Because no one else in their right mind would drive their trucks for as little pay as they’re offering. Brrrr truck driver shortage need more visa workers brrrrr
That's actually not true. The Amazon freight partners or AFPs are the guys driving the Amazon branded trucks but with their own carriers DOT number are pretty heavily natural born citizens. Amazon meddles in every step of the process. They hire newbies and older drivers close to retirement that need good benefits and set schedules. They are always taking new drivers on, its their meat grinder business model.
Now the guys picking up from their load board, thsts a different story. They're actually being harder on the AFPs to pick up the slack their shit rates are making because Amazon does not want to budge until presumably around Prime day.
Well I definitely dont work for Amazon and definitely didnt look up the trailer in our system and I most certainly definitely didn't learn the drivers information and certainly did not find that they are an The Forward Group Inc. FDIG and they were not most definitely not in an Amazon branded tractor. Oh and I most certainly do not know that this drivers name does not sound like anyone from any Eastern country. And I definitely no I certainly didn't find out there was supposedly as reported by the driver no issue with the day cab or trailer and they definitely did only have 1 hour left on their clock. Nope no way not me nah uh.
I see guys at the truck stop do all kind of stupid shit when backing. It's like they think doing it the hard way on purpose will make other people think they're cool or something.
Bro I thought I was the only one. MF will see 5 empty spots right together and then go park between two other trucks. Risk management. I don't care if I hit Wonder Woman's invisible vehicle. I didn't see it. 😂
I'm the guy that'll park between two trucks when there are plenty of other open spots, my reasoning is that I know that my left and right are already parked and I don't have to worry about somebody parking next to me later in the evening. But I certainly don't make it more difficult than it needs to be, and I'm definitely not blindsiding
I've had to Blind Side so many times over the years, that there's very little difference anymore. I just stand up a couple times and look out the passenger window to make sure I'm tracking, and it's there.
Then I see the guys trying to Blind Side for no reason, getting out the truck and going to look about eight times before I get out to guide them, and I wonder the same thing. Why the hell didn't you just spin around at the end and do it the easy way? I didn't do that because it's a tight flip down there and I'm not trying to abuse the tires that I paid for on my trailer, but these guys don't buy tires. It's a company trailer. Do it the easy way.
I thought you would get in trouble for sliding them at the places that make you slide them back before you can enter the yard. Nothing happened the first time I did it and I'll slide them as needed, now.
I think they want your tandems slid back so they know the handle isn’t seized and they know the tandems are good to slide. As long as you leave it with the all the way back, I’ve never seen them care.
I pissed off a terminal for blindsiding even though there were plenty of easier spots. My first time solo blindside back was with that set-up. I didn't hit anything but it took forever and I looked every bit as inexperienced as I was. I wanted more practice and took it. Our yard dog came around after I parked and told me to use the easier spot next time. I understand the sentiment. I also understand thr frustration of being blocked while trying to park at a company yard, I would just think it's kind of expected at a mega where the only blindside backing you're likely to do is once with a trainer or in school. Having real world reps is always nice. You can't develop a skill if you never train.
I honestly just haven't had a whole lot of reasons to even try lol but if I ever have any doubts I just take the extra 10 seconds and get out of the fucking truck and look lol
I would do this when in super rare cases I had a super long wheelbase truck. The trailer would swing too much when pivoting into tight areas so I’d have to set them back to be more accurate.
In 99% of trucks I’ve driven this is not the case and I’d much rather have the tandems forward.
If i have the space, I normally back with tandem to the rear because I don't have to worry about tail swing that way. Granted, that's at the loading docks and this is a parking spot
I’ll never forget my trainer’s advice. “Don’t ever blindside back and even when you have to do it…don’t” I’m 3 years into trucking and I have no shame walking to a yard dog and telling him I can’t get into that door and if he wants me to drop my trailer so he can do it I’m protecting my license at all costs
Blind side backing is definitely a skill you should learn. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with admitting you're out of depth and need a yard dog. When I first started driving I would park in large empty lots and practice blind side backing and alley dock in my down time. It has helped me tremendously in my career.
