If you’re looking at heating, train for heat pumps. Gas boilers will likely be a thing of the past within ten or fifteen years, and the last thing you want to do is have to take time off to retrain when you’re 30 years old with kids to feed.

The future of energy is electric and renewable, so for that reason I would choose electrician rather than gas engineer. It's not that there won't be any gas engineer work out there, it's just that there will be loads more electrical work, and an ever increasing amount, whereas gas engineer work will eventually reduce. You will have less competition for more work and an electrician than you will as a gas engineer in the future.

I wish I'd done a trade instead of office jobs. I'm at risk of being replaced with AI any time soon. Electricity isn't going anywhere. Set yourself up for life and earn a good living from it too.
