Late 2000s Windows XP gaming PC build

Built this PC mainly for looks as i have other retro PCs for actual use. Many parts used are brand new and everything is era appropriate (except the psu, already replaced for a modern one, the one seen on pictures died). Might put it to use once i get a CRT. E8500 oc to 4ghz, HD 4870 toxic, 2gb DDR2 800mhz cl4, sound blaster x-fi xtreme music

Nice case, great lighting. I hammered a 10 inch lighted fan into side of my generic tower for extra cooling of the PNY GTX 1650 card since it is running 3 screens for MS FSX, 2004, 2002, 2000, and some other FSs. Crude, I know, but needed the air flow.

Impressively built. However I would classify it more as a Vista build. Anything above a Nvidia 7000/Ati x1000 series and a high end P4 is a little overdone on XP.

most gamers were using xp even on pcs this new. most skipped vista for w7
Trick-Research-7352@reddit
I know most people skipped but there are a few DX10 titles which kicked on Vista as the original AC

true, i have a vista gaming pc for those
DeadSkullz627@reddit
That’s a nice machine for XP
DeepDayze@reddit
Oh yes maybe up the RAM to 4GB and even the darn good games of the era would fly on this beast.

32-bit XP -> 3 GB RAM.
DeepDayze@reddit
Right 3GB for data and program storage and the rest for the OS.

That chipset heatsink is insane. I LOVE IT!
BeatTheMarket30@reddit
For Windows XP you don't really need a CRT. It's useful mainly for DOS/Windows 98.
e34waifu@reddit (OP)
i know but it looks cooler. i don't have any use for this pc as of now
DeepDayze@reddit
But it looks fun and the specs are darn good for an XP era machine. Why not throw Win 7 on it even?
e34waifu@reddit (OP)
w7 is boring at this point, honestly. it doesn't feel 'retro' for me because i was still using it in like 2022 or 2023
66659hi@reddit
You need a Core 2 Quad and more RAM
e34waifu@reddit (OP)
pointless for xp. it's not supposed to be a high end pc either
Imobia@reddit
That’s a LOT of copper.
kalnaren@reddit
Is that an old Sunbeam case? Looks very close to the Sunbeam Transformer case I had in that era
e34waifu@reddit (OP)
nope, acutake
