reddit
I mean Morris is a fair guy, but at the end of the day he’s running a business
Mundane-Reality-7770@reddit
Where's the conflict of interest? If DPE fails the student he gets to collect retest fees.
Manha77anProject@reddit
DPE/Owner is running a business that presumably has Yelp/Google reviews, and gets referrals through customers who have had positive experiences. There is a large incentive for that person to deliver a delightful experience to his/her customers.
Moreover, the DPE/Owner also is cutting paychecks to the person who signs customers off to get checked out by that same DPE/Owner.
Mundane-Reality-7770@reddit
This is like stage checks. Except it's official. People pass and fail those all the time. It's practically the same thing.
Manha77anProject@reddit
Stage checks are not FAA official checkrides.
ATrainDerailReturns@reddit
I mean 141 self testing end of course stage checks are by all practical criteria the same
Mundane-Reality-7770@reddit
Aware. Poorly worded on my end.
Motampd@reddit
I get what your saying - but at the same time......that kind of just says to me that their are multiple reasons that a conflict exists, not that they cancel each other out lol
It would allow unsavory individuals to take advantage on both ends - IF they feel they could squeeze a few more $ out of a certain student......maybe they fail a checkride.
On the other end - maybe a student passes a checkride a bit to easy if they are about to leave or start to develop a public negative opinion of the school.
I know that seems a bit far fetched - but I have learned that someone somewhere will take advantage if there is a way unfortunately
I would think it would just be more above board/easier if the two were not intimately related (although its a bigger pain for students, no doubt)
Mundane-Reality-7770@reddit
If you fail a checkride and are within standards you report to the FAA immediately. If it's a frequent occurrence the fsdo revokes their examiner authority and they lose a substantial amount of business.
Motampd@reddit
No argument from me there - at least on paper, that is absolutely true.
I just dont know how often that actual happens....? Like it seems to me there is plenty of leeway for a DPE to justify alot of things if they wanted to. (Although maybe less so nowadays that everyone is filming everything all the time.) There are plenty of examples of things they shouldnt do, but get away with
I would worry its kinda like saying " cops are technically supposed to follow the speed limit as well, or they can be ticketed just like me or you"..........on paper yes, in practice it almost never happens.
So, your not wrong! I just dont know that I trust the system to police itself - over just making sure there is no conflict to begin with
Mundane-Reality-7770@reddit
Their will always be a conflict until the FAA stops the privatization of exam authority.
My point is you can argue a conflict of interest to pass. And a conflict of interest to fail an applicant. In my eyes if both outcomes could be a conflict of interest then no conflict of interest exists.
Mobe-E-Duck@reddit
You might think so, but does the military send their recruits to another service’s dpes for a sign off? Do airlines?
scottwo@reddit
A school near me gets a week of a DPE’s time and only offers ME the previous week. So, you can’t just do it whenever, when you’re assured a checkride when they do offer it.
Perfect_Big_5907@reddit
Yeah back in the day we did not have to wait for DE's . Had plenty to choose from . Also had lots of schools with onsite DE's .
True-Ad-304@reddit
Probably in house examiners or scheduling the checkride before they even start training
Nathan_Wildthorn@reddit
👏 Congratulations! Welcome to the "Club!" 😄 👍
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
The cover to get into the club is outrageous!
Nathan_Wildthorn@reddit
Yeah, isn't it??? So much so, that I wouldn't rent a multi from my flying club unless I had at least two PAX (friends, flying and non-flying) who were willing to share the fuel and oil costs. 😄
facepuke01@reddit
I teach in an ol pa-23-23 a ton. I love them for training honestly, they are super forgiving.
OCFlier@reddit
I did my MEL ride in an Apache. Doing the CMEL in the same plane must be double tough. Well done 👍🏼
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
Maneuver wise, I don't know how different they'd be. Didn't require any of the maneuvers from CSEL other than the stalls and steep turns. Glad I never have to demonstrate lazy eights again...
OCFlier@reddit
I remember doing a single engine approach as part of my checkride. He failed the engine at about the FAF and I was busy trying to keep the needles centered and spinning the overhead trim handle while pumping down the gear. What fun 🤦♂️
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
Dang! He gave me my engine back before I had to get configured or capture glideslope, thankfully. That sounds like multiple handfuls.
