I was just rewatching City Slickers (one of my childhood TV favorites), and at the beginning of the film, they mention that Mitch (Billy Crystal) turned just 39 years old at the beginning of the film.

Shit made me feel real old.

As a rule my stepfather hates every movie I’ve ever liked and vice verse. We can agree on Dave, Field of Dreams, and The Birdcage. One day I put this on and he came over to bitch about it. 90 minutes later he thanked me and went to start a project.
Independent_Step9574@reddit
I still believe this is one of the best movies ever made, with one of the most unnecessary sequels in history
siiilenttbob@reddit
But it gives us a nice alternative when "Electric Boogaloo" is feeling kinda overused.
Schindler's List 2: The Legend of Curly's Gold
isodore68@reddit
The Deadly Art Of Illusion is also a good alternative.

“Curly was my brother.” Oh, you didn’t know he had an identical twin? Top-tier writing right there.
Tonio775@reddit
it was still a novel concept to my 11 year-old brain, so I ate that sequel right up...
WhyteBeard@reddit
Somehow…Curly returned!
PackageNorth8984@reddit (OP)
It was his estranged identical twin brother. Duh!

I saw the sequel first as a kid, so it has a special place in my heart. Same with Weekend at Bernie’s 2. Both terrible but love them both
Independent_Step9574@reddit
Weekend at Bernie’s 2 is one of the funniest movies ever. I think it is superior to the original.
chadwickipedia@reddit
Ain’t this a bitch
EvenLettuce6638@reddit
But the sequel was funnier.
Possible-Tangelo9344@reddit
Unnecessary, but I liked it
Reasonable-Wave8093@reddit
I liked it?
PackageNorth8984@reddit (OP)
I liked it too. Haha.
Funkopedia@reddit
Although it was unneeded, I absolutely love how it ended for them.
jinsaku@reddit
“Same day.” Is the line that hits the hardest in that movie. That whole scene is incredible.
Bruno Kirby died too young.

I still use this all the time and it kills hahaha

And Billy Crystal was only 43 when he did that movie
NoLimitHonky@reddit
An all-time classic. That intro when he goes to "Parent's Day" at his son's school and goes through a typical life cycle never stops being funny lol... "A Jamaican nurse who your wife hates, but you call 'Mama'."
Daniel Stern's meltdown with his wife and his side chick from the store is one of the best filmed breakdowns.
This movie truly has no flaws. I wish Crystal would make a comeback.

I watched this when I turned 39. His speech about aging is spot on:
EvenLettuce6638@reddit
Naw, by the time I was 40 I'd participated in wars in 2 continents and flown helicopters on three.
Wapiti_whacker82@reddit
478 months, according to his mom.

We couldn't afford to have a midlife crisis. (Also that was the year of lockdown)
No_Ratio1493@reddit
I turned 40 in 2020 and was kind of relieved I didn’t have to have some big blowout plan for it. (Whatever it could have bren likely be underwhelming and a pain in the ass anyway.)
big_ringer@reddit
I turned 40 during the pandemic. It was also the year of my 10-year wedding anniversary.

So did I!

I turned 39 a few weeks into lockdown. If I had known 38 would be the last time I had an actual birthday, I would have made it a bigger deal.

My favorite scene is them talking baseball, and the lady throws out that she doesn’t know who played 3rd base for Pittsburgh in 1960, to which they all rush to yell, “Don Hoak!”
That’s the equivalent of asking who played 3rd base for the 2005 White Sox, to which most of my baseball friends could yell “Joe Crede!”
Some things in life are timeless .
Nadathug@reddit
I was only 9 when this came out, and I liked the movie, but I noticed Billy Crystal did that dumb monologue from the movie (“Your 20s are a blur, you spend your 30s saying ‘what happened to my 20s?’ blah blah blah”) in his standup at the time too. He also did it in every talk show he went on to promote the movie. Even at 9, I was like “Jesus Christ guy, we GET IT.”
dunnkw@reddit
Yeah I burned right past 39 without even giving this another thought and now I’m 44 and haven’t even made plans to go on a cattle drive yet.
PackageNorth8984@reddit (OP)
Step to it, buckaroo.
ryhoyarbie@reddit
I think in real life Crystal was about 43, not like it really matters I guess.
Mike9797@reddit
Still, I’m 44 and I don’t think I look that old lol I mean I probably do but when I look at Billy in that movie he seems older for some reason.
Funkopedia@reddit
Our self image is a memory of a mixture of every time we looked in the mirror over the course of 40 years.
Powerful_Leg8519@reddit
Thank you! People who don’t know me see a middle aged lady. We look better the previous generations but we still look middle aged.
I think he looks like a 39 year old in this pic. We’re judging the high forehead lol.

I mean yeah but thanks 😭
MungoJennie@reddit
That’s so incredibly depressing.
CorgiMonsoon@reddit
Yep, he was born in 1948, so 42 or 43 during filming, 43 by the time it was released

I was watching Jackie Brown the other night and they mention she is 44.

I was going to this guys boat to do some work and when he greeted me he was wearing a full cowboy outfit. The hat, the boots, he was 60 and looked like he could kick my ass at 22. He had a yacht but he told me he owns land in Montana. Long story short, he invited me to go up there to move bison from one end of the property to the other. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life and this movie was my motivation. I was bummed I didn’t get to bring a baby cow home.
LoquaciousApotheosis@reddit
Did you get some kind of rash from making in the bushes?

My buddies and I did a multi day canoe trip a few years ago. First time the five of us had all been able to see each other together in 20 years.
Of course the “Deliverance” jokes were made, especially since it was in the south.
Then I looked it up and realized Burt Reynolds and all of them were in their mid THIRTIES in that film.
We were too old.
EvenLettuce6638@reddit
Yeah, he was a whiny bitch at the start of the movie.

I had seen the sequel but the original seemed boring as a kid so I never watched until this last year. I'm glad I waited. It made more of an impact now that I'm old enough to vibe with it.

I'm glad my family wasn't the only ones who loved this movie as kids. I remember a couple years ago my brother bringing it up and asked if anyone had the dvd to borrow, and I said "of course, I do, but it's a blu ray." 😆 I'm not buying no low def version of my a favorite movie.
