What’s the one single dish/snack you would recommend to your foreign friend?

My friend is staying in London overnight for flight transfer, I wonder what’s the best food option to present to him. Like fish and chips, shepherds pie, bangers and mash, roast dinner or something?

Fish & chips with mushy peas and curry sauce. Or if for breakfast a fry up with black pudding, or if that's too big just a roll with black pudding, potato scone and brown sauce 🤤
vetaly87@reddit
Black pudding as the first introduction to British food is brave. That’s either how you make a lifelong fan or end the friendship before the flight home
justanothergin@reddit
Has to be Stornoway black pudding though.

I have never before met a fellow roll and black pudding with potato scone and brown sauce fan! There's two of us!

Chips with curry sauce. I did NOT realise how nom these were, but it ticks all the comfort food boxes
kelvifoxx@reddit
And cheese on top, curry sauce first, then cheese.
Morazma@reddit
This is really not a dish that needs cheese on top 😂
shanloulie@reddit
brother necessity is not the goal here
kelvifoxx@reddit
Everything (savoury) is better with cheese on top!! 😂

Depends where they are from. I would say full english (i know US bakes beans are odd, so that could work), fish and chips/pub lunch with a pint for a heavy lunch. Or get smashed and get a doner.

Get him absolutely hammered, and take him to the lowest rated pizza shop you can find at 4am.

If they’re only in London overnight, I’d go fish and chips from somewhere decent rather than a random pub roast. It’s simple, very British, and harder to explain than it looks — crispy batter, proper chips, mushy peas, vinegar, the full experience.

I'd say take them to a really good pub that does food, they're usually the best place to get authentic British food, especially in London, plus the pub is obviously a very "British" experience! Most "British restaurants" in London are rubbish aimed at tourists, apart from the high-end places serving "modern British" cuisine, so a pub is the safest bet.
Although if it's somewhere you haven't eaten in yourself make sure you check the menu beforehand to make sure it's actually serving classic British food, some pubs try to get "creative", and some serve other cuisines like Indian or Thai.

All feel very nostalgic and comforting to me!

Also take him to M&S for some flight snacks. Introduce him to Percy Pig

A proper pub fish and chips. Forget the roast, that's a Sunday only, multi hour affair. A good fish and chips is the perfect one night only snapshot of British comfort food. Crispy batter, flaky fish, chunky chips.

Beans on toast. With a tonne of cheddar cheese
Nolsoth@reddit
I've had some pretty decent grub in pubs around London.
Something I really enjoyed tho was a traditional pie and mash dish, as a Kiwi my love of pies is genetically baked in so it was a nice little treat.
Don't forget to give them some picked onion monster munch's and space raiders crisps and a cold irn brew to wash it down with or some dandelion and burdock.