Fluffy_Duck_Slippers@reddit
Sick paint job
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
There were 5 or 6 of them, all different colors. A lot cooler than most modern stuff.
acidreducer@reddit
Lmao I’d recognize that bird anywhere. Did you get grease all over your hands manually dropping the gear?
Also how much water was in that auto gas
mi_pilot@reddit
Hey there, it’s not that rare to have Hobbs off the master switch. And it’s easier to cheat than with oil pressure, by turning off the master in flight.
acidreducer@reddit
Haha that’s a real pro tip right there.
Well I guess just haven’t had run ins with many rigged that way.
I guess I was more hinting at business practices of the owner of the place.
mi_pilot@reddit
Right, that’s kinda how I interpreted your post, that the guy is making sure he gets his money’s worth. But by running the Hobbs off the battery he’s making it easier not harder to cheat, if anyone is inclined to do so.
acidreducer@reddit
Well the beauty of a light twin is you’ll always have an instructor on board haha
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
No grease from the ole manual hydraulic pump handle, and the fuel had a little bit of water, sump away until it's gone lol. The fuel sumps are in the worst location possible.
revwatch@reddit
So much water.
batebuddyOrl@reddit
Congrats
Jet7378@reddit
congrats to you!…..loved my time on the Apache….
Alarmed-Map7052@reddit
What school is that?
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
Riggin Flight Service in Madison, SD. He does everything except for CFI initial. There's a good place to do that in Minnesota I hear. That's my next stop
acidreducer@reddit
Highly recommend doing initial with the FSDO!
brodie34mills@reddit
You look thrilled
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
Just tired lol
brodie34mills@reddit
I bet! Big step, congratulations bud.
Malcolm2theRescue@reddit
I’m amazed they are still flying! Good job tho!
DollarBrand@reddit
Nice,
Since it was accelerated, I'm wondering how instrument current you were before you signed up. I plan on doing an accelerated course but I technically need an IPC to be current, wondering how you felt. Thanks!
MeadyOker@reddit
You don't need to be instrument current to do your CMEL. You'll do your appoeaches during training as required by the ACS and as long as you have an Instrument Airplane rating you'll have no restrictions.
If you don't have your instrument rating for whatever reason you'll get a day VFR restriction until you get your instrument ticket (preferably in a ME so you can remove the restriction at the same time).
DollarBrand@reddit
Thanks, I know you do an approach with engine out correct? Got my IR last year, and can load up an approach and fly one no issues. Just wondering if the MEL check ride ever gets more detailed than that and not waste my time getting an IPC!
MeadyOker@reddit
Nope. All you do is an approach during which at some point you'll get a simulated engine failure and you do the rest of the approach single engine.
You may do a turn in holding if the approach calls for it, but there is no discussions like you had for your IR check.
DPE just wants to see you handle the single engine emergency while also flying an approach.
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
Mine was basically flying the RNAV course reversal with an engine out, but he gives you power back once you reach the FAF and break off for pattern work
MeadyOker@reddit
Yep, mine was also an RNAV but all the way to the MAP and then he gave the engine back, low approach into the pattern
DollarBrand@reddit
Gotcha. Thanks so much for the reply and congrats!
MeadyOker@reddit
Not OP, but thanks. Got my CMEL last month and building pic now to get my MEI next month-ish hopefully
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
I went in needing an IPC as well, but multi and single instrument currency are separate, so it wouldn't make a difference either way.
DollarBrand@reddit
That's good to know. I would personally feel good shooting an approach so this was very helpful. Thanks for the reply and congrats!!
mi_pilot@reddit
Dude, you’re supposed to be smiling! Congrats!
Any_Purchase_3880@reddit
Good ol Riggin! Got my CFII there. Quick and straightforward. Nice job
rens24@reddit
Morris is still crankin' them out!
q-milk@reddit
What is the name of the outfit?
Perfect_Big_5907@reddit
those are a sweet ride . Congrats.
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
I'm told they're very forgiving to new multi students, not much to write home about in the performance department.
Only_Mind_4122@reddit
Random question - what boots are those? Nice job!
Puzzleheaded-Leg5064@reddit (OP)
Oliberte boots. Found them at a thrift store in town for $10 lol
rickmaz@reddit
Congrats!
