As inspired by a recent post, perhaps somewhere that has something about it or you enjoy visiting? I love Wells next the sea.

Does Edinburgh count?

Why wouldn’t it?

I'd say Leeds where I am and Bristol where my sister is.

I mean, we’re sort of spoiled? London, Manchester, Liverpool, Brighton, Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol, Bath, Edinburgh and Cardiff are all major cities which I think are great, it’s just going to be personal preference for the rest. I’ve probably left a bunch off here too…

Nottingham has one of the best nightlifes in Britain.

If i can't pick London then it a tie between Glasgow and Manchester.

Agreed Glasgow and Manchester. I don't go to either regularly, but always have a good time when I do. Good places to eat and drink, wide range of shops, cultural activities, good transport links to the countryside.

I mean it's London but that's a bit obvious. So much to see and do though. I think any wealthy person could have the best life living in London. Brighton isn't for everyone but has lots of interesting things going on.

> I think any wealthy person could have the best life living in London. Genuine curiosity, what do you consider "wealthy" for this?

With the caveat that we moved out of London three years ago, my wife and I were on a combined income of £90k and could do all the things we wanted to do. One bedroom flat to ourselves, did weekends away, ate at nice restaurants and went to the theatre a lot. Downside was lack of space at home to engage in other hobbies and no space for a child. I'm definitely happier and have a lot more disposable income now we're not in London, but I do miss the cultural activities London offers and that we were able to engage with.

I’ll chime in you need to be on £120,000 with a partner that also works at least £40,000 to get the most out of living in London in my opinion.

geeered@reddit

You can still get a whole lot out of London on a low wage - there's a massive amount of free things to do. If you are able bodied, most things can be easily got to by walking or cycling. Also plenty of options for things like seat filler tickets for big name shows that let you get to pretty expensive productions for good prices, for many gigs you can get great deals on ticketswap etc if you don't mind leaving it late. Okay, it's definitely nicer to 'get the most out of it' if you have a combined income of £160k, especially for having decent accommodation. But you can still get a whole lot out of it with less money, especially if you're more flexible on accommodation options.

Oh yeh definitely. You can get loads out of London on a lower wage. But to truly get the best out of London comfortably including restaurants, night life etc you’d probably need to be a millionaire.

Whilst I love living in Leeds and think the city centre is decent, I don't think it can compete with Manchester or Liverpool personally in terms of scale, variety, character and things to do.

It certainly used to about 20 years ago. People were travelling all the way up from London to go to Rock City but, I moved away 18 years ago and people on Reddit seem to think its a bit shit now.

What things would you class as exciting? It’s exactly the same as Leicester and Birmingham. My little brother went uni there so I’m not just being anti midlands. I’d even say Leicester is a better night out these days
View on Reddit #85728585

Jabberwhorl@reddit

I live in Leicester and although I don't go out as much these days Nottingham has much more going on in the music scene, including some great festivals etc. Leicester doesn't have a live music scene that compares with Notts or Birmingham and even Coventry gets better gigs now.
View on Reddit #85729420

Minute-Employ-4964@reddit

I used to go to a few gigs in Nottingham at rock city etc. Maybe I just had a bad night out last time I was there? Leicester has a strong rave scene last time I was out. I still stand by Nottingham not having anything massively more exciting to make this list? Definitely not even close to a night out in Manchester or Liverpool for example
View on Reddit #85729486

Jabberwhorl@reddit

I've lived in Brighton and London and visited most of the cities on this list, including Manchester a lot. It's true that the Midlands doesn't have a focal point in terms of exciting events that quite compare, sadly. Birmingham is probably the only one with that 'bustle'.

Gravesend used to be a tourist attraction for Londoners years ago. Locals referred to them as DFL's (Down From Londons). Pocahontas died in Gravesend and is buried at St George's Church.

Bristol, outside of London. There's just a lot of get up and go here and optimism. An entrapaneural spirit but not just for being a flash bastard. For arts and tech and activism as much as business.

Outside of london. Glasgow and Edinburgh are both very exciting. Edinburgh has the fringe and it's intimate venues. Glasgow has the big event spaces.