Yeah, it's not fun but sometimes necessary, and requires a bit of GOAL.
One of the places I used to work in had lots of foreign trucks in, and it was really tight. Took them hours sometimes, but better that than fucking something up.
For real, I hate when I see guys do stupid shit just to prove a point or show their skill. I'm the kind of driver who will always take the easier route or take the easy spot.
I saw a Walmart driver in a ditch at a pet food supplier. It was early evening. The curve requires you to take it at about 25 mph. It was dry so I'm not sure how they ended up in the ditch. The drive axles were splayed out like a cat laying down. It didn't look like they ever made an attempt to turn.
I find that hard to believe, not the ditch part, but are you sure it was a walmart tractor? Sounds more likely to be a 3rd party hauling a walmart trailer.
I'm absolutely certain it was a Walmart truck. It was a Purina plant in Edmond, OK. The driver was sitting in the driver's seat with their interior lights on. White truck with Walmart on the side.
I had this very discussion with a student who wanted to blindsided in a very similar situation. They were too convince that they could blind side easier than a sight side in this situation. This was after struggling with putting the sight side in place mind you. Blew my mind their position.
You ever see last mile drivers in the city pull into spots they should only ever be backing into? Same mindset. They can't understand why it's easier to drive out than back out.
I watched a guy around my age struggle at a company yard. It was later in the day so I can imagine fatigue was setting in. The set-up was pretty straightforward and would've allowed for a straight back. They got the set-up wrong. A driver probably in their 40s got out to offer advice. The younger driver proceeded to clearly ignore whatever advice they were giving. The kept fucking up for a good long while. The frustration was building. Finally, they stopped the needlessly aggressive maneuvering and let the guy hop into the truck. Together they finally got him set-up so he could back into the spot without issue. As someone who has been described as hard headed and even more so hesitant to accept help, if a coworker offers help, I'll accept it.
It was around September 2015 when a yard dog at a Victoria's secret DC did this exact thing. For whatever reason, the driver decided to move the tandems All the way back knowing the minimal amount of maneuverability he had and took out a brand new Peterbilt Pride and Class. The driver was waiting inside of the office to get paperwork. Came out to the biggest heartbreak of his life. It was not a good scene. The yard dog try to get off by saying someone else hit him and ran off property. The DC manager came out and for whatever reason walked the yard dog driver into the office. That guy never came back out. The DC manager did and continued moving trailers. That dude got fired on the spot. You know those PB Pride and class trucks were nice when they came out.
reminds me on this time back in the 90's. i was training an "experienced" driver how to drop decks and had a simple load of perlite in 50 CF bags (Cubic feet). i was like, uh swing wide there buddy this is a hard driveway to get into and he looked at me said i got this and proceeded to make the turn like a car. He flattened 2 cars, one an accord and the other i think was a camery. i just sat there and watched him do it. it happened so fast i was just going, well i guess he aint getting the job lol.
Even then if it was me I would have backed it in. I don’t like them forward because maybe I can turn faster but on that same exact situation the tail of the trailer is insane the other trailer rather than slamming into its side. I’ll slide them forward in special circumstances but otherwise I’m also sliding them back, assuming that it’s possible.
Maybe that Amazon driver that needed my help to turn around with miles on each side. Like help as in he needed me to back up for him, not like I gave him instructions.
Last week I watched a guy pull into a shipper, get out and ask me if he was at the right place. I was standing right next to the giant light up sign displaying the company name he had just asked for, when I pointed to the sign he looked me dead in the eyes and said “what that says” I told him he was in the right place and that he needed to back into one of the spots across from the office or they wouldn’t check him in. He then proceeded to jackknife himself and crush the fairing on side of his truck, and also managed to drive the corner of his trailer into the sidewall of the trailer next to him. He then got out, looked at everything, got back in his truck and just fucking left. At this point there is literally nothing that surprises me anymore. I have two days left before I turn in my truck and move on to the next chapter and I can’t fucking wait.
